Introduction What is the purpose of education? A question that has been asked for centuries and defined in many ways; each theorist will argue their views on education is unsurpassed, yet it remains a question, that the future of our children depends upon. My personal philosophy of education is to create an environment that allows every child the freedom and ability to discover, create and pursue their interests; ultimately becoming the best they can, for an evolving and unpredictable future. Within this framework, the purpose being to encourage learning through children’s interests, by personalising education for the individual and interlacing subjects to engage and entice learning. While discussing my personal philosophy of education, I will explain the aim of education, consider the role of the teacher and the learner and present effective teaching methods and practices for within the classroom. This essay will demonstrate that Dewey, Friedman, Neill, Noddings, Robinson, and Zhao, support my personal philosophy and prove in contrast with the theories of Skinner and Rousseau. Skinner’s approach to education did not account for all styles of learning as he disregarded the activities of the mind. Although his reinforcement methods may work with some students, this approach does not work for all, and this is why I believe in taking a learner-centred approach to education, as it can cater all learning styles. Each child brings unique learning preferences, and strategies need to be used to cater to their needs. Dewey believed, students learn best by doing through hands on experience, catering to the kinesthetic learners. Dewey had a holistic child in mind as he developed his theory. Dewey encouraged teachers to involve students within their learning environment (Webb, Metha, Jordan 2013). Dewey wanted each child to learn through experiential means. This meant the task at hand for teachers was to change their teaching methods and to encourage their students to play a part in their learning. This changed education by allowing students to ask questions and to learn by trying direct experiences. John Dewey wanted teachers to take on a whole new thinking process when approaching education in their classrooms. This approach was meant to get rid of the scientific approach and to embrace a new child-centered approach (Schrag 2009). Despite their differences E.D. Hirsch and John Dewey’s ideas on curriculum and pedagogy continue to be reflected on and both have contributed largely towards our educational curriculum in this present day. While both views carried strengths and weaknesses, I believe that Dewey’s applied learning approach would prove to be more beneficial in the long term. Being tailored towards the students’ needs and learning, this creates intrinsic motivation – the need to know. Moreover, Dewey’s research now has major influence on Modern education in that collaborative learning; authentic learning tasks and inquiry-based learning are all incorporated in our classrooms today. Although, Hirsch’s presented us with many valid ideas in his core curriculum, I believe that a more combined approach with Dewey’s would be a lot more significantly valuable.
Dewey argued that education would be most effective and children would learn best when they involved in school activities that interacted with their environments. He believed that a teacher should not be in the classroom to act simply as instructors, but they should have more authority create methods or roles that engage students to discover their abilities to learn independently. He believed that teacher should give students the opportunities to learn and discover from the activities they involved in. Dewey also believed that education should be focusing on linking students’ present content to previous experiences and knowledge. Dewey focuses on the cooperation between a group of students focusing on the need and experience of each child.
Dewey is often misrepresented and wrongly associated with child-centered education. The curriculum traditions that have dominated north America and UK schooling over the last century cannot be easily slotted into any of Dewey’s work. Dewey believed that human beings learn through a hands-on approach. He also believed the teacher should observe the interest of the students, observe the directions they naturally take, and then serve as someone who helps develop problem-solving skills. This made Dewey’s view of the classroom more realistic, which promoted equal voice among all participants in the learning experience. Dewey believed in interdisplinary curriculum, or a curriculum that focuses on connecting multiple subjects, where students are allowed to freely move in and out of classrooms as they pursue their interests and construct their own paths for acquiring and applying knowledge. Dewey described an image as “an anticipatory sensation,” a phrase in which sensation points to a classic understanding of image as our senses and anticipatory refers to an enlarged understanding of the image as an on-going experience (Russell. 1998). Dewey saw reflective thinking as part of the historical development of the social mind and the life process of an individual human. This was Dewey’s belief during the period of his life, during the years he worked with teachers, children, and parents at Chicago Elementary School. Dewey later went to work in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago, which included teaching courses in pedagogy (the art, science of teaching as a profession). During this an elementary school that served as a kind of laboratory where teachers could conduct experiments in curriculum development. As a child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said that I wanted to do something to help other people. I realized that even though teachers do not get a lot of respect, or money, they have the greatest job anyone could ever hope for. They help children become adults. All children are inspired by someone to be what they will become in the future. Teachers inspire those of all professions; police officers, firefighters, secretaries, carpenters, bankers, trash collectors, actors, truck drivers, fast food workers, scientists, inventors, doctors, lawyers, even the president. Imagine how it would feel to know that you are the reason someone developed something to benefit mankind, saved a life, or became the first female president of the United States of America. Hopefully, as a teacher I can inspire a child to fulfill all of their dreams.
