Your cat has been diagnosed with Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). FLUTD describes a collection of conditions that can affect the bladder and urethra of cats. Cats will show signs of difficulty and pain when urinating, increased frequency of urination, and blood in the urine. Affected cats tend to lick their genital area excessively, and sometimes they will urinate outside the litter box, often preferring cool, smooth surfaces like a tile floor or a bathtub. This syndrome can have many possible causes such as stones, obstructions or idiopathic cystitis.
It is strongly recommend feeding your cat a veterinary urinary brand food, such as Hill's c/d Stress or Urinary S/O. This diet is formulated to aid in the dissolution and prevention of struvite uroliths. This diet exists as a dry formulation, but the canned food has the added benefit of extra moisture content.

Also an antispasmodic medication may be prescribed. This should prevent painful urethral spasms that can occur with inflammation trigger by a FLUTD episode. It may also dilate the urethral so that urine can pass easily.
Your cat should be monitored closely for worsening clinical signs. The big risk of FLUTD in male cats is that the struvite crystals form a plug that can block their ability to urinate. If this occurs, it becomes a life-threatening condition, requiring immediate unblockage under sedation and/or general anesthesia. Please continue to ensure your cat is drinking and urinating.
Many management strategies have been proposed to prevent further episodes, with two big proponents being:
1. Feeding primarily canned food (high water content) and increasing water consumption thereby leaving the bladder more distended and the urine more diluted. You may consider getting a drinking fountain which can encourage your cat to drink fresh
...e build-up. This diet also contains urine acidifiers to increase urinary pH which also contributes to the prevention and removal of struvite uroliths. S/D is not recommended as a long term diet due to the increased acidifying effect. After a feeding period of approximately 2-3 months, the diet should be switched to C/D Multicare Feline to help avoid reoccurrence.
2013). Inappropriate use of urinary catheter in patients as stated by the CDC includes patients with incontinence, obtaining urine for culture, or other diagnostic tests when the patient can voluntarily void, and prolonged use after surgery without proper indications. Strategies used focused on initiating restrictions on catheter placement. Development of protocols that restrict catheter placement can serve as a constant reminder for providers about the correct use of catheters and provide alternatives to indwelling catheter use (Meddings et al. 2013). Alternatives to indwelling catheter includes condom catheter, or intermittent straight catheterization. One of the protocols used in this study are urinary retention protocols. This protocol integrates the use of a portable bladder ultrasound to verify urinary retention prior to catheterization. In addition, it recommends using intermittent catheterization to solve temporary issues rather than using indwelling catheters. Indwelling catheters are usually in for a longer period. As a result of that, patients are more at risk of developing infections. Use of portable bladder ultrasound will help to prevent unnecessary use of indwelling catheters; therefore, preventing

Chronic Wasting Disease is a highly transmissible, deadly neurodegenerative disease that affects cervids in North America (Belay et al., 2004; Saunders et al., 2012). There are only four types of cervid that are known to get this disease which include elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, and moose (Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance). It has been classified has a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), otherwise known as a prion disease (Belay et al., 2004). A prion is an irregular, pathogenic agent that causes abnormal folding of specific proteins called prion proteins. These proteins are mostly located in the brain (Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance). The abnormal folding of this protein causes neurodegenerative diseases in a variety of species including humans, sheep, cattle, and deer (Abrams et al., 2011).

Avoid salty foods such as salted nuts and potato chips. These can cause the body to retain water making your bladder full.

One of the most common infections that occur in the urinary system is UTIs or Urinary Tract Infection. A UTI is when bacteria gets into the urinary system, either externally or from the digestive tract, and causes pain and irritation in the urinary tract (Friedl, n.d.). UTIs are typically treated with antibiotics. A common disease of the urinary system is incontinence, which is when you lose some or all of your bladder control (Friedl, n.d.). This can also cause retention problems, which is when you have trouble releasing urine from the bladder (Friedl, n.d.). Incontinence can be treated with medication and exercise that can help to retrain the muscle around the bladder and urethra area (Friedl, n.d.). Interstitial cystitis (IC), also known as painful bladder syndrome (BPS), is a type of chronic bladder condition that is primarily found in women (Zimmermann, 2016). IC can cause bladder pressure and pain, bladder scarring, and can cause less elasticity in the bladder (Zimmermann, 2016). Another form of inflammation in the urinary system is Prostatitis, the swelling of the prostate gland. Prostatitis is significant in that it only occurs in men and is often caused by advanced age (Zimmermann, 2016). It is generally cured by antibiotics. Kidney stones are an extremely painful condition that occurs in the urinary system when chemicals in the urine become
Cystitis is the medical term for inflammation of the urinary bladder. Most of the time, the inflammation is caused by a bacterial infection, and it’s called a urinary tract infection. A bladder infection can be painful and annoying, and it can become a serious health problem if the infection spreads to your kidney.

A urinary tract infection is a very common infection that can happen to anybody. A urinary tract infection usually occurs when bacteria enters the urethra and multiples in the urinary system. The Urinary tract includes the kidneys, the thin tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder (ureters), and the main tube that carries the urine from the bladder (urethra). Women, men, and children are all immune to this infection. Women have the highest chances of getting it. In the Urinary tract, the main links of the ureters help get rid of any bacteria that tries to enter the urine, and the bladder helps prevent urine from backing up into the kidneys.

A dog or cat can be a wonderful addition to any home. They are both very sweet and loveable pet to have. But these two pets could not be more different from each other in a few respect: the amount of attention that is needed, grooming care, and bathroom usage.
