To begin with, the legendary Booker T. Washington believed that in order for blacks to gain equality in the United States, we need to peacefully “make friends in every manly way of the people of all races by whom we are surrounded” (Broesamle & Arthur, 52). Washington warned blacks that in order to earn the respect and equality from the white population, we must be prepared to start at the bottom. He meant starting at the bottom in jobs such as elementary teachers instead of college professors and manual laborers instead of CEO’s so we could earn the respect of whites. Booker T. Washington was an African American leader who established an African-American college in 1181. Then in 1895 delivered the Atlanta Compromise Speech to an audience of mainly Southerners, but some Northerners were present. In his speech he made a few points. He said, “No race can prosper till it learns that there is as much dignity in tilling a field as in writing a poem.” Washington believed that the African American race needed to learn first that manual labor was just as important as the work of intellects. He thought that until they learned this they were not worthy of becoming intellects themselves. The color line is thus important in teaching them this lesson. In her memoir Warriors Don’t Cry, Melba Pattillo Beals describes her experiences as she became one of the first nine black students educated in an integrated white school. She and her friends, who became known as the “Little Rock Nine”, elicited both support and criticism from their family members, friends, community members, military troops, in addition to the President of the United States. Melba’s experiences, while heartbreaking and sobering, highlight the strength to overcome that individuals can have over a system intent on keeping them down.
Johnica Garrett: In order to better ourselves, we must recognize and identify the problems within our community. Once this is done, we must be willing to work on these areas. We must implement programs that encourage unity within our communities. There are rifts amongst all groups of people, but the key is to not let these divisions be apparent to your enemy. An example of this is the unity America is portraying to the rest of the world right now. Despite the many problems we have within our country, our government realizes that we must at least appear to be united in the eyes of enemy. The black community needs to grasp the importance of strategy and competition. We must try twice as hard as anyone else in school and work to prove that we are at least their equals.

What has been described here has kept African Americans proud of where they came from and how they can overcome any problem that they are faced with. The phrase “Strength in numbers” comes to mind when reading what they had to endure especially the families of the four little girls that died in the devastating bombing of the 16th street church. They will always be remembered and missed dearly.
Black excellence can be achieved by respecting those who do the same, and being active toward the change you would like to see. No minority should have to conform, conceal, or submit in order to receive the same opportunities that Caucasians are afforded. Sterling Lecater Bland, Jr describes in his article “Being Ralph Ellison: Remaking the Black Public Intellectual in the Age of Civil Rights” that Ellison personally used a different approach for being an advocate. He states, “Ellison’s foundational ideas about the duties of black artists and intellectuals in the public sphere became a kind of a through-line in how he crafted and maintained his own public role in the age of civil rights,” (Lecater, 53). Ellison understood that there can be different approaches to how you want to be perceived, but they do not include being a radical or a stereotype. Bledsoe’s viewpoint is not effective because his obsession with maintaining an image cost a young man his education. As a child growing up in the Jim Crow South, Richard is faced with constant pressure to conform to the white authority. However, even from an early age, Richard has a strong spirit of rebellion. The black community reacts to his rebellion disapprovingly, and Richard suffers intense isolation and loneliness during the early years of his life, feeling that he does not fit in or belong with his family or the black community. An example of Richard’s rebelliousness because of his attempts to gain respect and equality is shown when he is selected as the valedictorian of his graduating class and he is asked to deliver a speech. The principal calls him to his office and tells him to recite a speech that the principal wrote himself, saying that Richard needs to recite his speech because he is going to be speaking in front of white people and it is important to make a good impression. Wilma went to physical therapy with her mom two times a week at a black hospital. It was hard to get to because it was 50 miles away and Wilma and her mom had to take a bus to get there. Wilma’s family never stopped encouraging her to do her exercises to help her walk. Wilma’s teacher also encouraged her. She said “Don’t dream about it. Wilma, I want you to do it” (Schraff 18). Wilma’s teacher was teaching her to never give up. Wima remembered this for the rest of her life. When her coach put her on the bench she never gave up. On the bench she would study the game and winning plays. Then she started racing. After losing one race Wilma said “Nobody goes undefeated all the time. If you can pick up after a crushing defeat, and go on to win again, you are going to be a champion someday” (Sherrow 24). Wilma realized that an important quality is being able to pick yourself up after a defeat. Wilma’s mother encouraged her to be a good runner in order to get a college scholarship. Later Wilma met the famous baseball player Jackie Robinson. He complimented her on her athletic abilities and said “Don’t let anything, or anybody, keep you from running“ (Sherrow 26). The statement “The message was clear, you are a black Male, your racial group membership matters, plan accordingly” (Tatum 216) describes how blacks are treated differently, which helps them develop the way one sees their self. Another part of identity development is how Blacks think academic achievement can only be for Whites. Black students and children grow up only exposed to successful white people, so they think it's uncommon or wrong to be successful and effective in the real world. In order for black children to feel equal and powerful, they need to be treated the same as Whites or otherwise, they will isolate themselves and “sit at their own separate table”.
Around the Late 1890 many African Americans wanted to get rid of discrimination. Booker T. Washington was an African American that wrote the Atlanta compromise speech and thought the only way to get rid of discrimination was by African Americans getting a vocational education. The Atlanta compromise speech focuses on African Americans being friends with white Southerners and for African Americans to get a vocational education or learn how to do skilled jobs in school. DuBois was another African American that criticized Booker T. Washington that Booker T. Washington way was incorrect and it wouldn’t help at all. DuBois believed that African Americans should get an education and there shouldn’t be any Jim Crow laws. Through Booker T. Washington’s Atlanta Compromise speech and DuBois critique it clearly states that African Americans can use many methods to get rid of discrimination, but there are dissimilarities and similarities on how to tackle discrimination.

This quote is symbolic of the expressed opinions and ideology of the founding fathers of America. History, especially the history of the American educational system, paints a contradictory portrait. Idealistic visions of equity and cultural integration are constantly bantered about; however, they are rarely implemented and materialized. All men are indeed created equal, but not all men are treated equally. For years, educators and society as a whole have performed a great disservice to minorities in the public school sector. If each student is of equal value, worth, and merit, then each student should have equal access and exposure to culturally reflective learning opportunities. In the past, minorities have had a muted voice because of the attitude of the majority. Maxine Greene summarizes a scene from E.L. Doctorow’s Ragtime, after which she poses questions that many minorities have no doubt asked silently or loud. “Why is he unseen? Why were there no Negroes, no immigrants? More than likely because of the condition of the minds of those in power, minds that bestowed upon many others the same invisibility that Ellison’s narrator encounters” (Greene,1995, p. 159). Multicultural education is needed because it seeks to eradicate “invisibility” and give voice, power, and validation to the contributions and achievements of people with varied hues, backgrounds, and experiences.
This is not to say that Black students do not face problems in private school settings. As many of these schools are predominately White, including the faculty, staff, and student population, certain challenges inevitably surface. Black youths face a hard challenge when their loving, well-meaning educational leaders, maintain a trend of racial inequities simply due to ignorance, and research reveals the negative impact of the same (Stevenson & Arrington, 2010). Not only educators, but also the school itself, by way of simple racial makeup, has proven to be problematic for Black students especially concerning geographic situations and socioeconomic statuses (Arrington & Stevenson, 2010; Orefield & Lee, 2006).
