Cancers Battle
As we know cancer is a serious incurable disease that effects 1 out of 4 people in their lifetime. It’s a serious epidemic that plagues a serious problem with everyone knowing alest one person from dying from this goliath disease know as cancer. However, there isn’t just one type of cancer, there are hundreds and unfortunately I cannot cover every single one, but what I would like to do is hit up the main notable ones. The well know household cancer names that might grab your attention for its devastating damage’s or even death are breast cancer, brain cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer.
As we dive into breast cancer we can see that it is a cancer that forms in cells of the breast usually

in a cluster. Inside the breast there consists of lobules, ducts, fatty and connective tissue; as well as blood vessels and lymph vessels. The milk-producing ducts and glands are the two most likely areas to develop cancerous cells where they are more prone to gather. In rarer cases, breast cancer begins in fatty tissues, also known as the stromal tissues. Breast cancer may also occur in surrounding lymph nodes, especially those of the underarm or near the underarm area. A notable fact is that “Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among American women. One in eight women will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime.” There are many options to treat breast cancer you can target breast tumors with some of the most advanced treatments and technology available in this day of age. The accredited Breast Cancer Program offers the top of the line most advanced programs in radiation, surgery and chemotherapy, with a high quality of care. With these three main option your doctor’s will exam you and be able to recommend the best route to take to eliminate the cancer, for with each patient the outcomes and routes are different. What is Brain Cancer you might ask? Well the primary brain cancer develops from cells within the brain, it is all part of the central nervous system known as the (CNS). The brain is the control center for vital functions of the body as we all know. Which involves speech, movement, thoughts, feelings, memory, vision, hearing and much, much more. It is like the control panel for the body. The primary brain tumors are classified by the type of cell or tissue the tumor affects, it is all on the location and grade of the tumor which is critical. Tumor cells are more than likely to travel short distances within the brain, and therefore generally won't travel outside of the brain itself. When cancer develops elsewhere in the body and spreads which is another word for “metastasizes” to the brain, it is called a secondary brain tumor, or metastatic brain cancer which is the hardest to treat! “The Cancer Treatment of America” has learned that metastatic brain tumors are more common than the secondary primary brain tumors. Some of the well-known cancers that commonly spread to the brain can include lung, colon, kidney and breast cancer! An unbelievable fact about brain cancer is that “Each year, over 190,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a brain tumor.” (National Brain Tumor Society). As well as “It is estimated that 22,850 new cases of brain and other nervous system cancers will be diagnosed in 2015, with the median age at the time of diagnosis being 58.” (National Cancer Institute). There are two types of brain cancer the first is benign primary brain tumors, which are not cancerous. They grow very slowly, and tend to be more amendable to surgical or other treatments with a much higher success rate. However, that is not to say benign brain tumors cannot still damage normal brain tissue and cause serious problems. However, the second type is much more dangerous and fatal and is known as malignant brain tumors. Malignant brain tumors are way more aggressive by definition. They grow at a fast rate and invade and destroy many structures more aggressively. Metastatic brain tumors are tumors that spread “metastasize” to the brain from another location or spot in the body. This could be from the lung, colon, breast or even the kidney. The sad truth is that metastatic brain tumors are more common than primary brain tumors as well as more fatal! Treatment’s for brain cancer that target primary and metastatic brain tumors can be done by radiation, surgery and chemotherapy. The doctors will exam the state of which the cancer is in and best evaluate the greatest success route. With this cancer taking place in a vital part of the human body errors or traumas become more likely; Therefore, therapies like oncology rehabilitation, pain management and naturopathic medicine can help to reduce pain, preserve mobility and improve cognitive skills. With the boomer baby’s getting older and cigarette’s are now being blamed for many medical issues it comes by no surprise lung cancer joins the list of most notable cancers!
Here’s the visual picture of how it happens, the lungs are two large organs made of spongy tissue, which lie above the diaphragm and just below the rib cage. When you take breath in your lungs absorb oxygen and deliver it to the bloodstream as we all know. That it where it’s pumped throughout the body and distributed. When you exhale your lungs remove carbon dioxide, also known as a waste gas, from the blood stream. So now that we get the basic understanding of how are lungs work this is where lung cancer comes …show more content…
in. Lung cancer comes in and interferes with this vital process and can make breathing ten times more difficult. Here’s how it works, lung cancers can start in the cells lining the bronchi, which is the main breathing tube. There the lung cancers is thought to start in areas of pre-cancerous changes in the lung. The first changes to happen are that the genes of the cells themselves begin to grow at a faster rate. At this time the cells may seem to look abnormal if seen under a microscope, but at this point they do not form a mass or tumor just yet! However, over time, these pre-cancerous changes in the cells may progress to true cancer. Meaning as cancer develops, the cancer cells may begin to make chemicals that cause new blood vessels to form nearby or in close range. These new blood vessels unfortunately begin to provide and nourish the cancer cells, which in return begin to grow and form a much larger tumor big enough to be seen on imaging tests such as an x-ray. After this the cells from the cancer may break away from the original tumor and spread (metastasize) to other parts of the body, since the lungs are the air way to the body. Lung cancer spreads in a very easy way, because it tends to spread before it can even be detected on an imaging test like a chest x-ray. Facts about lung cancer is that “It is the second most common non-skin cancer among American men and women, after prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women.
