Imagine if a child you dearly loved stood waiting while people cast their bids on her. What would you do? Amos Fortune, a freed slave, faced this exact situation. Lois Burdoo and her five children lived in great poverty. After the tragic death of her husband, Moses Burdoo, she struggled to provide her children’s daily needs. Eventually, she became unable to care for her oldest two children, Polly and Moses, and sadly put them up to vendue. Amos should have bought Polly because of three essential points: generosity embodied him, love inspired him, and poverty consumed her.
The Power of an Author Authors have the ability justify the worst actions. Authors have a way of romanticizing certain situations in order to convey a specific message. A good author has power to influence the reader into believing whatever it is the author wants. When it comes to the story of Hannah Dustan, authors such as John Greenleaf Whittier have romanticized her captivity story along with the actions she took throughout her journey. Introducing a character that will be seen in the story is one of the most vital parts when creating a piece of literature.
New Jack City, noted as ‘the crime film of the 90’s’,serves as an important episode for African-American people in America. Set in New York city, the film depicts the story of a success-driven antagonist Nino Brown (Wesley Snipes) who builds an empire powered by organized crime, drug trafficking, and Black delinquent young adults trapped in the cycle of crime. Ronald Reagan’s economic policy coupled with the popularity of crack-cocaine in the inner city creates inconsistencies and untapped markets in the poor community which Nino Brown brilliantly capitalizes on and exploits. His empire is able to successfully cut out the middle men in the drug trafficking market and centralize their operation in a single low-income housing complex inhabited
Acting of movie is very basic for todays standards. The actions of the Miles Bennell aren’t believable or logical. At some points the women of the movie tend of over action simple scenes. The rest of the cast is monotone and have little emotion. It ok casting, but they could of done better. You find yourself laughing at serious point in the film due to the poor acting. This movie could be recut to become a comedy movie, just based off their facial expression.
Reviews from abroad are more optimistic and supportive of the film. Critic Frederic Brussat of Spititualityandpractice state that “in the end, this slow moving and eccentric Norwegian movie turns into a drama about the adventure of the last stage of life”(Hammer). Alissa Simon of Variety refers to the film as “warm and gently humorous that should be appreciated worldwide” scoring the film 4 out of 5 stars (Simon). Although the film received good reviews it did not do as well as they expected in the box office. The film was ranked 55 on the week it was released making about $41,000.
The stunning premise is simply a young girl’s battle for survival against a brutal, retchless killer. Who, not for one second will let you take your eyes away from the screen. He stalks us, makes us feel the pain and not knowingly, he makes us scream for our life. It’s definitely not a setback, relax and enjoy kind of film but rather the opposite, in a good way. A bravura opening five minutes winds the tension up brillian...
One aspect of the film that the reviewers found to be positive was the plot. Scott states that “Kurt Sutter, torques this baby until it screams” (Scott par 4). This shows that the plot is filled with tiny twists and turns that ultimately make the movie a nail biter. The critic goes on to say “the plotting is somehow both flat footed and operatic in its absurdity”
Despite the fact that there are many, usually dramatic, films with leading actresses playing strong and powerful women, the majority of people these days seem to go more for light comedies and action as opposed to intense, powerful dramas. And this film is exactly that; it is both an action and comedy genre. The only difference between this and the majority of action-comedy films is that the main characters are female.
Depending on what type of sense of humor a viewer has, it might not sit well with everyone. There’s crotch shots sent through text when Rogen’s character accidentally switches phones with Mindy Kaling’s Sarah. There’s a ridiculous scene where Isaac, who is Jewish, is high on drugs that were provided to him by his expectant wife Betsy (that she bought off Craigslist, no less) attends a Catholic Midnight Mass with Betsy and her family. Chris hilariously and raunchily sleeps with a supposed fan in the bathroom of a bar. What ensues are a slew of 80’s and 90’s references, including Mackie exclaiming at one point, “She Home Alone’d me!” The film works for a nostalgic, older viewer. There is cameos left and right from Hollywood performers, including Miley, James Franco, and Tracy Morgan. I personally enjoyed the film. It’s enough to make you laugh yet give you that warm fuzzy feeling that are accustomed to holiday films. It’s not an Oscar-baiter by any means but Rogen, Mackie, and Gordon-Levitt certainly hold up their
Not all critics have been enamored with the film so far, David Nusair of Reel Film Reviews panning it as ‘tedious and unfunny virtually from start to finish’ while Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times awarded the film a lackluster review worthy of only two
Most reviewers overall enjoyed the movie very much. Christopher Null gave the movie four out of five stars and said it was “perfection and a good memorable film”. Steven Rhodes also says it is a good film “It's the sort of film that will leave you exhausted but glad you came.” (http://www.imdb.com/Reviews/210/21041) However from a woman’s point of view the film was barbaric and violent, “it's socially irresponsible and repellent in its graphic depictions of extreme violence and brutality,” says Susan Granger. (http://www.speakers-podium.com/susangranger.) I, however, even though I am a female I enjoyed the film very much. It has become one of my favorite movies because I feel like I can relate to the topic very much because I wish I was just able to let go and do what I really want to do. Everyone has his or her own opinion of things so you should see the movie and see how you react to it.
The Importance of Being Earnest is a play written by Oscar Wilde during the Victorian era. It is a farcical comedy in which the main characters live and maintain a fictional persona to escape their responsibilities. To which Oscar Wilde uses secondary characters within the play such as Lady Bracknell to humorously make her the tool of the conflict and much of the satire. She is the first and foremost a symbol of Victorian earnests and the unhappiness it brings as a result. Lady Bracknell was specially designed to represent Wilde’s opinion of the upper Victorian class repressiveness and traditional negativity. Hence minor characters such as Lady Bracknell play essential roles as they help both the plot and support the themes with assistance
I like the film very much. I think its one of the best films I’ve seen ever. The comedy in the film is just my humour, and the action was okay.
