Society constantly tries to make everyday life quicker and easier through technology. Today, an American can simply go to an app of their choosing that can either allow them to tasks such as request a quick ride to avoid being late for work, purchase a gift for grandma for her upcoming birthday, and even pay this month’s rent with just a push of a button. Therefore, industries relating to taxis, retail industry, and real estate are enduring the digital disruption that has arose from the mere fact that they can not meet the demands that technology so easily gives Americans. Nevertheless, there is bound to be another industry that is in technology’s black book. I believe that the next industry that technology is going to cross off it’s list is
the food industry. Food is another daily necessity which happens at least three times a day. For a homemade meal, there’s a long process of cooking required let alone going to the store and acquiring the ingredients to make the food in the first place. Already, there are chains of fast food restaurants that make up a lot of Americans’ diets due to the accessibility. However, there's always room for “improvement”. Supermarkets like Walmart and Kroger notice this increase in profits for the quick service provided by fast food chains, and they have now developed an online grocery list app that allow consumers to select items they want and set a time for them to pick up their items instantly when arriving to the store. This has Americans accomplish their shopping in an instant rather that the leisurely practice of typical shopping. Not only have supermarkets hopped onto the technology bandwagon, but there are separate companies being formed for the sole purpose of sending consumers prepared meals of their choice to their doorstep. With these meals, instructions and exact measurements of ingredients are provided. Accordingly, shopping is thrown out of the picture since the companies supply everything without the need of leaving their home. Best of all, the meals are set at one price instead of spending a lot of money to buy a bulk of ingredients that may or may not be used later on after the one meal it’s needed for. It’s fast, easy, and cheap; what more could an American want? There is a constant search in society for everything to be easier, quick, and cheap; and these new advancements in the food industry fit the bill. Though it may take time for Americans to become accustomed to the new way of purchasing food, it’s only a matter of time before supermarkets become another thing of the past.
The type of essay I chose to write for “The Book of Negroes” is a persuasive essay. Choosing this type of essay with allow me to organize my thoughts by using specific quotes and examples from the text to support my thesis statement. Although, an argumentative essay would work, I feel more comfortable writing a persuasive essay as I’m able to add my own emotions in my essay.
“I have learned that success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” This quote is by Booker T. Washington. In the book “Up from Slavery” Mr. Washington was a poor African American man who wanted an education. He was able to peruse an education, through hard work and perseverance. Then he wanted to help others also receive an education, by building a school.
Have you ever felt stuck? Wherever you are, it’s the absolute last place you want to be. In the book Into the Wild, Chris McCandless feels stuck just like the average everyday person may feel. Chris finds his escape plan to the situation and feels he will free himself by going off to the wild. I agree with the author that Chris McCandless wasn’t a crazy person, a sociopath, or an outcast because he got along with many people very well, but he did seem somewhat incompetent, even though he survived for quite some time.
Holden tries to preserve his own innocence, and the innocence of others by not letting go of childhood memories and through his desire to suspend time. Holden views the adult world as corrupt and full of phonies. He admires childhood because of how it is free of corruption, and untouched by the adult world. IN order to preserve his own innocence Holden often attaches himself to childhood memories. The Museum of NAtural History is one of Holden’s favourite places . He mentions that his grade one teacher Miss. Aigletinger used to take his class there every saturday. While writing about the museum he says, “The best thing, in that museum was that everything always stayed right where it was” (121). This shows how Holden wants to preserve his innocence because he expresses how he likes how everything stayed the
Today there are many controversial subjects discussed throughout the media. One of the most discussed is race and the Black Lives Matter movement. Recently, I came across an article titled “The Truth of ‘Black Lives Matter’”, written by The Editorial Board. The article was published on September 3, 2015, to the New York Times. In the article, The Editorial Board writes about what they believe African Americans are facing as challenges in society today, including the all-too-common police killings of unarmed African-Americans across the country. The Editorial Board is right that some African Americans have been treated unfairly, but all ethnicities have been. Life is a precious thing that comprises all ethnicities. This brings us to ask; why
Tom Robinson, a black man in To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the main characters in
In 1348, people from all around the world suffered from one of the most deadliest and cruel diseases known as the Black Death. The plague killed so many people in Europe that some of the villages were abandoned and the population of some cities was decreased by half. Giovanni Boccaccio was an Italian writer and poet who eye-witnessed and described the horrors caused by the Black Death in his novels Decameron. In Boccaccio’s work, the sick people were left behind to survive on their own and even children were left behind by their parents because they were sick. Unfortunately, from all the people who died during the epidemic, the peasants were those who actually benefited from it. The Black Death end up with political,
