Since then, the single-interest niche publication about cigars has turned into a men’s luxury lifestyle magazine with almost 300,000 subscribers and a total audience of over 1.8 million readers per issue. The magazine is given much credit to sparking a great resurgence in cigar popularity throughout the 1990s. Its motto? “The Goodlife Magazine for Men.”

The Americas unknown until Christopher Columbus’ voyage in 1492 became a major part of the world economy as many European nations colonized much of the land. Large sea trade arose during this time period first by the Portuguese and Spanish and later by the English, French and Dutch. As European countries began exploring the Americas, an exchange of crops, animals, raw materials, diseases and new ideas were exchanged between the Americas and the rest of the world. This is known as the Columbian Exchange. One major component of the Columbian Exchange was the discovery of tobacco. Tobacco was first discovered in the Americas and became as cash crop. It was imported back to Europe, where it became vastly popular. As many middle class Europeans people began smoking, the demand for more tobacco from the Americas increased; colonies were set up to produce tobacco. With the demand for tobacco so high, labor was needed to farm the crop causing slaves to be imported.

The advertisement for Camel cigarettes appears in the February 2015 issue of Popular Mechanics magazine. Prominently displayed in the middle of this full-page ad is a pack of Camel cigarettes. The line “Since 1913” has an eye-catching effect caused by the off-white colored font and blue background found on the pack of cigarettes. The ad uses a mahogany background, which helps make the predominantly off-white colored pack of cigarettes the main focal point of the ad. Camel uses its signature Coffin Nails font when displaying the brand’s name in large text centered at the very top of the ad in capital letters. Right under the arc created by the brand's name is the statement, “MARK THE MOMENTS.” In the upper left side of the ad, objects appear blurred making it unclear what they are. Half of a harmonica is visible as the other half is under the pack of cigarettes propping the pack up at a slight angle. A small image of a camel resides next to the line “TASTE IT ALL.” At the bottom left-hand side of the ad, a white text box appears with a warning from the Surgeon General. The ad for Joe Camel cigarettes has created quite a bit of controversy since its first arrival in the United States; the number one question, was the ad targeting children or adults? Joe Camel was created in 1974, in Europe by Nicholas Price who was a British artist. This ad was done for a French advertising agency and was used in other countries during the 1970s. Old Joe was the original name that was used and was found on Camel packs going back to 1913. During a campaign that marked the 75th anniversary in 1998 the cartoon became a household name. Tobacco was originally consumed and related to certain populations and beliefs. The end of the 20th century saw new laws regulating where people could smoke. This was basically because at that time the major health effects, such as cancer, associated to with smoking were revealed.

Smoking is a simple process of inhaling and exhaling the fumes of burning tobacco, but it has deadly consequences. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking is the most preventable cause of death in America today (Encarta, 2002). Until the 1940?s, smoking was considered harmless. It was at this time that epidemiologists noticed a dramatic increase in the cases of lung cancer. A study was then conducted between smokers and nonsmokers to determine if cigarettes were the cause of this increase. This study, conducted by the American Cancer Society, found increased mortality among smokers. Yet it was not until 1964 that the Surgeon General put out a report acknowledging the danger of cigarettes. The first action to curb smoking was the mandate of a warning on cigarette packages by the Federal Trade Commission (Encarta, 2002). In 1971, all cigarette advertising was banned from radio and television, and cities and states passed laws requiring nonsmoking sections in public places and workplaces (Encarta, 2002). Now in some cities smoking is being completely banned from public places and workplaces and various people are striving for more of these laws against smoking.
During World War I, smoking became hugely popular with soldiers in battlefields of northern Europe and cigarettes became known as ‘soldier’s smoke’. In 1964, the United States Surgeon General Luther Terry announced that smoking caused lung cancer. Shortly after, in 1965, the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act required US Surgeon General’s warning’s on cigarette packs.
