“Frederick’s of Hollywood, brainchild of the inventor of the push-up bra and purveyor of “marry-a-millionaire” lingerie since 1947” (Blakemore, 2015). Frederick’s created the “sex sells” image for themselves especially marrying a millionaire. They cannot go back from this and just try to reinvent themselves to cater to the everyday women when the company was built from these products. Frederick’s of Hollywood’s catalogs have most of the women in bed in the most uncomfortable position in the most uncomfortable looking lingerie. Victoria’s Secret catalogs are on a beachy location or just on location, not just a set. “That is, demureness is sexy in a middle-class setting and directness is sexy in a working-class setting.” (Blakemore, 2015). The catalogs create the ambiance of where the girls are when they are wearing the lingerie, therefore, it makes us the people shopping from these catalogs feel like we need to be in that place or atmosphere to wear what they are

“Macy’s operating margin in 3Q15 fell to 4.4% from 6.8% in 3Q14, mainly due to asset impairment charges of $111 million related to the plans to close 35 to 40 stores in early 2016 (Bailey).” This decline was a result from not only lower sales but the company’s investments in digital growth in its Bluemercury expansion, as well as cost of entry into the China market and additional investment in the Backstage stores (Bailey). These factors could have appeared more detrimental if it had not been for the lower marketing expenses, restructuring initiatives, and a reduction in bonus accrual that were intended to counteract weak sales performance (Bailey). Higher digital growth helped to offset the decrease in earnings ("Macy 's Earnings Fall for
A newspaper article entitled” Retailers ask: Where Did the teenagers go?” focused on one of the issues. Elizabeth Harris from the New York Times interviewed teenagers who used to shop at A&F and asked them what they think about when it comes to shopping at Abercrombie. One teenager replied” when I think of who is shopping at Abercrombie, I think it’s more of people’s parents shopping for them” (Harris). This raised red flags for me because when I was about 14 or 15, if you didn’t wear a Abercrombie shirt or a pair of pants from the company, you weren’t considered “cool”. It’s like everyone in high school had an Abercrombie, Hollister, or Gilly Hicks shirt on; so to hear a teenager say this shows that once luring traditional teenager store is obviously experiencing some tough
In December 2003, Abercrombie and Fitch decided to stop issuing its quarterly magazine, which it had published in addition to its catalogs since 1997. In a statement issued at the time of the recall, Abercrombie said, "While it has enjoyed success with the Quarterly over the years, the company believes it is time for new thinking and looks forward to unveiling an innovative and exciting campaign in the spring." "We just felt it was time to retire it and come back with something that has beautiful imagery and classical photos," said Hampton Carney, company spokesman, in the Times. "... But that doesn't mean they're going to go totally conservative and lose their nerve. According to CNN.com, Abercrombie said that the recall of the magazine was due to the need for counter space for a perfume, but opponents of the catalog are saying that it was in response to protests against its racy content, such as nude models and articles about sex. Criticism is not new to Abercrombie's marketing strategies; groups such as the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, the American Decency Association, and the Focus on the Family organization have protested against its sexual content for several years, according to the New York Times.

American Apparel is a story of rags to riches and back to rags. It rapidly grew into one of the most well known and most controversial clothing companies in the world. The company began with a simple goal, making a profit selling local and ethically-manufactured blank t-shirts, sweatshirts, and jeans that were moderately priced. American Apparel managed to disturb the entire fashion industry with it’s unique identity, constantly pushing the envelope with its controversial methods of branding. The logo-free garments became an iconic uniform for young liberal adults. How could this company quickly become a symbol of what is cool and edgy and equally as fast file for bankruptcy?
As we know from the case Abercrombie and Fitch has been criticized for its promoting systems because of its in-store advertisements of solid men and tempting ladies posturing verging on stripped in suggestive ways.(case) Even if we know that it is A&F strategy,we also can see that the main customers of A&F is t-agers. The point is that A&F is under the pressure and hard critic from older generation (parents) because the main target market of A&F is t-agers or college kids, it is providing or promoting sex and sexuality of models who works there rather than promoting the clothes and brand. But know A&F is in the right way. !Now Abercrombie & Fitch will end by July its "sexualized marketing," after years of blanketing its web sites, store windows

The Albany-based fashion retailer Abercrombie & Fitch (A&F), once renowned for selling sexy tight shirts to teen, has reported sales of $685.5 million for the quarter, down by $20 million compared to a year ago. The once popular apparel retailer is now in serious trouble as sales have plunged, along with their stock at a sixth year low. Some believed the blame for Abercrombie’s flat sales was related to their former CEO Mike Jefferies who stepped down December 2014. The highly discriminatory CEO was criticized for his comments about wanting “cool, good-looking people” to wear his company’s clothes. Today as the company’s clothing has fallen out of fashion, only 13% of people still shop at Abercrombie, with the other 36% stating rarely and 54% replied to never shop there.
Customer satisfaction, for some, is currently low because of the company’s notably provocative advertisements. Should the company choose this alternative of not making any changes to the nature of those advertisements, customer satisfaction is likely to continue to drop. The corporate image will also remain low, although a portion of this is due to the publicity of Dov Charney’s legal issues with sexual harassment lawsuits, and inappropriate behaviour within the company. American Apparel’s current mission to be organic, natural with their models, and be airbrush free will remain the same; however, racy and controversial advertisements
