The landscape in Madonna with Chancellor Rolin (1436) (pl. 1) shows Van Eyck’s exquisite eye for detail. The battlements of the palace suggest that it is a fortress, built of the edge of an escarpment. The background is a perfectly formed Medieval city divided by river (pl. 2). Symbolically, the Virgin is seated on the grandiose side of town. On the right hand side there are Gothic buildings, and a cathedral which city dwellers are flocking to, suggesting a mass pilgrimage of faith to the Virgin. The accuracy of the background city have led to many attempts to identify it, with connotations of Bruges. However, it is most like...

There is no arguing Walt Disney practiced what he preached. In fact, he did what he did so well that people continue to bring others to see what he did to this day, that being Disneyland. First, we’ll start by learning about the background history of Disneyland. Next, we’ll compare Disneyland from when it first started to what it has developed into. And finally, we’ll explore all the eight parks and what they have to offer.
Among the wall, there were multiple checkpoints. Checkpoints were open spaces that were under twenty-four hour surveillance by guards. The open spaces were used to grant access for officials and people that had special permission, to cross either side of the border. The most famous checkpoint is “Checkpoint Charlie.” This checkpoint became a symbol of the Cold war and it has been shown in movies and books. This is the checkpoint that allied personnels used to go in and out of either side of Berlin. The concrete wall kept out most people, but not all. During the twenty-eight years that the wall stood, approximately five thousand people made it across the border. Most people crossed the first version of the wall by throwing a rope over the top

The most visible aspect of the Cold War was the Berlin Wall. Before the wall was constructed, East and West Germans could travel freely between the two states. The number of East Germans fleeing to West was an embarrassment to the Communists, and something had to be done to pro...

Düsseldorf; a former fishing village at the mouth of the idyllic River Düssel, which flows into the enormous Rhine River, was our first destination, where we planned to spend a few days exploring the wondrous Altsadt (Old Town) borough, home to several of the city’s most beautiful churches. The oldest, Sankt Lambertus Basilica, built in the 13th century with it’s twisting spire made the Düsseldorf's skyline unique. As we approached the town, Mom; an avid window shopper, was fervent to see the promenade along the river banks lined with shops and cafés, it looked like a giant open air terrace. Uncle Noke took excellent care of us, making sure that we had the best experience possible and this picture-perfect riverside location was a sensational introduction to the rest of our family
The family is the traditional center of Polish life and plays a vital role in society. Extended families and even close friends will be there to help if there is ever a situation where an individual or family is not able to be self-sufficient. Parents typically are supportive of their children until they are grown and self-sufficient and children are expected to care for aging parents and grandparents. The Roman Catholic Church is a dominant force in the life of a Pole and during the 1980s, the presence of Polish Pope John Paul II was a significant influence in the Solidarity movement there. Common foods eaten are breads, noodles, dumplings (pierogi), potatoes, cabbage, beets, cucumbers, mushrooms, carrots, pork, beef, ham, and sausage (“Poland”, n.d.). Boiled potatoes are the most common side dish eaten with fish or meat and the Poles are well known for their “seasoned cucumbers”, or dill pickles. Meats are eaten regularly and pork is typically in the form of a breaded cutlet served with thick sauce. Cabbage stuffed with ground meat and rice, smoked and pickled herring fish, and soups are also popular. Desserts are

Along with viewing the light show, I also visited the inside of the monument and took an escalator to the top.
Vienna, Austria is a museum in and of itself. This is a city where I breathed and absorbed the history and culture of the old world simply by standing on one of her streets. Every time I go through the file “Wien pictures”, every cell of my body screams of joy! Vienna holds a special place in my heart as a blend of our awe inspiring past, breathtaking present, and a shiny bright future. She is a city all at once complicated, romantic, classy, elegant, and bearing conspicuous notes of royalty. I love you Vienna!
