Life, itself, existing might not be enough to conquer boredom. The slow process of enlarging a hole by repetitive movements is called boring. This may be why things, that are slow and repetitive that don’t appear to be going anywhere, came to be described as the same word, these things are boring. Boredom, which means being temporarily uninterested in anything happening, has been found as far back as ancient Pompei. Boredom is a feeling we, as humans, don't like, and it happens to everyone. But now we have Facebook, Youtube, Google, and iPhone games to keep ourselves occupied. So why do we get bored and why is boredom important? Although boredom seems trivial to humans, boredom is actually exciting because it is the most unique emotion of all.
One moment you are sitting through a long and dry lecture wondering why the professor hid the clock, and the next moment you are in a rocket ship heading to the end of the galaxy where anything is possible. If boredom is a type of discomfort, then why are we able to imagine the greatest things possible as the side effect? The answer is that boredom is like a gateway to our imagination. Jennifer Schuessler points this out when she says: “…boredom may itself be a highly useful human capacity, at least according to some psychologists and neuroscientists, who have begun examining it not just as an accomplice to depression and addiction but as an important source of creativity, well-being and our very sense of self” (Schuessler 10). When we are bored, our minds take us to an exciting place to keep our brain stimulated. Our brain activity during borden only goes down by 5 percent as well.

When overcome, a propensity to boredom is a sign of a healthy mind. Creatures who felt it wound up doing more. So the next time you are a little bored, be proud and give yourself time away from the usual distractions to get “bored”. It will be boring, but boring is literally how holes get made and perfected.

Boredom was everywhere in my world, and if you asked the kids, as often as I did, why they felt so bored, they always gave me the same answers: They said the work was stupid, that it made no sense, that they already knew it. They said they wanted to be doing something real, not just sitting around. They said teachers didn’t seem to know much about their subjects and clearly weren’t interested in learning more. And the kids were right: their teachers were every bit as bored as they were
In the essay, “The Boredom Effect,1952, writer Ellen Ruppel Shell acknowledges the child’s mind and how creative their mind are. The purpose of this essay is to persuade the readers that a child should never be bored and that they should always have something to do with their spare time. She felt that children should taste their freedom by exploring the world. Also, she said guardians should not try to create activities or put them in sports to keep them occupied. Ellen writes “Back then, parents pretty much stayed out of children’s business.” In her thesis, she mentions that parents should let children be bored. I agree with Ellen, parents should let their children be children and let them be creative. However, parents shouldn’t control their
Teachers need to be allowed to teach the students how they want so the lesson plan is more fun and exciting. Boredom is just an emotion and teachers shouldn’t have to feel that because of them, they are affecting the state of mind of students.. Teachers should able to engage the students with their own thought process. Teachers need freedom and should not have to worry about how fast they teach a subject because the government wants it done in a specific way at a specific time. Teachers understand that students all learn differently and many teachers want to help all of their students, but they are stuck in a school system that tells them how they must teach.
Humans subconsciously go in search for an exciting location after having become bored of theirs. Humanity goes in search of an exciting location their satisfaction tank is not filled anymore because of their daily boring routines. In a sense one becomes so familiar with a place that he or she is part of the location, like walking the same path to work or home or seeing the same people doing the same thing every day. When discussing how people become too habituated to an environment, De Botton wonders “What would it cost those who are out for a walk or crowding out of the theatre, to look up for a moment and admire the brilliant constellation which gleams above their head?” (De Botton, 66.) People do not seem to appreciate what is in front of them, which in this case above them. He or she becomes blind because they had never bothered to look up. One falls in a routine excluding the fact that there is much to be seen without having to be out of one’s environment. To show this point, De Botton explains having walked around his home town

One reason why we feel bored at home is because we have very little expectation of being amused. The environment around us is so familiar to us that we can walk with our eyes closed and still manage to get from one place to another. We do not think that there could be something that can fascinate us. We have been living is this environment for so long that we have become habituated. There may be many interesting things in our home area but we chose to ignore them all. We only focus on the things that matter to us at the moment. This goal oriented observation causes us to miss out on the important details of our home place. Alain de Botton writes, “of the 4,000 things there might be to see and reflect on in a street, we end up actively aware of only a few” (de Botton, 63). We can get away from this blindness if we free ourselves from the goal oriented mindset. There are so many things that we miss in our everyday life. The fast paced life style allows us to achieve more, but it also makes us unaware of the things that we miss out on. Alain de Botton states in the essay, “I walked along this particular road almost every day to reach my underground station and was unused to considering it an anything other than a means to my end” (de Botton, 63). We travel on a same path every day and to us it is just a way to reach our destination. If we see our everyday path with a

The Puritans left no room in their lives for idleness of any kind, they strongly believed unoccupied hands were tools of the devil. Subsequently, Modern America also hates to be bored, there is a continuous need to be entertained. ...
What is motivation? According to text, motivation is defined as a set of factors that activate, direct, and maintain behavior, usually toward a certain goal. Motivation is the energy that makes us do things: this is a result of our individual needs being satisfied so that we have inspiration to complete the mission. These needs vary from person to person as everybody has their individual needs to motivate themselves. Depending on how motivated we are, it may further determine the effort we put into our work and therefore increase the standard of the productivity. There have been a wide variety of theories about motivation developed over the years. Several are drive-reduction theory, arousal theory, psychosocial (both incentive and cognitive) theory, and Maslow’s H...
Leslies chapter Puzzles and Mysteries, focuses on the correlation between age and curiosity. “...we become content to fall back on our stock knowledge and mental habits we built when we were younger, rather than adding to or reserving it.”(32) As we grow older our arrogance gets the best of us, we believe there is nothing more for us to learn. 13. Preventing Boredom and filling “free” time: To prevent students from becoming sidetracked and bored, I know it is important to have a continuous flow of activities. To ensure this, I plan all of my lessons with extra activities for unexpected “free” time. These efforts will help ensure that class time is used wisely for furthering education. I feel that the busier I keep my students the less likely they will have time for inappropriate behavior.
In the Essay, “ A Reunion with Boredom” Charles Simic argues that our unhealthy dependence on technology has disconnected us from the healthy benefits of being bored. This realization comes to him amid a few day power blackout as an after effect of Hurricane Irene, when Simic was left without access to any mechanical gadgets. What strikes Simic most is the way that society looks for always to be possessed and subsequently have put some distance between the individual reflection that originates from encountering quieter moments. However, I believe that that the earlier times did have its own distractions such as how technology was slowly progressing which made people more entertained and led to them not being bored. In addition, today’s distractions
