The University of Alabama Trumpet Ensemble performed in The University of Alabama’s School of Music, Moody Music Hall, on Monday, November 14, 2016. The concert was conducted by Dr.Eric Yates, and it featured members of The University of Alabama Trumpet Studio. The concert opened with the image of two choirs in the piece Canzon Septimi Toni No. 2 by Giovanni Gabrieli. The two choirs created a polyphonic texture, and featured moments of a transition from a major key to a minor key. The piece had a moderato tempo marking or moderate, but also featured moments of ritardando or slowing the tempo for a short moment. The piece features two different parts of music, the fugue or a short melody or phrase is introduced by one part and then taken up by others and expands by entwining the parts, is started after a short introduction of the piece. The tempo of the piece seemed to be allegro, or fast paced, energetically. This piece also features a homophonic texture in which different parts on the same instrument create a different melody while still sounding harmonic. The next piece Someone To Watch Over Me by George Gershwin featuring soloist Jonathan Mayanja. The piece features two different instruments, the trumpet and the flugelhorn. The sounds of the two instruments create a very rich sound. The different instruments portray a choral sound in which a soprano line and bass line can be heard. The sound of the different voices produce a polyphonic texture. This musical effect expresses the fiery fortissimo to the silent pianissimo. The piece is a jazz style and has a slight swing feel to its adagio or slow tempo as well as the piece also featured a legato
