James Finermore Cooper was a revolutionary writer of his time and is still influencing writers today as a traditional writer of American Romanticism.
He was born to William and Elizabeth Cooper in Burlington, New Jersey on September 15, 1789. Cooper’s father was a congressman during the Washington administration. Elizabeth was a member of a New Jersey Quaker family and William was the founder of a frontier settlement. At one year old, his family moved to a primitive settlement in upstate New York. As the 11th of 12 children, he was fortunate to not have to endure the rough part of frontier of life. Most of his education was without books and teaching from his family.
Despite his limited education, Cooper was accepted into Yale in 1803. Little is known about his college career, except that he was high spirited and was expelled for a prank. One thing we do know, he was the best Latin scholar. Because of the prank and a strong-willed father, he was signed into the navy in 1805. After a short and dull career in the new navy, Cooper decided to settle down. His father died in 1809 leaving him financially independent. In 1811, Cooper married Susan De Lancy. For ten years, he dabbled in different careers such as agriculture, politics, the American Bible Society, and the Westchester militia, with no permanent success.
In 1820, Cooper published his first fiction Precaution. He published it on a dare from his wife. Cooper said he could write a better fiction than Jane Austen’s novels of English gentry manners. Today, Precaution is mainly used as a document of American colonialism.

James Cooper, between 1822 and 1826, lived in New York City. There he was involved in intellectual life. He founded the Bread and Cheese Club which included poets, a painter, inventor, and Federalist judge. These men were active in both cultural and political affairs.
In the last ten years of his life, profits from his books so diminished that he gained little benefit his popularity. Cooper wrote romance, political satire, and the History of the Navy of the United States of America (1839). His political optimism had largely given way to calm Christian faith, though he never lost concern for the state of his country. He was considered America’s “national novelist” by the time of his death, September 14, 1851, one day before his birthday.

Living from 1936 to 2002, Ambrose published many great historical works. Perhaps his greatest work was finished months before he passed away, as he finished writing one of his last books, To America: Personal Reflections of an Historian. This book was his final goodbye to the country he so dearly loved. The topics he covers in this book range from the beginning of the Founding Fathers to World War Two to the turn of the millennium. Throughout his life, he was always fascinated with militaries and war. This book reflects his perspective on matters regarding the history of America and one message he portrays was his fascination with war, the military, and the men who lead or served in battle, such as Dwight Eisenhower. This also exposes Ambrose’s great patriotism for his country. He portrays his messages by using many descriptive adjectives and an upbeat style of speech as well writing about achievements he has done throughout his life, for instance launching a museum in commemoration for World War Two veterans. Ambrose was also very influenced by historical and biographical factors such as his Father, the period in which he grew up in, and of American figures.

Within the genre of the frontier novel, great consideration is given to early American ideals of masculinity. According to Aiping Zhang, in his article "The Negotiation of Manhood: James Fenimore Cooper's Ideology of Manhood in The Last of the Mohicans," James Fenimore Cooper was exceedingly interested in developing a new American definition of the ideal man. Zhang writes that "masculinity was always one of the primary issues in [Cooper's] life and his writings as well . . . the selection . . . of (the) male figures in The Last of the Mohicans must have a lot to do with his personal search for the ideal image of American man'' (2). With the realization that his writings could promote a new definition of the ideal American man, Cooper presented the male characters in The Last of the Mohicans as either well-suited or ill-fitted for frontier life, which Cooper metaphorically substitutes for early America.

In William Cooper’s Town: Power and Persuasion on the Frontier of the Early American Republic Alan Taylor argues that the American Revolution was a war that affected many settlements in social and political ways. The expansion of the United States caused many Americans to question the beliefs from the colonial past, and this would cause a shift in the present social order. Various new settlements brought about many struggles over distribution of property and political offices. All of the struggles were the key to define the social disorder that occurred during the post Revolutionary War time period. Taylor proved his thesis valid by using the life of William Cooper. Taylor used Cooper joining the Library
Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland is a novel that was written as a reaction to the author’s thoughts and observations of the political climate of the time, says Emory Elliot in his introduction to the work. He also notes that Brown asserted “the nation’s leaders were the ones who most needed to read fiction because the best novels most effectively portray the realities of the human condition” and that “serious novels would challenge the most intelligent readers and demand their full intellectual engagement and reflection” (Elliot, ix). This was in opposition to the general consensus that novel reading was “an idle and even dangerous pastime” (Elliot, ix). Brown’s goal in writing novels was to develop a literary style that was clearly “’American’” (Elliot, x). In this way, Brown’s illustration of a relationship between perception and knowledge exists not only within his novel, but can be extended to the climate of the day and represent a genre that is wholly ‘American’.
