An ethical dilemma/challenge related to children that I have considered is bullying. Bullying is when you see a group of children tease, pick on or make fun of one child at school or anywhere. For example, a kid who is being bully everyday at school due to the fact she or he has a disability, a funny smell or is obese. This dilemma can be resolved by helping kids to understand bullying, keeping the lines of communication open, encourage kids to do what they love, and model how to treat others with kindness and respect. If I were in this kind of situation, the role that I would play is to help kids understand bullying, be a trusted adult for the child to talk about their situation, and distract their mind away from suicide thoughts. One example of bullycide would be Jon Carmichael from Texas who was bullied so harshly that “one day they stripped him naked, tied him up, and stuck him in a trash can, and they taped it with their cell phones and put it all on You Tube” per his mother’s account (Texas Monthly, Hollandsworth). A few days later Jon was found hanging by a rafter from their barn after committing suicide. The perpetrators of this abuse were his fellow classmates and it is reported that “60% of boys who bullied others in middle school had at least one criminal conviction by the age of 24; 40% had three or more convictions” (van der Valk, 41). It is also important to know that these unwanted and aggressive behaviors which can get ugly really quickly. Bullying has become a wide epidemic that is affecting many people around the world. It is important to know that bullying has been going on for a very long time. It is a major problem among elementary school children, middle school children, high school children and sad to say that it is now a major problem in the workplace. Not only is it already hard to be a teenager, but having to deal with constant teasing and harassment is just something no one needs. There is a point in life where bullying can become so terrifying that students will rather stay at home than have to face their bully. Darnell “Dynasty” Young is a 17 year old gay teen who has gone through every possible way to stop his bullies from harassing him. His mother has tried everything but hasn’t been able to put a stop to it. Until one day, Young’s mother bought Darnell a stun gun. His mother told him to bring it to school and when the bullies began to torment him to take it out. He did just that, he did not actually shoot anyone he just waved it up in the air to intimidate his bullies. He not only got suspended but he also got arrested, yet the six boys teasing him and calling him names received no punishment whatsoever. (CNN) Young is one of the many kids that go through this type of abuse in a place where they should feel safe. This is an example of the school failing to do anything to prevent this kind of behavior, even after the parents try to intervene. This is also a great example of parents failing to implement high behavior standards by enforcing them to retaliate. Parents should be there to advice a peaceful way of resolving this in a non violent way not give them the weapon. By implementing prevention programs such as activities that help fight bullying can ultimately lead to the end of this horrific thing some kids face each day.
Everyone has been bullied or encountered someone being bullied at some point of their life. Whether it would be physically or verbally both can be exceedingly traumatizing and can have a long-term psychological influence on children’s development. Majority people may define bullying in a more physical term; nevertheless that’s not always the case. The act of bullying can occur in several ways and in reality affect the individual in the same way. Bullying is generally defined as repeated, negative, and harmful actions focused at target throughout a course of time, exhibiting a sense of power difference between the bully and the victim (Olweus, 1993; Limber & Mihalic, 1999 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). A survey was conducted in the United States estimating that over six million children, about 30% in grade six through ten have experienced frequent bullying in a school environment (Nansel, 2001 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005). Many people might debate that bullying is something that every child goes through and is simply a part of growing up, although there are several damaging consequences that happens to the child’s brain. Bullying causes the child to feel upset, isolated, frightened, anxious, and depressed. They feel like they reason they are being picked on is because there is something wrong with them and may even lose their confidence feel unsafe going to school (Frenette, 2013 as cited from Douglas J. Boyle, 2005) Anthropologically, sociologically, or psychologically, bullying can be analyzed through different perspectives and several questions can be asked based on the topic:
Harassment and bullying are two of the most difficult challenges to overcome in any organization. At schools, a peaceful, safe, all-inclusive learning environment must be created and kept to achieve the student learning. However, schools are mirrors of the society in which they stand. Administrators should lead the way, by establishing a zero-tolerance policy against both unfair practices: harassment and bullying. Likewise, to limit, or in a utopia, eliminate all forms of harassment or bullying, it is not only the creation of the policies, but the spread of awareness about the issue and the enforcement of students’ code of conduct what will get results.