Smoking significantly increases a person’s chance of developing this disease, but people who have never smoked may develop lung cancer as well.” (ACS) According to the American Cancer Society, “The lifetime risk of developing lung cancer is about 1 in 13 for men and 1 in 16 for women. In 2016, an estimated 224,390 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States.”
It’s a Beautiful sunny day out enjoying a nice walk on the beach, nothing to worry about right? Think again, hidden behind this seemingly perfect day a cancer is born! Skin cancer is a wide term that is used to refer to any type of cancer that begins in the cells of the skin. These cancer cells usually develop in the top layer of skin, which is also known as the epidermis.
The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma cancer. The easiest way to put how skin cancer starts is that its a case of normal cells going bad and then growing at an alarming rate. This population or growth of abnormal cells becomes more and more massive eventually until they take over resources such as blood supply and nutrients. It's a mostly overlooked and unchecked revolution in your body. Many don’t think of such things when exposing themselves to the
sun. "Oncogenesis" is the medical term for this process of transformation that occurs when the healthy cells become malignant and begin top spread. It all begins with the sun’s or any other harmful UV radiation causes DNA damage, which in turn then causes all kinds of genes to be triggered and mutated. For example, there is a specific gene that’s job is to regulate the cell growth cycle and which in a result will prevent tumors. This gene is like an intelligence guard in the field keeping everything in line and in order. When it spots something wrong, P53 “Intelligence Guard” calls and orders other genes to create a cell-cycle blockade, like a wall to stop the growth of the cell so the DNA can be repaired. If by any chance a cell has been damaged beyond repair, P53 can induce or program cell death, which to me acts like a commuter programmer. The damaged cell basically commits suicide, which in return shuts down forever. This therfore prevents the retention of mutations or uncontrollable growth. If a cell cannot stop and fix its DNA damage, that cell will make a new population of mutated cells, and by definition that is in return cancer. If the P53 gene, the guardian as you will of the DNA program, is somehow traumatized by sun damage, a mutant population of cells can proliferate and spread at an alarming rate. Skin cancers however usually occur after years of cumulative sun damage. Work Cited What type of cancer are you interested in learning more about? (0001). What is skin cancer ? first, Skin is the largest organ of the body . it gives our body protection from harms, injuries and infections. It also organize the body temperature and dispose of waste substances through the glands . out layer of the skin is called the epidermis and the layer underneath is known as the dermis . Skin cancer is type of disease where malignant cancer cells are to be found the outer layer of a person's skin and is the uncontrolled development of the irregular skin cells .It occurs when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunlight or genetic defects, that lead the skin cells to duplicate rapidly and form malignant tumors. there are three main types of skin cancer which are basal
Basil Cell Carcinoma begins in the deepest layer of the epidermis of the skin. The epidermis is known as the top layer of the skin. The skin is composed of 3 layers, the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue. The basal layer which is part of the epidermis, there are cells called melanocytes, which produce a black pigment called melanin. Melanin is what protects your skin from over exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Over exposure of sunlight can reduce the melanin’s ability to absorb the sunlight and damage the skin. (2)
Over the past decade breast cancer has become one of the most predominant diseases in the United States. Breast cancer starts out as a malignant tumor in the tissues of the breast which is formed from the uncontrolled growth of abnormal breast cells. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, but it can also appear in men. (Stephan, 2010)
Melanoma starts in the melanocytes. Melanocytes are the cells that make the pigment melanin according to (www.skincancer.org). Cancerous growths can develop from UV lights and the sun. A source of UV lights would be tanning bed. These sources caused cells to trigger mutation. The trigger mutations cause genetic defects. Genetic defects leads to skin cell multiply and form malignant tumors.
Skin cancer is a disease in which malignant cancer cells are found in the outer layer of the human skin. This particular cancer is one of the most common cancers among the U.S. population, affecting and spreading over more than one million people a year. “Skin cancer is categorized into two separate groups being; malignant melanomas and non-melanoma cancers.” (Adam, 2013)
Cancer is a very large issue in the world. Cancer is a sickness that can lead to many life threatening problems and can eventually lead to death. There are many different kinds of cancer that can effect a person without them even knowing it is there. One type of cancer that can be easier to detect would be skin cancer. Skin cancer can be diagnosed by seeing a doctor or dermatologist, if they see an abnormal mole or spot on your skin, they many ask to remove the spot and test it in their laboratory. If the spot or mole comes back positive for skin cancer, they next will run more tests to see if it has spread throughout the body. The first thing the doctor will ask you is the time frame from when you first started noticing this on your body,
In 2014, approximately 76,000 Americans will be diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer. Melanoma is the most common and most dangerous skin cancer there is. Anyone can get melanoma when not protecting their skin. Throughout this paper there will be discussed the causes, treatments, protection and prevention, and also the effects melanoma has on the human body. Melanoma skin cancer is a cancer that Americans should be more aware of and should take greater precautions when exposing their skin to the sun.
