Bill Mason was a film maker who had several hobbies that consisted of canoeing and painting. As a film maker he would spend hours or days looking for the perfect shot. “His camera was the brush and his film was the canvas.” When painting he would layer the paints on his canvas to create a 3D effect on his work. Combining his passion for canoeing and painting he would often recreate his favourite experiences while out in his canoe. After being diagnosed with cancer Bill Mason and his family opted to help him finish his paintings and books and were able to have them published. His painting style was unlike your average painting. Bill would use a palette knife and small (6”) canvas to make his art. He stated. “With most paintings techniques, close
examination usually reveals brush or palette knife strokes. But with my painting, close examination does not reveal how the paint was applied, there are no brush strokes.” Bill loved canoes and all shapes and sizes and once he offered to replant a woman’s entire garden if he could take her flower garden canoe. Bill often said that it is not the wanting to ride every rapid or every lake but more so the journey from when you put the canoe in the water and when you get out. To him the view while in the canoe made his entire journey worth it. “On a river journey by canoe, doing portage properly and enjoying the scenery along the way is just as important as paddling the canoe.” After his passing his daughter discovered one of his old painting boxes and uncovered a very special painting of one of his favourite spots to go canoeing, “Old Woman Bay, Morning Mist”. Together with her mother, they released his ashes in the clear green waters of the Old Woman Bay. “Like him, I find that paddling can take you on a voyage of creativity where you store experiences in your memory to treasure for a lifetime.”
Arthur Keller was a very talented artist; he painted using live models, and worked well with charcoal, acrylics, oils, pastels, watercolor and pencil. Keller was able to bring a realistic look to his paintings, using shadows, patterns, details, and shading. Although he is not alive anymore, his paintings will be around forever.
On Saturday, March 15, 2014, I visited the Metropolitan Museum in New York. The gallery #753, which is a part of so-called American Wing, features oil paintings of the revolutionary period in America. The paintings seen in this gallery celebrate heroes and hard-fought battles of the new nation. The most popular type of painting of that time remained portraiture. Portraits in extremely large numbers figured in interiors, where they were arranged to convey not only domestic, but political messages as well. Hence, it is natural, that such iconic figure like George Washington became a model for numerous artists of that era, including Gilbert Stuart and Charles Willson Peale, for whom Washington actually sat. Two exceptional portraits of Washington, the general and the the first President of the United States are highlighted in this paper.
Raul Ramirez is a very confident, creative student that is in Mr.Ward’s high school english class in The Bronx,New York, who loves to paint. Raul used to paint his sister by bribing her with whatever he could scunge up,but know his girlfriend just sits for him. He knows that painting will not give him much money and tells the readers by saying “People just don’t get it.Even if I never make a dime --which,by the way,ain’t gonna happen--I’d still have to paint.” Raul is also a very shy teenager that wants to be an artist and will be the first person in his family to be a painter if he becomes one. From the very beginning, young Drew was building a name for himself, not only as a surf artist, but also as a local hellman in the big surf. In high school Drew worked as an airbrush artist, hoping to save up enough funds to pay his way to Hawaii. His hard work paid off, allowing Drew to catch his plane to the topical Islands shortly after his high school graduation . Drew found that his southern accent made him stick out like a sore thumb, but he made up for it by fearlessly taking on some of the biggest mavericks that an angry Pacific ocean could throw at him. His custom board designs also where making a stir at the beach side, but sadly, not so much with the board shapers . The classic white board and curren rail bands were the current fad, and shapers where leery to use Drew’s unconventional illustrations. As if rejection wasn’t enough, Drew suffered a major wipe out that left him disabled for over 3 months. Unable to work, Drew packed up and moved into his friend’s garage in San Clemente. This seemingly tragic event actually would turn out to be the starting point of Drew’s career.
Ernie Barnes: Research of the Football Artist Ernie Barnes was and still is one of the most popular and well-respected black artists today. Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, in 1938, during the time the south as segregated, Ernie Barnes was not expected to become a famous artist. However, as a young boy, Barnes would, “often [accompany] his mother to the home of the prominent attorney, Frank Fuller, Jr., where she worked as a [housekeeper]” (Artist Vitae, The Company of Art, 1999). Fuller was able to spark Barnes’ interest in art when he was only seven years old. Fuller told him about the various schools of art, his favorite painters, and the museums he visited (Barnes, 1995, p. 7).

For the New York School, as they came to be called, art was personal, and displayed the artist’s own expressive gesture. Though they were considered a group, rather than adhering to a unified, cohesive style, Abstract Expressionists strove to create their own, individualized form of expression. Two Abstract Expressionist groups developed. For Action Painters, such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline, art was all about the gesture and the process. No preparatory sketches were made, rather, the art flowed out of the artist’s brush, often by means of non-traditional painting techniques. Color Field painters like Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman created canvas surfaces to evoke emotion and mood through the use of all-over color. With the advent of Abstract Expressionism – Jackson Pollock in particular – art critic Clement Greenberg argued that the art world had finally achieved true modernist painting with Abstract Expressionism’s all-over, flattened image that drew attention to the canvas and the paint itself, rather than portraying illusionistic
Poet Gwendolyn Brooks states, “Art Hurts. Art urges voyages - and it is easier to stay at home” which is true for many viewers when experiencing Bruce Nauman’s work. Nauman is classified as a contemporary American artist whose works also incorporate ideas of post-modernism and minimalism. He has been making art since the early 1960’s and has moved through many different mediums as his art progressed and his style changed. At first Nauman was a painter who soon ended that career and turned to sculpting, photography, film, and video. Bruce Nauman’s works of art have interested me and inspired my final assignment by his professional legacy, inspirations, and techniques.
When I imagine an artist, I picture a Parisian dabbing at a sprawling masterpiece between drags on a cigarette seated in an extravagantly long holder. He stands amid a motley sea of color, great splashes of vermillion and ultramarine and yellow ochre hiding the tarp on the studio floor. Somehow, not one lonely drop of paint adorns his Italian leather shoes with their pointed toes like baguettes.
In the mid 1800’s realism was developed as a style of painting to replicate the world as it was seen in a traditional artistic style. This allowed for a new style of art to be created that was based of a real moment or scene but to forget the traditional artistic laws such as distinct lines and forms. Approaching art from this impressionistic view Monet’s painted “Impression, Sunrise” bringing to life a natural scene of a hazy harbor using quick, short brush strokes and defining uses of color and natural light. Van Gough’s “Starry Night” uses similar impressionistic styles to paint a natural scene using vibrant contrasting colors, yet he embellishes the scene to create art that in not merely a landscape but a piece of self expression and shifted
James Joyce in his novel “A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” says “The object of the artist is the creation of the beautiful.” (134) For Stephen Dedalus after the reoccuring stream of consciousness throughout his youth, one of the factors of his creation into the artist is women. Indeed it is the women throughout the novel that shape Stephen into the man he finds himself becoming toward the end. Six women in particular that form specific functions in Stephens life are: Stephen’s mother, Eileen, Mercedes, the Virgin Mary, the prostitute, the birdlike woman by the water. These women affect and shape his character by loving him, inspiring him, and fascinating him.
