As the protagonist in the novel, Catherine is also the dynamic character because of the changes she undergoes too change her perspective and personality. Early in the book Catherine reveals herself as a stubborn character. This is inferred from the fact that her father attempts to force her into marriage with a suitor yet she refuses to do so. She continuously does whatever she can to get rid off the suitors that her father brings. For example, “I thought he spoke in some foreign tongue or cipher designed to conceal a secret message, but it seems only that his nose was plugged. bit and I determined to rid us of him this very day” (Cushman 7). This quote from the book displays her determination to get rid of the suitors because she does not want to be with just anybody. She is actually interested in her Uncle George for the reason he is described as elegant and handsome. Though, George and her friend Aelis are interested in each other, Catherine reveals her other character trait, rebellious. She attempts to sabotage them to ruin their love by trying to put a spell on them, “As Aelis and I passed George on the way in to supper, I threw a fistful of dirt at each of them, spattering us all… with this jealous evil in my heart” (Cushman 57). These character traits sum up how Catherine acts and behaves to get her depending on the situation, especially as a young woman at 14-years-old.
Mrs. Morehouse scolds Catherine when she draws her disabled son, Jason. It was unfair for Catherine when Mrs. Morehouse yells at her because Catherine knows what it feels like to have somebody in your family that’s disabled. Mrs. Morehouse is very sensitive to Jason. Mrs. Morehouse thinks Catherine feels that Jason has no feelings because he can’t talk. Catherine wasn’t doing anything wrong she just love to draw and she finds charm in something other people might not.
Catherine is like a bird stuck in it's cage. If you hold the bird in it's cage it will want to fly out of it even if you were to put food inside. Kate the Great Literary Analysis In Kate the Great by Meg Cabot, Jenny realizes that she cannot let anyone bring her down no matter what. When Kate comes around Jenny feels as if Kate is her master and she has to listen to whatever she is told to do. Jenny did not want to hurt Kate’s feeling by not letting her in, this is exactly what Kate told Jenny, “Don’t be such a baby,” (Cabot, 33).

She acts as the embodiment of pure wickedness, driven by low self-esteem, desperation, and a love of power. In Fenstad’s Mother, by Charles Baxter, character is a very essential element to the story. The main character, Harry Fenstad, is a complicated person, but it is his mother, Mrs. Clara Fenstad, who I feel is a more important and complex person. In this brief paper, I will explain why it is my opinion that both of these characters play a crucial role in the story by complementing and developing each other’s character.
What we learn of the central character is considerable. Throughout the novel her dealings with those around her reveal her characteristics. As a child at Gateshead Hall we see that she is impulsive, often alarmingly so, but that she also can be sullen and withdrawn. Thse around her do not find her an easy child - she gives very little of herself away, especially to the Reed family, although there is a slight intimacy with the servant, Bessie. She is intelligent and precocious, preferring the make believe world of books to the harsh and often unsympathetic world of reality. She is also perceptive; knowing that the Reeds dislike her, yet not being quite sure why it should be so.She feels her social position as an outcast very keenly; ironically being unable, because of her breeding to form an attachment with Bessie. She is occasionally very angry, as when she lashes out at John Reed, and when she rounds on Mrs Reed after the Red Room incident. She is also afraid and insecure, but tries very hard not to let anyone see this side of her character. it is only at times of great stress that she gives way to fear (Red Room), but note that usually she has, even at the early age of ten, great self-control for most of the time.

Catherine's dilemma begins in an overtly conventional yet dismal setting. This is the ordered and understated fashionable New York setting where she is victim to her father's calculated disregard and domineering behaviour and of the perceptions others have of her given their economic and social positions. She is, in Sloper's words, "absolutely unattractive." She is twenty, yet has never before, as Sloper points out, received suitors in the house. Mrs. Almond's protestations that Catherine is not unappealing are little more than a matter of form and she is admonished by Sloper for suggesting he give Catherine "more justice." Mrs. Penniman, for her part, readily perceives that without Catherine's full inheritance, Morris Townsend would have "nothing to enjoy" and proceeds to establish her role in appeasing her brother and giving incoherent counsel to the courtship between Catherine and Townsend. For Townsend himself, Catherine's "inferior characteristics" are a matter of course and a means to a financial end.
