The movie I chose was “The Boys in the Boat” which tells the true story of a group of young men who enrolled to become a part of Washington’s Rowing Team. The story takes place during the height of the Great Depression in 1936, in which many Americans faced financial hardships. The protagonist, Joe Rantz, is a University student studying engineering at the University of Washington and he is finding it difficult to pay off his tuition fees. His best friend, Roger Morris, who faces a similar situation, finds a job ad on the school’s job board in regards to a rowing team, and the two friends enroll. That individual’s performance in accounting would most definitely be inferior to that of someone who has a passion for the subject. In my personal experience, I have observed similar situations. For example, when I was in high school, I found that I would perform worse in classes that I did not feel interested in as much, such as Physics and Accounting, in comparison to those that did intrigue me, such as English, Biology and History. In short, one would notice a difference in performance for a matter that someone is passionate about versus their performance in a matter that does not interest them as much, or at all. When one accomplishes and builds toward things that motivate them, you feel rewarded, thus giving a sense of fulfillment. The concept of passion circles right back to motivation, as our passions in this life are what also motivate us to become a better version of ourselves, to provide for the people we love.
