Intro/Summary
The objective of the recommendation is to evaluate the multiple impacts of bicycle helmet legislation for cyclists of all ages. In addition, determine factors that lead to differences in outcomes observed across jurisdictions. The benefits of bicycle helmets being mandatory for all ages will impact the general public immensely. Seeing as cycling is an affordable mode of transportation and a great method of improving cardiovascular fitness, keeping safe during the activity should be a priority. The recognition of this recommendation relies on Minister of health Jane Philpott to introduce it too the cabinet for further approval and implementation.
Background The problem with bicycle helmet legislation across all jurisdictions

A study done in Cleveland compares the amount of students that wear a helmet from grade 1 through grade 7 across 4 neighborhoods, one neighborhood has helmet legislation and education program, another with just helmet legislation, and the other two with no legislation or education program. Results of that study concluded to 85% of students from the neighborhood with helmet legislation and education program wore helmets whereas the two neighborhoods that had no legislation and education program seen 21.5%of students that wore helmets (Macknin & Medendorp 1994). In terms of economic climate education programs can be incorporated in school curriculums, essentially having no extra cost at all thus being practical, cost-effective and socially …show more content…
A cost free method can include incorporation of bicycle safety program in elementary/middle schools and for adults and families, recreational center volunteer workshops will permit adults to take full effect of the educational program. A study done in Montreal, Canada regarding the evaluation of a bicycle education program, Certificat Cycliste Averti (CCA). This article states, that children became more aware cyclists and half of the adults changed their prospective on cycling related behavior (positive) (Van-Lierop, 2015). Positive implementations such as bicycle helmets and safety programs can motivate individual of all ages to partake in the
First published in 1957, Helmet for My Pillow is the World War Two memoir of Robert Leckie, United States Marine Corps veteran and military historian. Born in 1920, Philadelphia Pennsylvania native Leckie served in the Pacific Theatre with the First Marine Division as a machine gunner and intelligence scout during the Battle of Guadalcanal and later campaigns. One of eight children born into an Irish Catholic family began his writing career, at age 16 as a sports writer for The Bergen Evening Record in New Jersey.
Millions of people all over the United States choose motorcycles over automobiles for the thrill, speed, and high performance capabilities. On the other hand, motorcycles are not at all the safest way of transportation. Motorcycles do not provide the passenger with the outer protection that cars provide, therefore, when one crashes, the results are usually much more serious. Injuries to the head are responsible for 76% of fatalities when dealing with motorcycle crashes many of which could have been prevented had the rider been wearing a helmet. For this reason, many states have adopted the motorcycle helmet law. The law states that every passengers must wear a helmet at all times when riding on a motorcycle. This law has created a great deal of controversy. One side supports the law, believing that it protects motorcyclists from danger and saves the economy a great deal of money. The other side argues that the law is unconstitutional and it violates our right to freedom. However, statistics show overwhelming support in favor of the motorcycle helmet law. Although wearing helmets cannot prevent motorcycle crashes, they can greatly reduce the number of deaths caused by head injury as well as lowering taxes, insurance rates, and health care costs. Therefore, the helmet law should be put into effect in every state across the United States.
Following the Crenshaw documentary, we discussed how additional funding or the introduction of slightly “better” teachers is unlikely to aid in academic performance. It generally takes real change to the economic well-being of the surrounding area to improve students’ performance in schools. While it is certainly not my area of expertise, I would argue that this isn’t entirely true for all areas. In the previous documentary, we saw that Crenshaw High School was a reasonably well-funded school. It was on-par with many public high schools around the country from an appearance standpoint. Certainly, the students’ performance at Crenshaw was very low. There were important aspects of school such as special education and Hispanic-language accommodations that needed significant improvement. I do think, though, that Crenshaw was at a higher level of overall education quality and structural safety than many of the
Should bicycle helmets be made mandatory for all cyclist? That is what two elementary students asked for from their city council, an ordinance enforcing the use of Bicycle Safety helmets for children under 12. So on April 25, 2002, in Richardson, Texas, the city council had decided against an ordinance requiring bicycle helmets for children under 12. Of course they had their reasons for not passing the request made by two young girls. If they would have taken a serious look at the issue, they may have viewed it differently.
In the United States today, millions of students’ attend public schools and face some sort of violence that is associated with that school. It can be gang related or just simply bullying in the school. Because of these rising issues, parents are being forced to pull their children out of public school and home school them for their safety. Is this the best action for the children? Will they be missing out on many life skills that are learned while attending schools with peers their own age? How can the schools make our children feel safe so that they are able to attend the public schools and so that schools don’t lose out on valuable funding from the state? The idea that many believe will fix the problems at school is by implementing a dress code or uniform policy for all students. School uniforms should be mandatory for the increased safety of our students, for the improvement of grades/behavior and for the low cost.
