Philosophy of Education
Education is an ever-changing profession where the recognition of purpose, motivation and the philosophy of education styles are essential to the teaching of children. In this paper, I will discuss beliefs on the purpose of education (Biesta, 2009), the philosophies of Rousseau, Pestalozzi, and Froebel (Moore, 2002), my motivations and their importance (Schiefele, 2017), and plan for teaching in the future. While my ideas may change as my education continues, these are my beliefs at this point in my journey.
Purpose of Education
C.S. Lewis said, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” Every person is being educated throughout their whole life. The purpose of education has been a debated topic throughout the time that it has been a formal part of children’s lives. Some believe that the purpose is purely to prepare the workforces that are upcoming in the world. C.S. The educational system is meant to create students who are prepared for the careers that they will eventually have, while also forming them into socialized people who can function as a part of the society that makes up our world. The aforementioned belief that the formation of “holistic” people is being prevented is not as accurate as some may believe. This part of the curriculum in schools is simply underlying and not the complete focus of the day. Educators are leading by example and aiding students in their socialization; this allows students to learn to be good people based on those actions and words that are seen modeled by the teacher throughout their classroom time. In the beginning, there were basic schoolhouses to fulfill the needs of a newly industrialized society. The subjects taught had the sole aim of the student being able to secure a job with the ultimate goal of creating a large enough workforce to fill the new societal needs, creating a stigmatization that any subject that does not help to secure a job is useless. What is the purpose of education? A question that has been asked for centuries and defined in many ways; each theorist will argue their views on education is unsurpassed, yet it remains a question, that the future of our children depends upon. My personal philosophy of education is to create an environment that allows every child the freedom and ability to discover, create and pursue their interests; ultimately becoming the best they can, for an evolving and unpredictable future. Within this framework, the purpose being to encourage learning through children’s interests, by personalising education for the individual and interlacing subjects to engage and entice learning. While discussing my personal philosophy of education, I will explain the aim of education, consider the role of the teacher and the learner and present effective teaching methods and practices for within the classroom. This essay will demonstrate that Dewey, Friedman, Neill, Noddings, Robinson, and Zhao, support my personal philosophy and prove in contrast with the theories of Skinner and Rousseau.
Education has always been in existence in one form or another. As each child is born into this world regardless of who or where they are born, life lessons immediately begin. He/she will learn to crawl, walk, and talk by the example and encouragement of others. Although these lessons are basic in the beginning they evolve as the child grows. However, the core learning method of a child does not change. Learning from others, they will watch, listen, and then act for themselves. Thomas Jefferson believed that an education would lead men and women to the ability to be self-governed and become positive contributors to society (Mondale & Patton, 2001). Today, we can see how true this is by the examples of others. Those that are given the opportunity for education are more likely to find jobs and develop skills that not only improve a community, but influence the economic growth of their nation (Ravitch, Cortese, West, Carmichael, Andere, & Munson, 2009, p. 13). On the other hand, if an education is not provided to individuals, they can become a hindrance to that nation’s growth.
Throughout many years, education has played an important role in improving our minds and society. However, what many people tend to forget is that our education is not at the best it can be. Education is defined as receiving or giving systematic instruction, especially at a school or university. Many people today questions whether or not our education depends on the people teaching it or if it’s the student’s responsibility to want to learn. "To what extent do our schools serve the goals of a true education?" Education helps people learn new things, but it can be changed. Although education helps students learn and plan for the future, it can be improved to help benefit students ahead of time.
I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. The purpose of education is a topic that is very contradictive, it’s talked about all the time, but the ones receiving the education aren’t supposed to question it and just accept the knowledge that is being given to them. Education is the foundation of life, it helps prepare us to get jobs, it helps us earn money to maintain sustainability and pay for the necessities that we need.
