Today bullying is still a major issue; over 3.2 million students are bullied each year and an average of 9 out of 10 LGBT kids say they been bullied. Many of these victims are afraid to ask for or are refused help from their schools and school districts. However, that does not mean nothing can be done to help bullied individuals, even just one person taking a stand against bullying can make a huge difference and if there is anything everyone can agree upon it is that no one wants to be bullied. In the scenario that depicts bullying on a school campus, my responsibility is to properly use my freedoms, yet, the question remains: what does this entail? To witness bullying take place and to choose to ignore it, is to misuse my freedom just as much as the bullies chose to misuse theirs.
In her article “How the Internet Has Changed Bullying”, Maria Konnikova explained how bullying has reached technology, and in the workplaces of many adults. The Internet has made it harder to escape from bullying, and easier for bullies to escape from confronting their victims. Furthermore, the author stresses that cyberbullying not only targets high schoolers, but it’s affecting the lives of college students as well (Konnikova 1). Cyberbullying takes place in the Internet world where is easier for a bully to gossip and humiliate multiple of victims in a faster pace. The studies have shown that cyberbullying is making a greater impact in the victims’ and the bullies’ lives more than the traditional bullying and many people are not aware of it; therefore the schools, witnesses, and employers should work together to fight against cyberbullying and provide help to the victims and bullies.
Not only is it already hard to be a teenager, but having to deal with constant teasing and harassment is just something no one needs. There is a point in life where bullying can become so terrifying that students will rather stay at home than have to face their bully. Darnell “Dynasty” Young is a 17 year old gay teen who has gone through every possible way to stop his bullies from harassing him. His mother has tried everything but hasn’t been able to put a stop to it. Until one day, Young’s mother bought Darnell a stun gun. His mother told him to bring it to school and when the bullies began to torment him to take it out. He did just that, he did not actually shoot anyone he just waved it up in the air to intimidate his bullies. He not only got suspended but he also got arrested, yet the six boys teasing him and calling him names received no punishment whatsoever. (CNN) Young is one of the many kids that go through this type of abuse in a place where they should feel safe. This is an example of the school failing to do anything to prevent this kind of behavior, even after the parents try to intervene. This is also a great example of parents failing to implement high behavior standards by enforcing them to retaliate. Parents should be there to advice a peaceful way of resolving this in a non violent way not give them the weapon. By implementing prevention programs such as activities that help fight bullying can ultimately lead to the end of this horrific thing some kids face each day.
School is a place where you can learn, fraternize and feel safe. Well sometimes children and young adults do not feel that way at all, some kids have to deal with being physically harassed at school. Nowadays the bullying isn’t just occurring at school, it’s also occurring online in the privacy of their own home. The Internet is the main contributor because now kids go on social networks and blog sites, which, is one of their main forms of communication because they are apart of the computer age. Scott Meech’s article “Cyber-bullying Is Worse than Physical Bullying” and Amanda Lenhart’s article “Cyber-bullying Is Not Worse than Physical Bullying” both discuss why they believe one form of bullying is worse than the other. Although both articles illustrate their point of views by using different tactics, Meech does by far a better job because he focuses on a few concrete facts whereas Lenhart bombards the reader with statistics and irrelevant points.
When parents and teacher understand the potential cause of why bullies decide to bully. They can make the decision to show their children that bullying isn 't right and could help to prevent bullying in the future. Studies show that “Over 77 percent of students have been bullied” ( No bullying.com).Before explaining why people bully, defining what a bully is, would be a helpful tool to know what bullying is. Bullying could be considered as purposefully taking control over someone through verbal abuse and physical abuse. Most verbal abuse starts with teasing or threats. Another type of abuse could be with such violence “Use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants” (The free dictionary).

"The school," says Dan Olweus, "has a responsibility to stop bullying behavior and create a safe learning environment for all students." There are a number of stakeholders impacted when one kid harasses another child or teenager. The first stakeholder is, of course, are bullied students. Bullied kids often start to feel disconnected and learn to dislike school. They may even disconnect from friends, fail at school, and not want to go back. Students who usually excel academically may even fail. In extreme cases, tormented students even have thoughts of suicide. The second stakeholder that is affected by bullying is the parents themselves. The parents are affected because they are afraid to send their frightened kids to school, and even their victims’ home life is changed. Parents feel compelled to confront the school principal about what he or she can do to stop this from happening again. Parental action brings in another stakeholder: the school administration. Teachers and school staff are affected because they are required to create and maintain a safe student environment. This stakeholder group must train teachers and staff on any past and new school policies on bullying, as well as the proper way to create a safe and respectful classroom environment.
I will then consider arguments that are either for or against bullying, as well as arguments about the results of bullying. These arguments include how bullying is not really an issue and it is just overprotective parents, how bullying is a matter that is serious to children and should be taken care of worldwide, as well as the argument of how bullying has long-lasting effects on children when they grow up. By addressing the arguments of how bullying is not an issue, I will be able to effectively argue that bullying should be eradicated on bullying, and that schools should buckles down on the issue. When bullying is a criminal offense, students are going to think twice before acting. Lynne Shallcross, a web producer for Kaiser Health News, explained that anti-bullying laws can help reduce bullying, both in real life and online. Anti-bullying laws are effective when they include three main components: “having a description of where and when the school has the authority to take action against bullying; having a clear definition of what constitutes bullying; and having a requirement that schools develop and implement their own local policies, possibly on a timeline” (Lynne Shallcross). These three components are effective because they give bullying a clear definition, explain when and where the school has the authority to do something, and requires schools to develop and implement their own policies. Requiring schools to create and implement their own polices forces schools to see bullying as a problem that needs to be addressed.
“Many adolescents are taught not to discriminate or intimidate. However, bullying has increased dramatically in the present era. Victims are left physically, mentally, verbally, and emotionally broken. Also, many children are taking their lives due to not being able to handle the misery from bullying. As a result of these incidents, he or she are left wondering who is at fault, the child or the parents. Therefore, should parents be held accountable for the outcome of their children’s bullying? Parents should be held accountable if their child is a bully. When an adult decides to be a parent, they become responsible for whatever mistakes their child may do, until the child becomes an adult. Therefore, it is up to the parent to know what their child is doing at all times. The parent should show their child right from wrong, and as parents, he or she must remember, children repeat what one may say and do. If parents do not provide their child with these resources, they should be fined or even put in jail. Also, their should be a law passed that requires parents, to go to a parent-child orientation, which will provide parents with resources on how to deal with bullying.
Bullying does not have a standard definition. Bullying can be anything from calling someone else names, beating them up just for the fun of it, to texting or messaging them on the internet or any mobile device. Any person can be the victim of bullying, not just children. Bullying causes many issues, physically, emotionally, and mentally, not only for the victim, but for their entire families as well. Bullies have many different reasons as to why they start bullying someone else. The actions done to the victim leaves them with only a few options on how to stop being bullied. How they handle it is always different.
