I believe censorship is harmful in the school system because it will get students ready for the real world . the first reason for believing censorship is harmful because live in the realistic world because you also learn valuable lessons. Another reason is people have the right to voice their opinion and express what they want to say. The last reason reason is that it is people banned books from schools and libraries.
One reason that censorship is harmful is because students can learn from some of the things with bad language and similar things. Most people who do agree with censorship the parentes. Like in the article “Censorship In the schools” it says “studies have shown that in a school setting it is most often the parent who demands
censorship” (American Library Association). In some cases though it is acceptable because great lessons can come from a book, movie, or play. This is a problem that parentes believe censorship. Not only does censorship harm schools but it does does not get young adults ready for the future. The second reason for believing censorship is harmful is because people have freedom of speech. People have the right to say what they want to say. One of the arguments for example a librarian banned a book from the library, but does believe in free speech and democracy. The librarian said “i am a second librarian and academic library director and support
Americans hate the word censorship. It puts fire into the eyes of any self proclaimed, speaker of the people. but is censorship that bad, or that wrong? Censorship is an enormous part of the stability of society. One of the many types of censorship takes place on the airwaves. Comedians, George Carlin, Howard Stern, and Mncow Muller had an enormous effect on the ideals of censorship in this era, trying to prove that the FCC had no right to censor radio airwaves. They questioned why words we all hear at home cannot be spoken on the radio if listeners are given a proper warning. However, there is no need for young children to be exposed to such lude material and the American people must be more reasonable about morals and stop worrying about our “First Amendment” rights.
According to “Freedom of Speech” by Gerald Leinwand, Abraham Lincoln once asked, “Must a government, of necessity, be too strong for the liberties of its people, or too weak to maintain its own existence (7)?” This question is particularly appropriate when considering what is perhaps the most sacred of all our Constitutionally guaranteed rights, freedom of expression. Lincoln knew well the potential dangers of expression, having steered the Union through the bitterly divisive Civil War, but he held the Constitution dear enough to protect its promises whenever possible (8).
Censorship has been a big part of the world’s history and especially America’s history. One of the most quoted amendments to the United States constitution is the first amendment; “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press ...” This amendment guaranteeing free speech, press, and religion is still heavily debated and contested today. Censorship, as a challenge to free speech and press has been allowed many times and has been heavily debated itself. Many people censor for many different reasons and in many different forms. Censorship itself is not always a bad thing and has in some cases been used for protection of the general population.
In the article “Censorship in the Schools” it states that “Censorship is harmful because it results in the opposite of a true education and learning.” Therefore, kids are being exposed to everything such as mature subjects to killing and violent actions. As a result of censorship, many believe that it doesn't let people know the truth about everything. Even though this is true it still does not protect children from mature content and violent actions.
Censorship in School Libraries The most debatable and controversial form of censorship today is the banning of books in school libraries. Banning books that educate students is wrong and selfish. Censorship of books in school libraries is neither uncommon nor an issue of the past. Books with artistic and cultural worth are still challenged constantly by those who want to control what others read. The roots of bigotry and illiteracy that fuel efforts to censor books and free expression are unacceptable and unconditional.
Schools should not be able to censor books because of its suppressing ideas or writing. Students deserve to learn about everything that has happened in history. Therefore, books should not be censored because of truthful things that have happened in the past. Censoring books is also taking away students way of viewing things. For example, if students learn that everything is good in the world and nothing bad ever happened they would go into the real world thinking that everything is fine.
Walt Whitman once said, “The dirtiest book of all is the expurgated book.” Between the years 2000 and 2009 a total of 3200 books were challenged in school libraries in an attempt to expurgate, or censor, the content in books provided to students. Today the trend of censorship continues as popular novels such as The Hunger Games, The Fault in Our Stars, and Captain Underpants are censored from schools across the nation (Challenges by Reason).Censorship in regards to literature refers to the examination and suppressing of a book because of objectionable material. The process of censorship in school libraries often begins with an outspoken parent, teacher, student, or administrator and ends in the banning or abridgement of a novel deemed inadmissible. Censorship is protecting many students from controversial, immoral, and potentially unsuitable content; however, this is not always the case. Students, parents, teachers, and administrators with different backgrounds, beliefs, and morals are not creating a library pleasing to everyone because of the variety of opinion. Censorship in school is not justifiable, because it restricts discussion and knowledge of new, controversial, and necessary ideas, allows a handful of people to make decisions for a larger group based on opinion, and undermines democratic ideals.
Censorship in Schools There has recently been a renewed interest and passion in the issue of censorship. In the realm of the censorship of books in schools alone, several hundred cases have surfaced each year for nearly the past decade. Controversies over which books to include in the high school English curriculum present a clash of values between teachers, school systems, and parents over what is appropriate for and meaningful to students. It is important to strike a balance between English that is meaningful to students by relating to their lives and representing diversity and satisfying worries about the appropriateness of what is read.
Censorship is considered bad for our society in many peoples eyes because it is blocking us from knowing the truth about lots of things. But is blocking us from things always a good result? I believe that censorship does both good and bad for our society. When we get blocked from knowing things because our government doesnt want us to know about certain things, we eventually will know about it becuase of technology now of days. People will hack into certain websites to get things that are supposed to be censored from us, and if one person finds out something then a lot of people will know because things spread around very fast.
Censorship is an evil necessity. As much as it is disliked, it can provide much needed protection in society. It saves society from knowing information that could potentially be harmful or disruptive to our well-being. People pretend to want to know everything they want to be included in. Nevertheless, people need safety and reliability.
In the United States, students have slightly different rights in school than outside of school. While outside of school, students are considered and viewed as normal members of society. However, when in school, different things are expected of students. That is why students have slightly different rights in school than outside. The supreme court has taken many cases related to students that cover all areas of their rights. This paper will cover three main areas of student rights: censorship, privacy, and speech.
Hence censorship is essential in order to maintain peace and stability in the society. It will decrease the crime rates. Children can be exposed to sexual matters in school in a different manner as education. Excessive amount of sexual explicit material would surely be harmful. Censorship does not have a downside and it will be a better society.
The United States was built on the foundation of freedom. This freedom included the right to express one’s views without prosecution or limitation. This paved the way for the freedom to learn and pursue educational achievements. However, there are times when learning becomes halted in the interest of “appropriateness.” This is in reference to censorship. Censorship, by definition, is “the forbidding, blocking, limiting, or obstructing access to information for whatever reason.”(p248)1 This form of interference can prevent awareness and stint intellectual growth. Therefore, censorship should be used sparingly in education without political or religious motivation because the abuse of censorship negatively affects our education as a whole.
Censorship affects our society in many different ways, it affects the music we listen to, the movies we watch, the books we read, and many other aspects of our everyday lives. Even though many might argue that censorship doesn't really have a place in a society that emphases freedom of speech and the freedom to express oneself, but censorship is an essential and needed part of our growing society, it's needed in the television industry, the Internet, and the music industry. Censorship helps to make our world a better place because it creates a better environment for us to live in.
Censorship is the suppression of words, images, ideas that are offensive to various individuals. Many people are against censorship;however,it has a purpose and place in society.Words have a more impact on society than actions do.Throughout history words have controlled societies started wars and lead the death of millions. Therefore, words need to be looked at as a tool. Many individuals believe there can be negative effects of censorship, subsequently the positive effects of security of the nation, control of violence, and control of false information demand freedom of speech be limited.
