Technology is usually viewed as an amazing thing that benefits everyone. The truth is that while technology may give us more easy access to information and communications it has negatively impacted our society. The cell phone is a technology that has become increasingly popular and more advanced in recent years. With the increase in their popularity, cell phones have not only negatively affected people’s health, but also their everyday social skills. The impact of cell phones can be most acutely felt during a person’s late teens to their early adult life. They can negatively affect ones emotions. Stress levels can increase from the constant ringing, vibrating alerts, and reminders cell phones have. A user can be put on edge if they are waiting for an important call or even if they have a need to receive a message. Have you ever felt the need to answer your phone at any time, even when preoccupied with something else. This isn’t an uncommon problem amount cell phone users. Many young people report feeling disconnected when they are cut off from their cell phones, even for relatively brief periods. When people feel the are disconnected from there phones their stress and anxiety levels can increase because of their fear they might be missing out on something. This dependence on cell phones often leads to a "double-bind" with users feeling stressed over needing to be available at all times as well as feeling disoriented when that contact is no longer available. This "cell phone lifestyle" can create a psychosocial trap for young people and adolescents that affects health and well-being. Other researchers have found that excessive use of phones can be linked to physiological arousal such as increased heart-rate, respiration, and muscle tension. Children, teenagers, and young adults have become so used to communicating through cellphone that they have a hard time trying to have in-person, real-life conversations. Have you ever been in a situation where you’re surround by strangers and your first instinct is to look down at your phone in hope to avoid having to talk to new people. This instinct we have to look down at our phone in uncomfortable situations is because we want to avoid have feelings of anxiety, distress, and awkwardness. Sometimes the only way for someone to escape those feeling is seeking comfort in their phone. With our culture being more technologically advanced children are getting cell phones earlier in life. Parents are beginning to give children their own cell phones as early as the age of five. When cell phones are being given to children so early they are preventing social skills from being taught because children are too caught up in technology. Face-to-face interactions are becoming more limited, it causes them to be anti-social and lose patience quickly. Cell phones allow us to have immediate access to information and it has been shown when we have to wait for something we start to get anxious. Children lose patience quickly but by exposing them to technology at early ages we will be decreasing their chances to