NASA developed shock absorbent foams to prevent negative effects of g-forces on astronauts. The material used to make these helmets can be found medical beds, footwear, fighter jets and furniture. There are many types of helmets such as bicycle helmets, motorcycle helmets, full face motorcycle helmets, open face helmets, dirt bike or motor cross helmets, skateboarding helmet, corrective helmet, football helmet and many more. Those helmets come in different sizes, designs, styles, materials, as well as purposes. The bicycle helmet is made up of a hard outer shell and foam pads inside. Because cycling is a sport that increases heart rate and body temperature, bicycling helmets allows our body heat to escape. The bicycling helmet is designed to transfer the force upon the head to crushing the foam liner. There are many types of motorcycling helmets too! Motorcycling helmets are designed to protect the rider from speeds faster than bicyclists. Even though it looks different from a bike helmet, the basic design is similar but there’s harder outer shell, more complex padding and it’s thicker. The full-face motorcycle helmet is designed for high-speed protection. There are many advantages of this helmet because there’s a face shield, which keeps us safe from road debris and dust. The open face helmet protects the top, back and side of our head. The main advantage of this helmet is that it allows great visibility and comfort. We can also experience the rushing wind as we ride but it’s more dangerous because if we crash, it could also harm with the ground or objects as well as being scraped along the road as our body comes to a stop. There’s a visor and an extended chin area in a dirt bike or motor cross helmet so it does not feel...
I. Teaching anyone to ride a bike is a most memorable experience, but having them obey the rules and regulations when riding is one of peoples first exposures to obeying the law. Cycling is a great way to exercise as well as a convenient mode of transportation. But before you start riding you should take a few minutes to consider some important safety precautions.
Physical activities not only has benefits for parents, but also, helps children’s social life, and health. The studies done by Woonerf in Netherlands and safe routes to school programs have shown how sidewalk infrastructure can change spaces for children to being more active. The safe routes program should extended to not only developed countries. The program should cover the whole world. Short term and long term development should happen in cities to promote the existing routes and create new sidewalks based on whole generation needs for the future.
Every young kid hears their parents tell them to wear a helmet when riding a bike, or to put their seatbelts on every time they are riding in a car. This time happen to be a time when my mother told me a story about why it is important to wear a seat belt. I remember picturing the story in great detail and it made me fully understand the importance of a seat belt. I will never drive my
An examination of education in today’s world reveals many issues under research to determine their effects on school climate. Such issues have come to be known collectively as hot button issues. Hot button issues include religious issues, gender issues, racial issues, school violence, legal issues, and a host of other matters. Included in these is the issue of school dress code. The original research hypothesis concerned the influence of school uniforms on behavior among students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The research would evaluate the influence based on the incidence of discipline reports during the school day. The independent variable was school uniforms or prescribed dress codes, and the dependent variable was student behavior. Research mandated revisions in the research hypothesis because of the near direct relationship found between student behavior and student academic performance. The hypothesis was revised to include academic performance, as was the dependent variable. Research findings indicated that the influence of uniforms on school climate was not so clear-cut as one might have thought. In fact, research findings indicate that the influence of school uniforms on school climate is unique for each individual school and is dependent on a number of factors to include community demographics and attitudes, the type of dress code, how the dress code was arrived upon, and how the dress code is enforced.

Helmets are the number one item of safety equipment for anyone on a bike. Don't be fooled, though: the number one safety
Over the past decades our culture has changes dramatically. To which our nation was once a physically active nation. Yet now it seems that society discourages physical activity. The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
“Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional deaths for teens (16-17),” reported The New York State Department of Health. The most exciting thing about being sixteen in the United States is driving. Teenagers can not wait to be sixteen to drive, however, they do not understand the dangers that come with driving at such a young age. Sixteen is the age between child life and adulthood. It is a time when they are not stable and undergoing change, which makes them unsuitable to drive. Many teenagers would say that they need to get to places. In response to that claim, there are public transportation systems and bikes as available alternatives for young drivers. The financial stability and matureness of eighteen year olds proves
“Over the last decade children, in the United States have been gaining weight. Obesity is rapidly becoming an epidemic in our youngster’s lives.”(Spataro, 1999) With the added weight comes greater risk of diabetes, heart diseases and many other ailments. Our children must be taught how proper exercise can give them a better future. Biking is a great way to start the learning process, to introduce an active lifestyle to our children. One way to start the introduction is in the early years. They can gain a love for the sport starting very young. Parents can install child seats or pull a trailer to include them in daily workout routines. When children learn to ride a bike themselves they can accompany parents on shorter rides. Riding to a local park is wonderful motivation for a child to go a few extra miles. It is a great way for parents and children to spend quality time together. As children mature into young adults biking becomes a form of freedom and independence.
Learning occurs when each child is developmentally ready, and this happens at a different pace for each individual child. I experience this daily in my Kindergarten classroom. Although a lot has changed in education over the course of my career, I try to focus on the constant that each of my students can learn on any given day and that I must challenge all of my students to reach his or her potential. This is my school’s motto, and we recite it daily. Education has faced many challenges over the years with politics, the economy, students’ culture, and legal issues. Politics does play a crucial role in education. Different school systems and population areas receive more or less government funding. Educational dollars can play a key role in a school system receiving the latest technology, updated facilities, educational funds for teachers, and curriculum needs. I have been able to experience this for myself by transferring schools from the city to the county school district. The social aspect of learning affects children in different ways also. Different cultures of schools are negatively and positively affected as well. Having taught in an inner-city school for 9 years, I was able to witness firsthand the downfalls and negative effects that come into play for students who come