I, Jeremiah Finch, believe that everyone, no matter what their color, should receive justice and equal rights in court. Like Atticus says, every man should be equal at least in court, every man deserves a fair trial where his word will be believed to be as good as any others. Tom Robinson did not receive a fair trial. The no good jury decided to believe the lies of the white trash Ewells who are disgraces to Maycomb. The trial wasn’t based off of justice, evidence, an’ truth, it was based off of color. Good righteous judges and lawyers sho’ should be able to make up for the worthless men on the jury. I told all this to Miss Maudie one day after the trial, while Scout, me, and Dill was eating her famous Lane Cake. Black men just aren’t treated the same as white men down here, and I know it
In the Autobiography, “Narrative Life of Fredrick Douglas: An American Slave,” Fredrick Douglas writes to show what the life of a slave is like, because from personal experience, he knows. Fredrick Douglas not only shows how his life has been as a slave but shows what it is like to be on the bottom and be mistreated. Douglas shows that freedom isn’t free, and he took the initiative to become a free man. Not many African-Americans had the opportunity to make themselves free and were forced to live a life of disparity and torture. Through his experience Douglas shows us the psychological effects of slavery. Through Douglas’s memory we are able to relive the moments that continued to haunt his life. Douglas’s book showed the true
Atticus never does anything like the other dads, he is the worst father ever; he does not teach Scout and I how to shoot or play football with the other men, and he plays checkers and a Jew’s Harp. Today, Scout and I decided to take our new air rifles for a test in the woods and shoot some wildlife. Unfortunately, little did we know it, but there was a mad dog near us. We then went over to Cal and told her we saw a dog acting strange; she found out that it was a mad dog that was on the loose, and dashed to phone Atticus. After that, she immediately calls Miss Eula May, the town telephone operator, to tell her to let everyone on the street know that they should stay out of the way of the rabid animal. Disastrously, the Radleys don’t have a phone,
One difficulty many students face is procrastination. Most of the time, it occurs because students do not complete their homework ahead of time. There are many opportunities that a student does not need to attend parties and study at home. Although it is easier said than done, Malcolm X also explained that, “ One of the biggest troubles with colleges is there are too many distractions, too much panty-raiding, fraternities, and boola-boola”(Malcolm X 512). Malcolm X would have fallen into the same category as the student because of the many distractions that was stated. Despite these claims, students should at least remain focused on the task at hand. Malcolm X became the person he is today because, “I saw that the best thing I could do was get hold of a dictionary”(Malcolm X 503). He took an opportunity to learn new words and grasp his newfound knowledge into use. As college students, we should do the same. Students should not have to be manipulated by
“I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more, if only they had known they were slaves.” Harriet Tubman was a woman known for her important role during the time that led up to the Civil War. She was a woman of incredible strength, courage, and determination. And while Harriet Tubman is credited for giving the slaves an option as to what way they shall spend the rest of their life, the sad truth lies within the quote above. While many people like to believe that slavery was a horrendous act that happened only with small minded people from the south many years ago, that isn’t the case in all honesty. In fact, the idea of slavery was highly debated about and troubled more minds than many are led to believe. While there are
It was in elementary school that I learned books are people. I know, when we are younger everything is personified, but with books it felt true. Like most elementary school classes, we would make a trip once a week or so to the library. Every year started the same, our class would sit in an antsy circle waiting to be read to or released into the stacks, but the librarian would start with a small lecture about how to treat the books. She would remind us to place books on the shelves with the spine out because not even books wanted their underwear to be showing. Also, be sure to put them right side up so blood doesn’t rush to their heads. Most importantly though, do not hurt them. Never break their spine from opening them too far or let their
A large problem in America has always been racial issues and still continues to be prevalent in our society today. The United States likes to boast its reputation as a “melting-pot” as many cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds are mixed together, yet the country still continues to isolate individuals based on race. In the constitution, it says that everyone is supposed to have equal rights and liberties, yet after over 200 years, many minorities still struggle to obtain the same respect and equality that their white counterparts have always have. Laws should be created to enforce equality and justice for racial groups.
The new age of the coming decade is becoming dominated by technology. People all around are connected to technology and the internet in some way or another. Computers are no longer restricted to our homes. With laptops that rival the hardware of desktop computers, technology is no longer restricted to our homes. With the emergence of tablets and smartphones, people are able to carry mini-computers in their pockets. Both tablets and smartphones have full, unrestricted access to the internet just like a laptop or a desktop. Technology is even integrated with the places we go. Banks, fast food restaurants, and even libraries and fully integrated with technology. This kind of advancement was complete science fiction a decade ago, and now, it’s
