Chapter 01
Understanding the Space between Body and Clothing
In taking about form and expression, space is the topic in between that cannot be missed. A form is given to a dress on the wearer by the space between clothing surface and the body. The form is what gives the shape to the space inside and it is what creates the visual expression of the space inside. This chapter will discuss the topic space and its relevance with body and clothing.
1.1. Body and Clothing
As one of the basic needs of human, clothing has always been there close to body from the early times of human history. The basic utility of clothing was to protect body from different physical circumstances in the environment like climatic changes, diseases, insects etc. As Bradley

Development of western fashion norms about female body and femininity has also influenced by this space in between body and the clothing. Closeness of the garment material to the wearer’s body has been the consideration
As the space of a building gives the person shelter and protection, a dress fulfills the basic needs of protection.
As Charini (2005), argues that as a house should be made in to a ‘home’ by specializing it to cater the needs of the person who is living in it, a dress also needs to cater the needs and likes of the wearer. She further says that as a space in home can convey different meanings and feelings, the space between body and clothing also needs to be organized in a way which gives different feelings to the wearer. (Suriyage, 2005)
Clothes must have a character that can be personalized by the wearer. This ability is by the character of clothes formed by its surface and the volumes of space created. Space explored in clothes builds different relationships between the body and the clothes. (Suriyage, 2005)
According to the utilization of space between body and clothes, clothes can be either passive or active in its practical
To conclude, the capability to create customized clothing is becoming undemanding as technology evolves. Ready made apparel was only available in predetermined sizes before the American Civil War, this exemplifies how the sizes were arbitrary and were not the same on a broad scale. The statement “The wealthy’s clothes were made by tailors” is a prime example of how tailored outfits are costly. Today, designers have computer-aided design to their disposal; this improved the creation of clothing in many ways, making it effortless to design the clothing and to also produce them. With the creation of new technology making clothes, fabrics will become easier.
In conclusion, it is significant to recognize the revolution of the female silhouette throughout history along with women’s roles in today’s society and also, the physical restrictions imposed on them. The silhouette of women’s fashion has changed as the idea of the perfect female figure has reformed. Nevertheless, in the early twentieth century the concept of women leading more active and lively life meant that fashion also needed to become more cooperative to physical action and less limiting.
The color of clothing that the women wear is an important element because it helps to show the women’s power and privileges. The color of clothing a woman wears reflects how much freedom she will have. Th...
Clothing changed the role that women played in the country, specified that they have more freedom, and indicated the social class in which one belongs. Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant and author, sheds light on the notion that if a person were to love their clothes, whether it be expensive or not, they would be able to sustain that pride with himself everyday: “If you fold your clothes in the formal spark of joy, you can actually make the joy last longer.” Albeit some may argue that personality has no correlation with the way a person dresses, the fact of the matter is that clothing choice can influence the way one acts on a specific day.
In all parts of the world and throughout history the topic of a woman’s dress has been an issue. In the United States alone 1.3 million women have revealed having been raped or sexually assaulted in their life time while only 84 thousand rape cases were reported to the authorities. This means that a woman in the United States has a 1 in 5 chance of being sexually assaulted with the height of the danger being between the ages of 16 and 19 years old. Though this is not only an issue that effects the women of this country only three percent of men have admitted to having been sexually assaulted compared to the much larger percentage of women suffering from these kind of advances. This issue behind this subject is that women are often blamed for attacks that happen to them because of the manner in which they dress. Some of the first questions ask of a woman by investigators in what she was wearing that to time of the assault. The general attitude is that the woman was “asking for it.” and thus were given what they deserved. In many homes and religious institutions the topic of a woman’s modesty is presented while she is still a girl. She is often taught to clothe herself in such a way as to not arouse the lust of a man and that it is their duty to keep the thoughts of a male or any other individual clean. To this view point there is much objection as many women believe they should not be held responsible for the actions or thoughts of another being. In order to resolve many issue linked with this subject the proposal can be made that members of both sexes refrain from wearing clothing. This proposal is made, with this topic in mind, as a simple suggestion to to resolve conflicting opinions on the matter of dress and modesty, to redu...
Ever since their invention many centuries ago, clothes have been used as a way of communicating. The message communicated relies on a number of factors including the social background of both the communicator and the receiver, and the context in which the message is communicated. Although at times the exact message or symbolism one is trying to portray may not be clear, it is evident that clothing has long been embraced as one of the best ways to project one’s desired personal image to those around them.
To begin with, I will look at each of the two subjects. Fashion is an extremely large subject with many sub-categories and can mean many different things, however in this essay I will take fashion to mean the popular clothing style. I will put emphasis on looking at high fashion as these are the leaders of their field. Fashion itself though, is not to be confused with clothing. Clothing is a part of fashion, but it is predominantly purely functional, for protection from different aspects of the environment. Fashion however, is primarily for image. It is a way to present individuality and personality. A physical mouldable form of expression. Designers wish to create works of art that can be worn, and this is wear clothing becomes an art form.
Fashion has an ability to transform an image and make social statement. To most fashion is a form of art, while others being a religion. Throughout history there have been many renowned fashion embellishment and fabric manipulation techniques used by many designers that have shaped the name of fashion and influenced many to this day. This essay investigates fashion embellishment and fabric manipulation techniques and trends of 1920s including socioeconomic factors.. middle of paper ... ... It also analyzed the influences of modern dresses. As Palmer and Clark (2005) mentioned earlier, both decades are the classic era in fashion history.
To begin with, I shall look at what fashion is; it is a currently popular style or practice involving clothing, footwear or accessories. It mostly refers to the current trends in looks and dressing style of a person (Cumming 234). In most cases, fashion is confusedly related to costumes; when a person talks of fashion they are seen to mean fashion in terms of textile. Fashion is seen to originate from the Western world and it is copied by other places. In this paper, we shall look at how fashion affects lifestyles and the group of people who are affected most. The paper further investigates how media is used to transmit fashion from one region to the other. Although it has been seen to affect people’s lives many people have different perspectives on fashion and dressing.
Clothing has been around for thousands of years; almost as long as the modern human has. At first, it served the practical purpose of protection from the elements; but, as life for early humans stopped being a constant struggle to survive, they started noticing how they looked and the concept of fashion began to take shape. These first few garments were typically dyed draped cloth that was pinned at the shoulder and/or waist. This was seen in many ancient civilizations around the world, Greek and Roman the most notable. Over time, clothing began to get more and more complex and formed to the body’s shape, eventually leading up to the tailored style we now have today. However, the sophisticated world of Haute Couture; or high fashion, can distinctly trace its roots to Paris during the mid-19th century. Clothing from there was thought to be superior to those from anywhere else, and women began to come from all over Europe just to buy dresses. This was probably due in part to one notable dressm...
