KFC, Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a chain of fast food restaurants specialized in fried chicken and is headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky in the United States. The company was founded by Harland Sanders and it is a subsidiary of Yum! Brands Company that also owns the Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurant chains.
In 1930, Sanders opened his first restaurant in a small room in a gas station in Corbin, Kentucky and called it “Sanders Court & Café”. He used to prepare the chicken in an iron skillet, which took about 30 minutes to do but in 1993, he started using the pressure fryer to reduce the cooking time and serve it to his customers faster. Years later, KFC franchise was opened in Utah in 1952. By the mid-1960s, KFC became one of the first fast food companies to expand on an international level in all of England, Mexico and Jamaica leading England to be the very first KFC overseas outlet in the world. In 1964, Sanders sold the entire KFC franchising operation and since that time, the chain has been sold three more times: to Heublein in 1971, to R.J. Reynolds in 1982 and most recently to PepsiCo in 1986.
KFC is known for its slogan “Finger lickin’ good” that has later been replaced by “Nobody does chicken like KFC “and “So Good “.
KFC’s original product is pressure fried chicken pieces, seasoned with Sanders’ recipe of 11 herbs and spices. The constituents of this recipe represent a notable secret that only few people know about and which they signed strict confidentiality contracts to keep it a secret.KFC also offers grilled and roasted chicken products, side dishes and desserts. In 1946 two brothers, Ben and Truitt Cathy, opened a diner in Atlanta Georgia called the Dwarf House Grill. The Dwarf House served a variety of typical grill food that included everything from burgers to hot dogs. All of that changed in 1961 when a poultry supplier stopped buy and sold Mr. Cathy chicken breast that were too large for the trays that they typically cooked the chicken on. Truitt Cathy decided that he did not want to throw out the chicken so he breaded the chicken and put it in the pressure fryer. He realized that he could cook the chicken in the same amount of time that it took to cook a hamburger and it tasted great. He had hamburger buns and pickles in the restaurant already and this is how the first chicken sandwich was made. In 1967 the first Chick-Fil-A store was opened in Atlanta’s Greenbrier Shopping Center and in 1986 the first freestanding franchise was opened. As a kid, I remember asking my parents “How does Amazon do this?” and I remember them saying that I will need to major in a topic that will help me understand this process. Every time I ordered an item from them, I would think about the process of obtaining the packages using robots, packing the items safely, and then shipping them off to customers. This is an example of logistics and efficiency at its finest. As a junior, I still do not understand this process fully, since I am currently taking IDIS 240.

With the racks dispersed out from one end of the facility to another, it takes the shipping and receiving operator longer to unload the material than if the racks were placed in a more centralized area. For example, its area-dominance strategy of opening at least 50 to 60 stores in an area helps with marketing but also lowers the cost of replenishment. All manufacturing facilities are centralized to get the maximum benefit of capacity aggregation and also lower the inbound transportation cost from the manufacturer to the distribution center (DC). Seven-Eleven also requires all suppliers to deliver to the DC where products are sorted by temperature. This reduces the outbound transportation cost because of aggregation of deliveries across multiple suppliers. It also lowers the receiving cost.
