For my site visit, I decided to report on a Buddhist temple, I visited the Wat Buddharangsi Temple in Homestead, Florida. They are open every day and practice traditional Theravada Buddhism. The temple itself is composed of separate rooms for the monks, a Dharma hall (also known as Uposatha hall), a garden, a fountain, a food hall, and two classrooms. The monks at this temple pay direct homage to the Buddha, Siddhartha Gotama. At the center of the religion is the various teachings by the Buddha; monks at the temple hold lessons during the weekend on different teachings and scriptures. Buddhism first appeared in the west during the 1890s and made one of its first appearances in Miami in the 1970s. The meetings of this temple, the teachings, and the prayers of the temple serve the growing Buddhist population of Miami. This Buddhist population was, and still is, composed of both Asian immigrants and westerners who want to learn the basics of Buddhism. Wat Buddharangsi opened in 2003, after many expressed their desires for a sanctuary dedicated to Theravada Buddhism. The Marble Temple in Bangkok, Thailand helped Wat Buddharangsi further their abilities to teach …show more content…
Theravada is practiced at the Wat Buddharangsi temple and is considered more conservative. Originally, Theravada was practiced in countries like Thailand and Cambodia, while Mahayana is primarily located in Tibet and Central Asia. Many of Theravada scriptures that contain prayers are in Pali, the language of the Buddha. The Wat Buddharangsi temple focuses on the eight-fold path, the four noble truths, and the moral code. These three aspects of Buddhism are at the core of Theravada Buddhism. One of the purposes of practicing Buddhism is to become enlightened. To reach nirvana or enlightenment releases one from a cycle of Karma and Rebirth. Theravada Buddhism focuses on meditation, wisdom, and morality as they consider this the key to
...eautiful scenes within the temple. It was very interesting to learn about specific interactions and lifestyles many Buddhists go through when at the temple and their perspectives on life. The location of the temple was one that really provided an atmosphere that was heavenly. The architecture and the buildings were meticulously built. The landscape was very beautiful and the atmosphere was very relaxing. I felt at peace and calm when I was at the temple. I also feel a step closer to understanding my culture.
This is accomplished by examining Thailand’s Theravada Buddhism through several different analytical frameworks. First, Scott examines “discourses on wealth and piety” within “specific historical and cultural contexts” in order to demonstrate “the dynamic character of Buddhist renunciation” (17). Then she provides us with a history of the Dhammakaya temple ranging from its origins in the rising economy of Thailand to the Asian economic crisis of the late 1990s.
Buddhism teaches that humans have a repetitive cycle of birth, life, death, and rebirth. Each reincarnated life is decided into a better, worse, or a similar life, depending upon the person's Karma. The goal is to escape from this cycle and reach Nirvana, and once this is attained, the mind is free from suffering. Buddhism teaches a lesson through its followers in order to make them fully understand that one lives for a reason, which is to eliminate all their desires. Document 6 it quotes,
...in, I highly respect Buddhism and may incorporate some of the beliefs I was taught into my everyday life. I arrived at the temple only in order to complete a school assignment, but I left the temple knowing I will be returning. The incredibly welcoming monks in the temple mentioned that meditation takes time and practice to master, encouraging me to return and practice meditation in their religious hall as they give me lessons on how to improve my focus while meditating. The Wat Buddharangsi Temple is a place that I would recommend anyone to visit. The feeling of relaxation and peace is one that I would love to, and will enjoy, on more than one occasion, as it is now one of my favorite places to relax in.
In Buddhism, there are eight sacred sites that Buddhists can pilgrimage to, four of which are primarily visited. Each of the four corresponds to a point of significance in Buddha’s life. The first sacred site of pilgrimage is Lumbini, where,
In both Hindu and Buddhist philosophies, they follow and focus on similar yet different concepts of liberating themselves from ‘Samsara’ and the suffering that comes with it. Samsara in both Hindu and Buddhist philosophies is the endless cycle of death and rebirth. So, the end goal is to work towards the enlightenment from this cycle. Though the two concepts are similar in that the goal is the same, the two have distinctive and important differences on how they view this “release” from the rebirth-death cycle; they both follow different paths to reach that end goal which, in basic terms, is to live a happy life.
On Sunday, September 8, 2013, I visited the Wat Buddharangsi Buddhist temple of Miami in Homestead. Every Sunday, they present a meditation service in English for two hours from three to five in the afternoon. Once I parked, the place of ritual was conveniently located across the parking lot. There was a shoe rack outside of the temple. Before I came to this temple, I read the guidelines from their website. The requirements for new guests are to remove your shoes before entering inside. Therefore, when I saw the shoe rack, I was not in shock. I was relieved to see that the temple provided a neat spot to place shoes rather than having them scattered on the floor.
It is crucial for them to find the secret of enlightenment in the present world. For both the film, To The Land of Bliss and the book, The Sacred Quest, every Buddhist must do good deeds, believe in the dharma, and to understand life is temporary. Good deeds in life will give you good outcomes yet, wrongful actions will result in karma and can ruin anyone’s chances of attaining their goal. Buddhists must believe in the dharma which are simply the Buddha’s teachings. Life being temporary is true for everyone, in every religion. Buddhists interpret this differently because they understand life is temporary but have joy when someone passes. They must believe their soul is permanent and that it will live

Throughout the history of humankind, man has always searched to find answers to the many existential questions. Numerous different religions and denominations have developed around the world over time. Though, most wonder about the origin and purpose of our existence. Buddhism was founded on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama about 2,600 years ago in India. After he had experienced that everyone was subject to “birth, sickness, death, and old age”, he tried to find a way to break from the cycle of rebirth (Bloom).
Followers of Theravada Buddhism would say that their form of Buddhism is the far most traditional form of Buddhism today. Their beliefs start with the stories that follow The Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama’s life. He was believed to discover the path to enlightenment after
Buddha believed that by following the Eightfold Path, one could fulfill and find legitimacy in the Four Noble Truths, and reach Nirvana; the release from selfishness and pain. Like the Hindu, Buddha believed in reincarnation, a major factor in achieving Nirvana, as...
Buddhism is known for happiness. Happiness can be achieved by genuinely practicing meditation. Meditation is the central practice of Buddhism. Practicing Buddhism gives one a way of finding answers to deep questions about life and the nature of reality. “Who am I?” “Why am I here?” “What is the meaning of life?” “Why do we suffer?” and “How can I achieve lasting happiness?” As the Dalai Lama commented,
For my site visit reflection paper, I decided to visit the Thai Buddhist Temple in Homestead. The reason this particular site was my choice was because information acquired from the videos in lecture about tradition and Confucianism in Asia made me curious to learn more about the Buddhist way of life. Because so many South Eastern countries instantaneously adopted Buddhism from India and then China with open arms, I decided to make the visit in the morning to learn the reasons for the international success of this way of life. This would give me a more interactive comprehension of Buddhism.

From the life of Gautama to modern day Buddhist, it has always been steeped in rituals and following the teaching of the dharma. Knowing the truths and using that knowledge to follow the eightfold path is at the core of Buddhism. Knowing the different branches of Buddhism and there origins has given me a greater since of Buddhism around the world. Though reading the text over and over again I can say I have gained not only a greater knowledge but also an appreciation for those that choose to follow the teachings of Buddha.