Bullying, as a whole has different effects on everybody. Everyone that is exposed to it is effected weather it is physical, biological, psychological, emotional, cognitive, or social. “The definition contains several components that identify a situation as bullying including when harm is done, an unfair match exists, and the actions are repeated over time.” All three components are seen in most if not all school settings. Within the past decade, school violence has developed rapidly and children and adolescents seem particularly vulnerable to trauma, due to bullying in school (Carney). Situation A for example, A student is a homosexual, was home schooled until this year. The student now enters a public school, gets picked on for the way that they are living their life. It goes on for a long period of time and then one day it goes a step further and the bullies are now cyber bullying this student with social media. This student has had enough, it starts with dropping out of school, then as the social media bullying continues the student decides to cut themselves, until suicide now becomes the answer. The problem starts with bullying not being stopped when it is first noticed. The problem then ends with the question, can bullying really cause that amount of much damage?

The National Center for Educational Statistics, in 2009, said nearly 1 in 3 students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied in school. Educators attempt to provide safe, nurturing environments where students can thrive. Any disturbance to this climate can have negative affects on students’ educational performances. Bullying is one such disruption. Unfortunately, physical and verbal abuse are nothing new in the school setting, however, the rise of technology in our country has created a new setting for bullies to target their victims. Cyberbulling, or the use of any number of technological means to harm or harass another, has become an increasingly prevalent occurrence, specifically among school-aged children (Campfield, 2006).

It has negative consequences for both their mental and physical health, immediately and in their futures. Governments, schools, teachers and parents have an obligation to work collaboratively to ensure that children's rights are upheld. There needs to be progressive change towards resourcing our schools with the tools to help prevent and respond to bullying. Equal rights between adults and children is questionable, the power imbalance that is created has a significant negative impact on a child's right to be free from harm and their right to participate in school. Moreover, as a society we have a moral obligation to reflect on the social pressures we are creating, that our children have to face.
According to a recent study noted on bullyingstatistics.org, about one in every ten student’s drops out or changes schools as a result of repeated bullying. Suicide is one of the leading causes of death of children under age 14. More than half these cases are a result of bullying. We’ve all experienced bullying in some shape or form. Bullying does not have a standard definition. Bullying can be anything from calling someone else names, beating them up just for the fun of it, to texting or messaging them on the internet or any mobile device. Any person can be the victim of bullying, not just children. Bullying causes many issues, physically, emotionally, and mentally, not only for the victim, but for their entire families as well. Bullies have many different reasons as to why they start bullying someone else. The actions done to the victim leaves them with only a few options on how to stop being bullied. How they handle it is always different.
Bullying against teens is still happening even though there are various awareness programs to try to prevent it. I want to create awareness of bullying against teens of all religions, race, and sexual orientation. Even with the various attention to bullying, the problem still persists despite the school providing awareness, students are still afraid to say anything. Societal patterns today make bullying a difficult issue to eliminate. Starting in 2007, a total of 35 states made laws to go against bullying at school. These laws consisted of a clear definition of bullying, and how schools will be required to enforce uniform standards of conduct. The reason bullying comes as such an issue to me is because I actually know friends that have been suicidal and have caused themselves harm due to being bullied every day, in school and at home.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” These words have been repeated countless times, but they are not accurate. In truth, words can kill. Bullying has become a highlighted problem within our society, and bullying in the school systems is even more prominent. According to the news, there are countless cases of bullying, many of which do not have happy endings. The rates of suicide due to bullying are currently higher than they have ever been before. Suicide is the third top causes of death in young people within the United States, averaging at 4,400 deaths a year, with over 50% of these deaths as a result of some sort of bullying. Studies also show that there are 100 suicide attempts for every one successful suicide performed (“Bullying and Suicide”). These numbers are disturbingly high. Bullying is affecting more kids in ways that some adults may never understand. The fact that words and actions can lead to cutting and suicides is still a distant concept to some and needs to be brought to immediate attention. Laws are now being put into place to prevent these tragedies, but what is really being done to prevent them within the schools or even within the students’ homes? There is a lot of finger pointing when it comes to this topic. But we all want to know what the cause is behind this nationwide crisis and who is responsible for it.
