The church I grew up in was at Christ Church at Whitewater which was a non- denominational Christian Church. Which we believed in the Father, Son, And Holy Spirit and also that Jesus Christ is the son of God and died on the cross for our sins and that we are all saved. After looking at the local churches in Knoxville I decided to visit one of the Catholic churches. I choose a Catholic church because I have always been interested in what Catholicism is like. Back home I have a friend who is Catholic and I used to think Catholic and Christians were the same but they each have their differences.
The name of the church I decided to observe was All Saints Catholic Church in Knoxville. Looking at it from the outside it looks like a typical church

We will do this as a joyful, welcoming Eucharistic community so that we might give witness to His resurrection”. Their mission statement really reflects their values. They really value trying to personally know Jesus and be like his disciples in order to love others and put others values above their own. This is a really good mission statement that could implement in many Christian churches and into our lives as Christians and not just Catholics. While looking at their mission statement, I feel like this church would fit under the Contemplative tradition as described in the Spiritual Formation Workbook. This tradition really focuses on prayer and meditation. I can see this because they really focus on prayer in church and encourage us to reflect on our lives. Another tradition that fits well is the Holiness tradition. This one really focuses on a virtuous life and to stay holy. I can see this because I learned they have to go through confession. The confession they do is with their priest and they will have to confess their sins to the
The Church has a few different points of view on
I will be describing and exploring my first visit to a Catholic Church. I attended Sunday mass with an ambassador in our class, CCC, on April 13, 2014 at noon. The service was actually called Palm Sunday because it is the Sunday before Easter. The service lasted about an hour and a half and took place in the interfaith portable on campus at UCI. I have grown up in a house that is not religious and have not attended a church before. My family’s race is Caucasian and I am independent when it comes to religion. I decided to attend a Catholic Church for my cultural plunge to get the experience and to see what it is like to attend church. I have always listened to my friends tell me they are going to church and that they are this religion. But I have never been able to experience what going to church is like.
I grew up going to Catholic Church and doing readings out of the Catholic Bible. As I grew older and started getting into middle and high school my attendance at church started to fade from going a few times a month into a few times a year. When I was sixteen I started to go with my girlfriend to a Baptist Church. Even though both churches were both preaching the same basic message, which was devote your life to following Christ and you will be saved from eternal damnation, they had two very different ways of being brought to salvation. The Catholic Church taught that you were saved by your good works on earth as well as your belief in Jesus Christ while the Baptist Church taught that you are saved by God’s grace alone and nothing you do on this Earth can change that. These two churches had different ideals about how to be saved, and it showed through their Bibles. The Catholic Bible has multiple books and two sections of books that are not in the bible I used at the Baptist Church, which was the English Standard Version (ESV). These books talk about being saved through good works and therefore they disagree with the Protestant theory of being saved through grace
Growing up in a traditional catholic family I attended catholic school and church just like everyone else in my family. Every Sunday and Tuesday growing up I spent time at church. Going to church taught all about religion and forgiveness. I learned from the bible that god knows we are all sinners and that if we ask for forgiveness he forgives us. I was told that to church is a safe place for someone to go if they need help and that everyone has their arms open to people in need. The catholic religion says that god loves all his children even when they sin.
The basilica has a long history that goes back to the year 1866, when the Spiritual Association of Devotee of Saint Joseph was established. The money that was raised by the foundation that was later used to make first constructions possible. Originally Boca Bella was the one who came up with the idea of building a church that was dedicated to the Holy Family. Franciscio De Paula del Vilar was the first architect to implement that idea, following the Neo - Gothic design. The construction started on the 19th of March 1882.
St. Francis of Assisi was born in Umbria, in 1811. Growing up, Francis enjoyed a very rich easy life because of his father’s wealth. Francis was loved by everyone. He was constantly happy, and a born leader. Whenever Francis was picky, people didn’t mind. If he was sick, people took care of him. Even from a young age, Francis was in love with French culture. He loved the songs of France, the romance of France, and especially the church. Francis had a different idea of life than his father.
