Carla Zampatti is an Italian born, Australian designer whose impressive collections have made her brand one of Australia’s biggest fashion houses and has come to be internationally renowned. When in Italy, Carla would often visit the dress makers with her mother. When growing up, the family did not have large amounts of money nor did they live in a main city but once or twice a year her mother would buy a new outfit. Italian dress makers are very creative and Carla states, ‘they are all basically fashion designers’. Each of her collections are more exciting than the last with her sophisticated tailoring and high quality fabrics, her design style can be seen as adventurous but beautiful, made to create a flattering, feminine figure , beautiful and quality dependable clothing. Having this range has contributed to her success levels as there is something for anyone. In the fashion business, it is important to look head and see the social and cultural movements in order to understand the fashion environment and be one step ahead. Seeing which direction the industry will turn puts the designer in a position to make wiser decisions. Fashion is connected to the rest of our lives and the designers recognise this, weather its the way we decorate our homes, how or where we travel, the way we communicate, how we dress and how we communicate; all of these factors lead to a successful fashion designer. Fashion is Damaging Women Fashion is a constantly changing industry; what is trendy one day is outdated the next. The 21st century has been a catalyst for a large movement in fashion. Women’s sartorial will experience many more future modifications which are predicted to be less modest and conservative. Men, on the other hand, will most likely not endure many changes. As fashion flourishes, society’s image on women, as well as men, will renovate into a more exposed mentality with a greater assortment of acceptance.
Gabrielle Chanel remains one of the most well-known fashion designers of all time. She was born on August 19, 1883 in France and died in 1971. Chanel revolutionized the fashion industry with her distinctive style. After the death of her mother, she spent much of her childhood in an orphanage. The challenges of her early life helped build her strong character which influenced her path in life. Chanel was nicknamed “Coco” after a lost dog in a popular song she loved to sing. Her early career was funded by a succession of her rich lovers. This allowed her to open her first shop in Paris in 1910. She sold hats as well as some garments. Coco developed a significant following of clientele who enjoyed her practical sportswear creating great success.

Coco Chanel, born Gabrielle Bonhuer Chanel, on August 19, 1883 in Saumur, France was an amazing woman who redefined fashion as we know it today. She was a clothing designer who revolutionized the fashion industry with her suits, little black dresses, and avant garde flare. Because of this quickly in her young life she became well know, and rose to be the fashion icon that she is today. From the timeless designs that are still popular to this day, and the sophisticated outfits that can be paired with great accessories Chanel has done it all. Fashion has been around ever since ancient times, since the time of the Romans, it survived the world wars and is yet today a business with rapid changes. Fashion started off as an art form, a way for the rich to show their social status with unique and innovative designs that only they could afford. It was a way to separate the social classes of the society. In this paper I will include the creators of haute couture, and how the following designers developed couture, as well as leading names in today’s ready-to-wear industry. The list is long, but I chose to focus on the three most important designers in the modern fashion industry.
Michelle Obama states that, “You can't make decisions based on fear and the possibility of what might happen.” In the novel The Secrets We Keep, the main character, Ella Lawton, makes the decision to pretend she is her dead, identical twin sister. Ella’s choice, that others might find abnormal or bizzare, forces her to make profuse adjustments to her current lifestyle and face difficult conflicts, which affects everyone else in her life. Ella Lawton and her twin sister, Maddy Lawton, get into a tragic car accident that leaves Maddy dead. Ella wakes up in the hospital and is surrounded with friends and family that believe she is her beloved sister.
When Lady Mary went to a fashion show in London, the design of clothes tended to be practical and professional. For instance, women suit was popular. Referring to the history, the most well-known luxury brand Coco Chanel was rise during WWI. She encouraged clothing along with comfort and greater freedom of movement. In order to create the professional image for women, she designed the first suit for women and became popular for women in the 1920s.
“Once she began to apply herself, Chanel became a femme d’entreprise forever. Throughout the remainder of her life she would work unremittingly as craftsman and business woman, imposing her personal conception of the art of dressing upon an ever-expanding clientele” (Charles-Roux 6-7). Even though Chanel left the fashion industry during the war and was heavily criticized for it, she was and still is one of the most famous fashion designers (Charles-Roux 7-8). Until her death, Chanel continued working on new designs that were accustomed to her style (“Coco Chanel Biography” par. 20). In 1971, Chanel died at the age of 88. To this day, her house still exists. Chanel is buried in Switzerland with five stone lions surrounding her tomb (Gabrielle par. 1). Because of Chanel’s new bold ideas, the women’s fashion industry has forever been changed (Charles-Roux 6).
Yves Saint Laurent is indisputably one of the grand masters of fashion, a true couturier, a pioneer and a rebel. He created more than beautiful, articulated and fine garments; he reinvented the ‘woman’ as an archetype in fashion, he incorporated art in his design in a way that is vague if he was a designer or an artist in heart. He dedicated his whole life to the pursuit of the absolute inspiration, of true beauty and breaking the rules. Throughout his life, Yves Saint Laurent, was torn between the West and the East, prudence and recklessness, conservatism and innovation, but he was never unprogressive. His designs portray this conflict and perhaps this is what gives them an air of mystery, of unprecedented elegance and grit. As Duras says, “Yves Saint Laurent invents a reality and adds it to the other, the one he has not made. And he fuses all of this paradoxical harmony-often revolutionary, always dazzling.” His legacy is beyond of being a designer, a couturier; he is a reformer, a passionate rebel, whose progressive views expanded beyond making beautiful garments for people with expensive taste and status; beyond couture.
From selling purely ladies’ footwear, Charles and Keith expanded their range of products to include ladies’ bags and accessories in order to cater different demands of the customers. Charles and Keith owns a team of designers that come out with new products regularly and the company has their own R&D team frequently travels to fashion cities to get in touch with the latest design and trend (Singapore Press Holdings, 2009).
Fashion takes on many different facets and concerns many subsets— a model sashaying down the runway in a gown encrusted in real gems, Lady Gaga’s infamous dress made of cuts of raw beef, a teenage girl obsessing over the season’s latest styles— it is all an expression of our minds and who we are or want to be, made tangible. It is a medium just like any other, for while artists wield brushes and paints, designers use thread and cloth to illustrate their vision. The artistry is none more so apparent than in the exclusive world of haute couture, a world of extravagance that caters to aesthetics, producing one-of-a-kind wearable masterpieces that are made to be admired rather than worn. It is without doubt, high fashion and its design is an art.
