The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines jayhawk as, “a fictitious bird with a large beak used as an emblem in Kansas” (“Jayhawk”). Even though some people may say that the Jayhawk is not resemble a good role model, the jayhawk should be inducted into the mascot hall of fame because he makes an impact in the community, he has a fun and unique design, the jayhawk has an impact on his sport, and he performs memorably and groundbreaking performances.
As a general rule, mascots in the Mascot Hall of Fame should make an impact on their community. Big Jay would be a great nomination for the “Mascot Hall of Fame” because he makes a impact on his community. Big Jay makes an impact on his community by visiting schools and inspiring younger children. Big Jay is a great children mascot. Mascot books states, “Big Jay’s ABC Day is a colorful premier ABC book that takes readers of all ages through a day with their favorite mascot. Big Jay travels around his campus, learning about famous landmarks and fun places to

The jayhawk also known as Big Jay and his partner Baby Jay, definitely have a fun, memorable, and unique design. The jayhawk has evolved over many years but it has always had the colors blue, red, and yellow and the shoes which are meant for kicking opponents. In 1912, the first ever jayhawk was drawn by Henry Maloy, a cartoonist for the student newspaper. The jayhawk didn’t stay the same though, it has evolved over many years to the one everyone knows today. The University of Kansas website says, “By war's end, Jayhawks were synonymous with the impassioned people who made Kansas a Free State. In 1886, the bird appeared in a cheer--the famous Rock Chalk chant. When KU football players first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural to call them Jayhawkers” (“The Jayhawk”). So not only does the jayhawk have a fun, memorable, and unique design, there is meaning behind
The University of Mississippi’s mascot was the Colonel Reb, named and dressed after old plantation owners of the south during the Civil War. The university used several symbols that were meant to represent heritage, but are now considered racial towards African Americans. The use of these racial symbols caused and is still causing a huge controversy between the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the African American athletes and fans of the university. According to an article written in The New York Times Robbie Brown

For example, The Dartmouth Big Green were once called the Indians; Oklahoma removed Little Red; Marquette Warriors changed to the Golden Eagles; even the prestigious school of Stanford was once called the Indians. However, most schools or sports teams have accommodated by not removing or not showing their mascots, but for these teams to remove the names is taking away the history of the team, and in some ways probably bring positive spotlight to the Native American culture. These teams do not want to choose a name or mascot that a lot of people do not like or look down upon. They choose names that have a rich history, and they can carry on the tradition. This is why some sports teams have no problems with keeping their sports names without any
Cultural stereotypes have always existed and while they may have been acceptable to society in the past, that does not compel us to accept them in today’s society. One such stereotype which is used is that of Native American names and imagery for sports teams and in particular The Washington Redskins of the National Football league. While for many people, this is an argument that has just recently arisen, in actuality, the debate over the use of native names and images has been an ongoing issue for over 50 years. The subject of the Washington Redskins name has been debated across politics, media, academia, religious backgrounds and in the public square for many years.
Teams in every sport, at every level of competition, have a mascot. It is the mascot that represents the competitive spirit and team identity, motivating players and fans alike. Does the symbol chosen have any impact on whether a team wins or loses? Unlikely. But the choice of a Native American mascot continues to ignite debate and controversy among athletes, fans and alumni, as well as those people who might otherwise be disinterested in sports. Utilizing an Indian mascot is nothing more than a veiled attempt at hate speech.
...ers' evolution from mother and student into a leading voice against the merchandising of Native American sacred symbols -- and shows the lengths to which fans will go to preserve their mascots." In keeping all the Native American Mascots in schools, colleges, and professional sports teams we are showing a lack of respect. The Native Americans have voiced the lack of honor these names are bringing to them. "The fact that history has ignored the incredible pain we have inflicted on Native Americans does not now give us the right to ignore their largely muted call." Americans need to take a step back think about how they would feel if there ritual and or sacred tradition was misused. "We feel that we are being put in a position of sacrificing our dignity and pride and will never be treated as equals in white society as long as the use of Indian symbols continues."
