Even monkeys reject unequal pay! In a Francis De Waal and Sarah Bronson study; they showed two monkeys who would each complete the same task, but would receive a different payment/reward. In this case, they both started out by getting one slice of cucumber, they’d repeat the task over and over. One of the monkeys started to receive a grape while the other was still getting cucumber. The monkey receiving cucumber started realizing this and would reject and throw the cucumber, because it too, of course, wanted to be getting grapes also. (“Furious Monkeys Rejecting Unequal Pay Explained: Dnews”) In today’s world many are discriminated against almost daily. Whether it’s about race, gender, religion, appearances, or anything that makes us remotely
different from one another. The one that really stands out to me is “The gender pay gap”. The gender pay gap is a huge problem in our society today. Unequal reward/pay has been an issue for as long as man can remember and unfortunately has not improved by much. Women who are equally qualified and educated as men still aren’t receiving the same amount as men with the same qualifications. That’s where the name gender pay gap comes into play, because women, stereotypically, are supposed to stay home and aren’t supposed to be as qualified as men are to be in the work force. (Learn) Occupations with the larger majority of men employees usually have better commission than female dominated occupations. (Learn) Women from all over our country are 2x more likely to say they've been treated unequally or discriminated against than men. (On Equal Pay Day) That needs to change. Women in 2015 get payed roughly 79% of what men earn in general, and in Idaho they only received 75% of men’s earnings. (“The Simple Truth About Gender Pay Gap Fall 2015”) Although, the gap seemed to be improving for while due to the growing popularity of feminism, in reality it's really starting to widen again because male’s income is growing 2x faster than women’s. Eric Morath from the Wall Street Journal wrote, “The median weekly earnings for full-time male workers was $889 dollars in the third quarter, The Labor Department said Tuesday. That's a 2.2% percent increase from a year earlier. Meanwhile, full-time female workers’ earnings were $721, up only 0.8% from a year earlier.” The gap can also vary and even be greater depending on race, maternity leave, and location.(“The Simple Truth about Gender Pay Gap. Fall 2015”) This may seem wrong and not okay, but it’s true. A lot of times women earn less due to maternity leave because industries don't wanna pay them for the time they've taken off for birth. (“The Simple Truth about Gender Pay Gap. Fall 2015”) A remedy or resolution to the injustice is to: first off, raise awareness of this problem, because it is a problem and women need to be aware that there’s a chance they may be paid unfairly and unequally.(Narrow The Gap) We need to encourage women to speak out against the gap and negotiate their earnings with their bosses/ employers. (Narrow The Gap) Lastly, we just need to make a change. Men need to treat women as their equal in the workforce and inspire them to speak out and, industries need to start allowing paid maternity leave. (Narrow The Gap) We have to speak out and stand up against this unfair and cruel treatment. Gender discrimination is unjust and not okay because we too have the right of treated just as well as any other human-being. And well, today’s society faces many obstacles, equal pay should not be one.
Anne Morell is a seventy-four year old female with a past medical history of hyperlidemia, hypertension, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus type 2, renal insufficiency, Charcot foot, and osteomosteomyeltits. Anne has a history of osteosarcoma treated in 1996 with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Anne also has a history of breast cancer, diagnosis in 2003 treated with radiation therapy. Anne past surgical history includes tonsillectomy in 1962, removal if osteosarcoma of left thigh in 1996 and lumpectomy of left breast in 2003.
Over the past 15 years tremendous awareness has been raised around this and programs of preferential treatment emerged. These programs ensured equal rights for people of color and females in the work place, allowing for them to apply for executive level positions and earn the same amount of money, benefits, and prestige as a white male ensuring equality for all race and sex. Lisa Newton argues that, “reverse discrimination does not advance but actually undermines equality because it violates the concept of equal justice under law for all citizens. In addition, to this theoretical objection to reverse discrimination, Newton opposes it because she believes it raises insoluble problems.” Among them are determining what groups have been sufficiently discriminated against in the past to deserve preferred treatment in the present and determining the degree of reverse discrimination that will be compensatory. Newton outlines the importance of ensuring her argument is recognized as logically distinct from the condition of justice in the political sense. She begins her argument for reverse discrimination as unjustified by addressing the “simple justice” claim requiring that we favor women and blacks in employment and education opportunities. Since women and blacks were unjustly excluded from such opportunities for so many years in the not so distant past, however when employers and schools favor women and blacks, the same injustice is done. This reverse discrimination violates the public equality which defines citizenship and destroys the rule of law for the areas in which these favors are granted. To the extent that we adopt a program of discrimination, reverse or otherwise, justice in the political sense is destroyed, and none of us, specifically affected or no is a citizen, as bearers of rights we are all petitioners
This module of study has focused on many aspects of human health, anatomy, and the disease process. It has included such topics as the human organ systems, the mechanism of disease and the resulting disruption of homeostasis, the integumentary system, and the musculoskeletal system. The following case studies explore how burn classification will affect treatment, how joint injuries can disrupt mobility, and last, how a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to a decline in a person’s health status. The importance of understanding disease and knowing when to seek treatment is the first step toward enjoying a balanced and healthy life.
