I recall my earliest impression of medicine when my father made frequent trips to the hospital to treat his chest pains. The care and treatment the doctors bestowed on my father sparked a desire to one day become a physician myself. As I embarked on my journey to reach my destination, I stumbled across multiple paths, hesitant to take my first steps. I finally discovered the answers to my uncertainty when I made a visit to my dermatologist, who is affiliated with NYU Langone Medical Center. He explained that NYU had a distinguished pre-professional medicine program and exemplary research facilities. Next think I knew, I signed up for an information session and campus tour to quench my curiosity as to what I was going to find.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, as a biology major following in the pre-medicine track, I will be allowed to research on infectious diseases by using the latest genomic tools in the Genomics Core Facility while taking classes that contain comprehensive analyses of the major fields in biology. To further my interest in biology, I will join the Biological Society of NYU in order to venture out into the world to experience biology in a different setting other than the classroom. As I have partaken in Red Cross in which has allowed me to bring awareness to different diseases, I will be able to continue this activity in Heart to Heart to raise alertness to the risks of high blood pressure and Emergency Health Education to instruct emergency procedures regarding to health since I am First Aid, CPR, and AED certified. In the Tandon School of Engineering, as I major in the Science and Technology Studies program, I will be able to still participate on the pre-medicine track while working closely with biomolecular interaction in state-of-the-art laboratories such as in the Applied Dynamics and Optimization Laboratory. The endless amount of programs and resources provided by NYU will aid me to forge hundreds of roads within one field and delve into all the opportunities to attain my
I am excited to be submitting my application to Georgetown University School of Medicine, as this school’s mission and values reflect my own beliefs on the role of a physician. I believe that there is no fixed template to healthcare; medicine and health will vary across time, regions, and individuals, and as future physicians, it is crucial for us to recognize that. While standard science education is certainly critical, a broadened approach that draws on other knowledge and our own life experiences is just as essential to delivering quality healthcare. I believe that Georgetown Medical School’s tradition of “Cura Personalis” and its

The first known use of dermatology was established in 1819 and only in the 1930’s did its practice become more widely accomplished, known and sought after. (“Dermatology” 2014) Since then it has extensively evolved and changed and been able to provide services for women and men around the world. Originally being a part of the medicine field can now be considered a division of the beauty industry due to availability of services and treatments for aesthetic, pampering purposes, rather than just originally founded for medical issues of resolving skin disorders and diseases. Dermatology being defined as ‘a branch of medicine dealing with the skin, its structure, functions and diseases’ (“Dermatology” 2014) now offers many professions one being a dermatologist, whic...
Please explain your reasons for wanting to participate in the Garcia Center Summer Scholar Program.
My father, a private practice dermatologist, gave me the best possible opportunity I could have hoped for. He allowed me to spend as much time as I desired assisting in his pathology lab and even observing his work with patients. I saw firsthand the process of removing biopsies, or small samples of possible cancers, the biopsies’ journey through the pathology lab, preparing slides, observing slides under a microscope, and if the biopsy proves cancerous, the removal surgery. Even if dermatology is not necessarily the field I want to specialize in later in life, I received an excellent educational and practical foundation for laboratory work and working with patients. I knew from this experience that I wanted to go into the medical field. I was
When I was younger I always found myself interested in science of all varieties. In elementary school, I aspired to be a scientist, but I was not sure what career path to take. In 10th grade, I found myself in Pre-AP Biology thinking that biology, although fascinating and complex, made perfect sense to me. I took AP Biology during my Junior year and felt that same pull. I loved biology and was certain that I wanted to study biology in college. My big question was what could I possibly do with a Biology degree.
My passion and intrigue for the medicine began when I was a child. In my early years, I often crossed paths with the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology. I zealously glanced upon the magnificent heart sculpture that stood at the gates of the hospital, and my curiosity arose about the human body. This curiosity allowed me to continue my untiring voyage and love for medical knowledge. Working with my mother who was a registered nurse, I used to travel to rural health campus for patient education. We taught importance of sanitation in combating common illness, preventing vitamin deficiencies and usefulness of family planning. I was able to witness the dangers of misinformation due
In addition to an unfamiliar environment, health came as another challenge. Beginning my undergraduate at Bellevue College, a severe gastric ulcer led to emergency surgery that left me immobilized and recovering for months. Determined to continue my education without delays, I persevered and completed my education at Bellevue College while gaining an interest in Biology. Transferring to the University of Washington my interest in healthcare amplified while doing research in Developmental Biology. While conducting research I became very intrigued with the evolution of the human body through movement.
As I wait for a decision to be made regarding my status, I am constantly reminded of my pleasant interview experience at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. It is my pleasure to speak fondly of such an outstanding innovative institution, when my peers ask for updates in my life. Your school is my top choice for a number of reasons, especially due to the commitment of serving our community. The fact that this program not only talks about serving, but has taken measures which have proven beneficial, is admirable. I believe the current curriculum and vision of your school can make me the best physician I can be.
-School integration has proven to be of the most effective reforms in the US education System since its inception, academic success has been achieved among the marginalized groups such as the African Americans and the Latinos. It has also given the African Americans an opportunity to seek better employment opportunities than the normal unskilled labor jobs that they were used to. Overall, the school integration has created huge differences in the lives of minorities allowing them to have better and healthier lives. Previous studies conducted showed that African Americans that attended desegregated schools have a higher probability of attending college and securing good jobs than those who attended segregated schools (Crain and Wells, 1997
First and foremost, being immersed in the field of health care at Zarephath has really given me an appreciation of the everyday tasks of Doctors—from the mundane to the intriguing. Many of the patients who come to Zarephath for care simply need a prescription, but others come in with various aches and pains. I have gained an appreciation for the way Doctors run tests and carefully analyze symptoms to provide a proper diagnosis. It is almost like solving a mystery; I am excited to learn about all types of diseases and their signs if/when I go to medical school, beyond
Over time, while people are becoming diagnosed it has become evident clients are bearing the label of their diagnosis much more than necessary. This has increased due to the attitude society bears of people who are living with various disorders that others do not have. Which leads people to believe those who may have a diagnosis are abnormal, when compared to the people around them. In order to address this issue effectively, the current diagnostic approaches need to be reviewed in order to make improvements to the system that is being abided by currently. For there are many differing views when it comes to distinguishing abnormality from normality, however this can be done by looking into the biological, psychological, and sociocultural perspectives
My desire is to merge my passion for helping others and love of problem solving with medicine to ultimately become a Pathologist. Biology to me is far more than the study of life and living organisms. To me it is the intricate act of taking the fundamentals of life and using these elements to create extensive connections, generating clarification on theories regarding how all life is able to exist and adapt. I believe the subject of biology is so much more than the A-Level textbook I am currently studying, but a whole world of research and new innovative opportunities, with breakthroughs that can change people’s lives. It is this premise and the ever changing world of science that has fuelled my enthusiasm for biology over the duration of my school years. I first became fascinated with the subject during my first year of fast track GCSE biology lessons.
I wish to double major in biology and environmental studies because it is a way where I can learn about many different fields in science while incorporating its direct association with human interaction and understanding. I have always seen science as the most important, and my ...