Some people think the mascots are offensive because they use derogatory terms, but some people think they’re okay because it’s a celebration of diversity. Here’s some reasons why people say yes to the mascots. Going back to what I said about the Washington Redskins, Redskins is a derogatory term towards the Native Americans, like how the N-word is towards African Americans. Studies show that it can create a hostile learning environment in schools. Some believe that if the mascot offends even one person, that we should all listen.
The very vast and dominating history of the Pittsburg Steeler made it very interesting to write this paper on their large fan base. The Pittsburg Steelers where founded in 1933 making the city complete with 3 teams in the hierarchy: Pittsburgh Pirates, and the PITT Panthers. In the beginning they looked like a joke at times compared to the present day Cleveland Browns. This was until the hiring of head coach Chuck Noll in 1969 and the drafting of future Hall Of Fame Defensive Tackle “Mean Joe” Greene. The fan base started to sky rocket during the 1970-1980; this team won 4 Superbowls in the 1970 alone. But in the early 1980 the steel mill in Pittsburgh closed this meant that people had to leave to find new jobs. This is how the now known as Steelers Nation how so big because the workers of these steel mills moved and so did their passion for the team.
Mascots are beloved figure heads for sports teams everywhere almost every sport team has a mascot of some kind; that said, sometimes instead of bring people together it can cause a rift between two cultures. Such as Washington’s D.C.’s football team the “Redskins” often the word redskin was a derogatory word used against the Native Americans and while it may seem as though paying homage to the Native American community the overall stereotyped actions of the fans themselves as well as the sugarcoating of the previously racial slur has done little to bring the two cultures together and instead created a larger disconnect between white and Native American. The name Redskin should be retired and replaced so that rather
Team mascots that depict a certain type of group is wrong and should be changed. It is degrading and hurtful to far too many people to keep them from staying the same. Native Americans or any other race or ethnicity should not be stereotyped in a way that degrades them in any way. All teams that have mascots that are named after a certain race or ethnicity should be changed.
My idea for the school mascot is a Cardinal. The name should be Cardinal High School. This is because the Indiana State bird is a cardinal. It gives a new name to the new school while also remembering the shared heritage between the two schools. A common symbol or name is important to a community because it brings them together. All schools should have a mascot and theme because it gives spirit and pride to the school. The new principal should use the new school mascot and symbols to unite the diverse students. The new principal should also remember and carry on some of the traditions at the other high school to benefit the new school. This may be difficult however because some students may resent the new school. They may wish to go back to
John Butler Hickok was also commonly know as “Wild Bill”, but how the nickname originated has not been proven to be true. Whether it was received during his time in the army or not is unknown but it has been said that it originated when a lady yelled,”Good for you, Wild Bill!” after he had stopped a mob of drunkards from hanging a bartender, who had just shot a hoodlum in a brawl, by firing two shots above the heads of the crowd stopping the crazy mob. Even though the lady had mistaken Hickok for another man, the name stayed with him for the rest of his
Throughout my first year in middle school I have really started taking great thought into my future. I have realized that I am getting closer to my adult life and that I need to start to plan for the type of future that I wish to have. As much as I enjoy team activities, I do think of myself as more of a leader and would like to go about planning my career in this way. I am determined to go about things at an advanced pace which is why I believe I should be part of the National Junior Honor Society.
Picture yourself at your favorite baseball team’s game. When you look out into the field, something that usually catches people’s eyes is that teams mascot because is it is a fun, silly character. If you know of some mascots, you probably know that they are all some wacky color or something of the sort, but many don’t have something that distinguishes them from other mascots. Now picture the Swinging Friar. He is unique to many other mascots and has a completely different design compared to most. This is exactly what the Mascot Hall of Fame needs. Even though some may argue that the Swinging Friar doesn’t have what it takes to be in the Mascot Hall of Fame since he hasn’t had that big of an impact on the sport as the Padres have only gone
Another olympic mascot is an eagle named Sam. He represents America. His appearance is friendly so he doesn’t scare the kids. Sam speaks on behalf of optimism