The case study of Angela and Adam describes a situation in which a Caucasian teenage mother, Angela, does not appear to have a bond with her 11 month old son, Adam. According to Broderick and Blewitt (2015) Angela and Adam live in the home with Angela’s mother, Sarah. Angela’s relationship with her own mother is described as a bit dysfunctional as Sarah is reported to continue to be angry with Angela for becoming pregnant in the first place. Sarah’s anger has caused her to deny Adam’s father the ability to come to the home and play an active role in Adam’s life, therefore putting more of a strain on Angela who has already had to drop out of high school in attempt to take care of Adam on her own. Angela has openly admitted
My second example is natural hair in the workplace. They deem our hair unkempt, nappy and unprofessional. However, they want us to conform to European standards and have us straighten our hair. Last but not least, while the average white woman gets paid $0.77 to every non-Hispanic white man earns, black women are paid $0.64, and Latina women are paid $0.55.
The struggle for pay equity is part of America's evolving sense of what is fair and just. After all, slavery was once an accepted part of this democratic nation; union
The patient, LL, is a twenty four year old female who was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder five years ago. Around the ago of eighteen, LL started to experience many symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. She had just started her freshman year at a local college and moved into the dorms with a random roommate. LL was constantly washing her hands and grossed out by the germs, so she came to realize she had a phobia of germs. She would begin sweating and having major anxiety when people went to shake her hand or her roommate would touch her food or any of her things. LL started skipping class and isolating herself in her room in order to avoid contact with other people. When her grades dramatically declined,
In today’s world, the American still has barriers to overcome in the matter of racial equality. Whether it is being passed over for a promotion at the job or being underpaid, some people have to deal with unfair practice that would prevent someone of color or the opposite sex from having equal opportunity at the job. In 2004, Dukes vs. Wal-Mart Stores Incorporation was a civil rights class-action suite that ruled in favor of the women who worked and did not received promotions, pay and certain job assignments. This proves that some corporations ignore the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which protects workers from discrimination based on sex, race, religion or national origin.
The reality of wage differences between men and women is that above all changes women continue to earn less than men. Countless arguments have promoted that wage inequality has changed and that everyone finally receives an equal amount of pay. “For women of color, the gap is largest of all: In 2006, black and Hispanic women earned 86 and 87 cents on the white man’s dollar, respectively,” (Mcswane 2). If a woman is lucky enough she will get an equal pay compared to a man doing the same job. But it is challenging for a woman of a minority background to achieve this. Not only are women paid less because of their sex, but also because of their race. There seems to be a mentality that because someone is a woman and a minority that they cannot do the same job as men or that women do not have the same education as the men, so employers do not have to pay them the same. “When the numbers are broken down by district, they 're pretty hard to ignore. Women in Texas are being utterly screwed financially, according to the data compiled by AAWU, with women earning anywhere from 66 percent of what men do in some districts, to the top end of things, which is about 89 percent,” (Leicht 4). The proof cannot be ignored. It i...
Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. Thus we conclude superiority and inferiority associated with racial differences are often socially constructed to satisfy the socio-political agenda of the dominant group”(Heewon Chang,Timothy Dodd;2001;1).
Have you ever had equal rights just as much as someone who had more money than you or was in higher power than you? Most people may not believe in equal human rights, but it should happen even in the most pore places.
Discrimination is known to exist in all workplaces, sometimes it is too subtle to notice, and other times it is exceedingly obvious. It is known that everyone subconsciously discriminates, dependant on their own beliefs and environments that surround them. However, discrimination can be either positive or negative in their results, and sometimes discrimination is a necessary part of life.
Discrimination at work is a touchy issue. Most people, if not all, have experienced some sort or form of it and they ignored it, quit, or got fired from their job. Women tend to be more emotional than men and when women are judged and discriminated they are offended by it immediately. Also, the fact of women getting a lower income than men for the same job is almost unbelievable. It is very important to be concerned on the issue because it is constantly increasing throughout the United States. It upsets me that women are paid less than men because women have the same ability and work ethic as men do, but they are looked at differently. According to AAUW, women are making 77 percent of what men make. This rate hasn’t changed since 2002 (Hill, 2013). Statistics show that women will never make as much as men due to the thought of never being comparable to men (Williams, 2013).
they are not paid equally. Study shows that in 1900 one of the five people in the U.S. paid work
What kind of nature is it that allows the thought that human beings are owed some special kind of privileges and kind of treatment? In his essay “ Human dignity” Francis Fukuyama examines what sets humans apart from other species. What Fukuyama believes makes humans special is often referred to as “Factor X”; something that no other species has. Some qualities of Factor X are individual characteristics such as skin color, looks, or social class. Other components of Factor X relate to the mental capacities of humans. The belief that everyone should be treated equally is a thought that many argue; regardless of our social norm, nonhuman species should be treated equally as well. There is really no specific advantage of one species over another.