According to “Medical News Today” cancer is a disease that is caused by an over growth of anomalous cells on one or more lungs. Cells often go up the air pipes which can cause difficulty to breath. Due to the over production of cells the tissue cells often begin to over produce; which results in tumors. There are two types of tumors: malignant and benign. Malignant tumors are the more dangerous of the two due to its invasive nature; which makes it cancerous. While benign is not invasive in other words non-cancerous. This is why cancer spreads to multiple areas and can be sometimes very difficult to fight. Cancer cells are abnormal not only because of their evasive nature, but also because of its irregular life cycle. Rather than expire like a regular cell, they continuously grow and duplicate which causes the disease to spread. This makes cell abnormal in shape and other qualities; known as a sickle cell. Due to the large growth and reproduction rate of the cells this makes the spreading of the cancer more rapid. Each cancer has specific symptom, for lung cancer the sympto...
In the United States 85 to 90 percent of all lung cancer cases are related to smoking. Cigarette smoking is the main cause of lung cancer (Scientific American, “Lung Cancer';). Second-hand smoke, inhaled by non-smokers, increases a person’s chance of acquiring lung cancer (Beau Halton). Men who smoke increase their chance of dying from lung cancer about 23 times and women increase their chances 13 times (“Lung Cancer Awareness Campaign,'; 3/23/99). However, lung cancer may also be caused by long term exposure to radon, a naturally present radioactive gas (SIRS, “What is Cancer?';). The residue of burned petroleum and coal can contribute to lung cancer (Scientific American, “Lung Cancer';). The development of lung cancer seems to be also affected by genes. The gene histidine triad blocks the formation of tumors, so a defective gene could make one more likely to form a tumor (Microsoft, “Lung Cancer';).
Even though skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, it is also preventable if you know the right steps to take. Education on the different types of cancer, risk factors, and preventative measures will help to decrease your chances of ever hearing that dreaded diagnosis “cancer”. Do self-skin checks every month and take those extra steps to protect yourself when you are outside in the sun. It will pay off in the long run.
According to American Cancer Society, statistic shows over 228,190 new cases of lung cancer are reported yearly, that’s 57% men and 43% women of the pie. The number shows lung cancer is likely happen to men. Also the estimated reported death is 159,480, mostly 54% men and only 46% women. The concern on lung cancer contributes 27% of the cancer death in United States. The contribution of lung cancer plays a big pie on many deaths in American. Also, most of the patients are men. The chance that a man will develop lung cancer in his lifetime is about 1 in 13; for a woman, the risk is about 1 in 16. These numbers include both smokers and non-smokers. For smokers the risk is much higher, while for non-smokers the risk is lower. (Accor...
Skin cancer is a disease that begins in cells, the building blocks that make up the biggest organ in the human body, which is the skin. Normally in the human body, skin cells grown and divide into many to form new cells taking place the cells that grow old and die. Therefore, skin cancer occurs when the orderly process goes wrong so there is an uncontrolled growth of abnormal meaning that it leads the skin cells to multiply rapidly and grow onto others tissues forming malignant tumors. Even though skin cancer forms in the skin, they are classified based on the types of cells where the cancer starts; Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma.
Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world. Although, it is a challenging cancer to treat more ways and treatments are being presented and studied daily. Lung cancer is a deadly disease that presents many problems in a person’s life. There are ways to decrease your chance of developing cancer, but there are too many environmental factors that play a role in cancer to be sure you can positively prevent it.
Skin cancer is a disease where cancer (malignant) cells are found on the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). The three types of cells found in the epidermis are squamous cells, basal cells, and melanocytes. These cells in time grow to be cancerous. Thus, the three types of skin cancers are squamous cell, basal cell, and melanoma. Melanoma is the most deadliest and destructive type of cancer. (“Skin Cancer” infotrac.com) The number of people with melanoma has risen in Scotland from 3.5 in 1979 to 10.6 per 100,000 in 1998 for men and 7.0 to 13.1 for women. (Miller 945) Squamous cell and Basal cell skin cancer can kill up to 2,200 people a year in the United States. (Sommerfield SIRS.com) Basal cell, being the most common type of skin cancer, is the cancer that about 75 percent of the people have. (“Skin Cancer “ infotrac.com) Melanoma is mostly seen in older men but ever since tanning came in during the 1970’s, it has increased in women 60 percent around the ages 15-29 over the past three decades.(Sommerfield SIRS.com) “And basal cell and squamous cell cancers are increasing at a rate of about 5 percent per year”(Sommerfield SIRS.com).
The lifelong question: do we choose to be selfless and ignore our own wants, or be selfish and fulfill our own desires, but slowly selfishness consumes you until there is nothing left? This has been a question that has consumed humans for centuries. It has been present since the dawn of time, and is mentioned in countless books. The fight between being selfish or selfless is in countless religious, philosophical, and self-help books. This idea is even present in William Golding’s well-known book Lord of the Flies.
