Adele released 21, her second studio album on January 24, 2011 in the United Kingdom and February 22, 2011 in the United States. 21 was released on a joint contract with Columbia Records and XL Recordings. Adele first wanted to name the album Rolling in the Deep that was meant to summarize the way she felt about her relationship, referring to having someone that is always there to support you. However, she decided against that title and the album was eventually named 21 because it coincided with her age when it was written. Adele considered 21 as an autobiographical time piece that represented her progressing maturity personally and her artistic growth. Adele began writing 21 in April 2009, while she was in a happy relationship with a man 10 years her senior. She was dissatisfied with the moods portrayed from the songs, and ended studio sessions for one month because she felt she lacked inspiration. Then, a day after her break up from her 18-month relationship, she contacted her producer Paul Epworth to begin recording in May 2009. She informed her producer that she and her partner had a huge argument and that she wanted to express her feelings through song. Although Adele was heartbroken, she was musically motivated and fired up. She stated that it was hard for her to write music when she was happy, and that it was easier when she was hurting. Adele found a way to focus all of her energy and emotions into her music, composing songs that combed through the details of her failed relationship. Adele worked with various producers on the album, with Rick Rubin being the most well-known. 21 was then recorded, because there were a number of producers, some songs were recorded in studios in Europe and others in the United States. There... ... middle of paper ... ...eek. The album also top the charts in the U.S. taking the number one spot with sales of 352,000 copies within the first week. Adele broke the record for the longest number-1 album by a woman in Billboard history, beating the record that was formerly held by Whitney Houston’s soundtrack The Bodyguard. 21 spent its 23rd week at number one in March 2012, which made it the longest-running album at number one since 1985. Much of the success of 21 is connected with its ability to attract many different listeners. Largely, her followers are fans of pop, adult contemporary, and R&B because those are the vibes given from her music. The album appealed to listeners both young and old. Many people were just listening to 21 to make sure they were culturally “in the know”, since her music was so widespread. The album continues to be successful today, 3 years after its release.