The first Christian Church (the Orthodox Church) came to be in the Late Roman Empire because of Jesus of Nazareth, and the first Christian Emperor Constantine. The messages Jesus wanted to reach his disciples were this: brotherhood, equality, elevation of the poor, and anti-materialism. He preached a lifestyle that changed mankind, and gave people hope. Jesus gave the people of the Late Roman Empire some hope, and guided them through times of need. On the other hand you have the Catholic Church in Medieval Europe, with a lot of power in the medieval society. The Catholic Church was the western counterpart the Eastern Orthodox Church and it slowly became a very strict religion. Their mission was simple: faith+good works=salvation. Religion over 2000 years ago was almost more important then, than it is today. It was new, and it was important, the rise of Christianity played a central role in the early historical
The Catholic Inquisition officially began in the year 1231, when the pope appointed the first inquisitors of heresy. The last execution made in its name occurred in 1826 in Spain under the rule of Ferdinand and Isabella. The Catholic inquisition tried many people as heretics. It also tried thousands of women who were accused of being witches and charged with swearing allegiance to the devil and casting evil spells on their neighbors. The Spanish Inquisition was mainly focused on ensuring that Jews and Muslims that had converted to Catholicism truly believed in their new religion, but heretics and witches were also tried. Due to imprecise records, historians have had to estimate the amount of people who were actually executed in the Inquisition
Christianity has seven sacraments. They are Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Holy Orders, Anointing of the Sick, and Matrimony. Some important holidays are Easter and Christmas. Easter is Jesus’s resurrection from the dead. Christmas is the holiday where they celebrate the birth of Jesus.
Introduction This paper is on the ethnography of a Roman Catholic Church. It will explore the subculture of the Catholic Society in St Cuthbert's Church. “Catholics share with other Christians a belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ, the son of God made man who came to earth to redeem humanity's sins through His death and resurrection.” (Stanford, 2011).
Imagination, for Northrope Frye is the primary creative element in the mind that projects human desires and concerns upon the natural environment where human beings, like all other species, are born and thrive. This human environment is our home, the product of both our creative imagination we possess to construct a world to match our conception of it. In Northrope Frye’s essay an artist falls back on intuition and logic in their work. An artist feels what his world should resemble and what his intellectual resources try to achieve. A work of art not yet created will not be better or worse, from an already existing one, it will be only different.
Father Redmon explained in our interview that each person is to join his or her voice in united faith. My observation was of people outwardly participating e.g., kneeling, crossing themselves but vocal participation was minimal or left to the choir. During my interview with Father Redmon, I mentioned my observation regarding the various responses and he emphasized the centrality of the Eucharist, saying “Worship of the Holy Trinity through the Eucharist is the purpose of the church” and it is through this that they grow both individually and as the Church.
Within the Protestant religion, many denominations have arisen from its roots. These denominations have different views regarding belief on practices, baptism and who
The purpose of this paper is to discuss a service that I got to attend that was different from my own religious tradition. I decided to go with my chosen topic because to be honest I had never experienced or thought to experience a different type of church service other than the one I grew up in. I grew up in a Christian home and attended a non-denominational Christian church on a regular basis. I just never felt the need to experience something that was different. So I decided to attend a mass at a Catholic church. I had been to weddings in a Catholic church and even funerals with a Catholic involvement but not an actual mass.
Jesus served as example for all of humanity. His life work was to solve the fundamental problem of humanities sin and to provide eternal life with the Father. Jesus Christ demonstrated the way humans should live. He modeled behavior to the poor, the sick, the imprisoned, women, tax collector, to His friends. He came to set the example of the way to live for Christians. Basically, Jesus life was an outline of how to live your own life. Jesus confirmed that you should love your neighbor as yourself. That you should love your God with all your heart, with all your mind and with all your strength. This was demonstrated on a daily bases. Jesus verified that although humans are prone to sin, one can make a choice to not sin. When tempted by Satan, Jesus refrained from sin and turned to God the Father for strength to turn away from the temptation. Jesus was the teacher of complete, true knowledge.