In the first chapter, Dewey draws attention to a conflict in educational theory, between traditional and progressive education. He conceives of traditional education as a system that has that encourages student attitudes of ‘docility, receptivity, and obedience’ (Dewey, p. 3). He considers the task given educators in traditional education to communicate knowledge and skills, and enforce rules of conduct for the next generation. He considers progressive education a system that critiques traditional education for imposing controls and limiting active participation by students in developing subject matter. Progressive education gives learners ‘growth’, freedom of expression and activity. Dewey sees the strengths of progressive education contributing helpfully to an experience of education (p. 20).
Becoming a teacher is going to be one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. Teaching was never a childhood dream for me like it was with others. Some people have always known that they wanted to become some type of teacher, but I never decided to until I entered college. I’ve always loved being around children and it makes me feel great to be able to help someone, so becoming a teacher is the perfect career choice for me.
Relating my reasons for becoming a teacher was not a very difficult task for me; to accomplish this task I simply needed to reflect upon and describe some of my own personal experiences. I relied basically upon my memories and thoughts about my own educational experiences. However, describing my philosophy of education was much more difficult task for me to accomplish. First of all, before I could properly describe my philosophy, I realized I needed a working definition of the concept of philosophy. My search for this working definition of the term philosophy led to further research which provided further insight into viewpoints of various well-known philosophers; some of whom we discussed in class.

Education is a very important aspect of our lives. It is our education that makes us who we are and determines what we become. Therefore, education is not something to be taken lightly. As a teacher, my goal will be to provide the best possible education for my students. Every student is unique. I must see students for who they are individually and respect their ideas and opinions. Each student has a different learning style. I must take this into consideration because I want to provide a constructive learning opportunity for every student. I believe that every student has the potential to learn.
I would not be considered your typical college student in search of an education degree. I am a 31 year old male, married, with two children, and working on my second career. My previous life consisted of working in the coal mines till I was injured. My injury, however, is considered a blessing in disguise. My injury has leaded me to the world of education.
I believe that education should be looked as as a desire to acquire all possible knowledge, not as a requirement or something that can be formally examined by standardized tests. There are numerous ways that children learn and I want to be able to encourage as much learning as possible for each child. I believe that using many methods of instruction is the most effective way of teaching to these various ways of learning. These methods include group work, hands-on activities, buddy work, etc. Assessment of children should follow the same idea. When children get the chance to perform on different assessments, they can adequately show their strengths and weaknesses. I do not wish to rely on tests only to assess the students in my class. Some types of assessment that I think should be inlcuded in a classroom are journals, presentations, projects and interviews. I also think that the classroom should be run with the help of the children. By distributing jobs among the children and everyone participating in the classroom, the students will form a sense of togetherness. This will eventually create a community within the classroom. I feel that this community of learners is essential for the students to perform effectively and efficiently. They will feel comfortable in the environment and will not be afraid to take risks or ask questions. The teacher will also be a member of this community and will not be seen as unapproachable or as the only leader.
This quote, “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.” This should be used in every classroom. Especially since students have a better understanding when they do things for themselves. John Dewey was a famous supporter of experimental education. He voiced his ideas about “curriculum theory in the context of historical debates about school organization and the need to have experience as central in the educational process.” Teacher should try to make all content experimental and hands on. Dewey also stated that an “educator must take into account the unique differences between each student. Each person is different genetically and in terms of past experiences. Even when a standard curricula is presented using established pedagogical methods, each student will have a different quality of experience. Thus, teaching and curriculum must be designed in ways that allow for such individual differences.” This is another reason that makes experimental education important. A teacher should be willing to “experiment” to see which teaching and curriculum methods work best for the individual
The purpose of education is to teach the basics of knowledge and to challenge each individual to learn. The realization that I will have the power to make a difference in a child’s life is sometimes overwhelming. This remarkable fact gives me a stronger purpose – to be a positive role model for my students. Being an effective teacher is truly an awesome responsibility.
