Holding open the door to a local coffee shop, she stepped in front of him to enter. “You want to know the God’s honest truth?”
“Word to the wise, Miss Draver, I’m only ever interested in the truth.”
“Just remember, you asked for it.”
Placing their orders, they watched their lattes being made, before cozying up in a nearby booth.
“Okay, shoot.”
Tilting her head sideways, she spoke. “I’ve always wanted to take one of those couples bread baking classes. You know where you learn to make fresh bread together. Something about the pouring, mixing, and working together on a common goal feels right to me.”
“I’ll make you a deal. If I take the bread making classes, you agree to have a picnic in the park with me using the very same bread.”

For the first time in forever, she began to dream of the possibility of having something genuine with a man. “It might take a few weeks to find a class with an opening.”
“I’ve got something you might like. My brother and I used to load up in the morning and drive for two or three hours. We’d drink coffee, talk about everything under the sun and just get ourselves intentionally lost. Then we’d stop at a convenience store, load up on junk food, buy a map and chart our way back home. It was the ultimate guilty pleasure. You game for some real face-to-face time?”

“Sure, you big competitive weirdo.”
Laughing he replied cordially. “A lot of guys wouldn’t consider that a compliment. I, on the other hand, wear my strangeness like a cape of valor.”
“There’s something extremely wrong going on with you, but in the best kind of way.” Frowning at the strange turn of a phrase, she tried to back pedal. “I honestly didn’t mean that in the way it came out.”
Cupping his hands gently over hers he smiled. “I know exactly what you meant and it’s the best compliment a woman has ever given me.”
Letting out a relieved breath, she stared into his eyes. “Jesus. Warming up to you so easy, it’s blowing my mind.”
“Most women are running for the hills about now, so I’m already thinking of you a potential keeper.”
