painting cycling routes, and fixing traffic lights. . The short term process has low- cost, and they can fix all changes very fast. Long-term process takes more time to renew or change existing situation such as widening sidewalks, texture for pavement, and street lighting (Safe Routes to School, 2009).
For increasing children physical activity, improving well-designed routs for walking and bicycling between their home and school are necessary. Sidewalks as an important parts of a walking routes to school provide a space for children to make an independent experience from their parents to travel between the schools, and homes individually. Sidewalks create a multifunctional place for children’s walking, running, skating, and cycling without any routs safety fears. Accessible sidewalk networks improve physical mobility for children to reduce any health risk for children. For improving walkability, pedestrian path should be built in the both side of street to encourage children to have a motivation to start their trips on one side, and end it with another side to discover both sides (Safe Routes to School, 2009). For increasing children independent mobility, each street should have bike lane in both side of street to give an opportunity to children to decide what types of trips they prefer for their daily transport. Also, by providing bike lane, children whose house is far from school campus can come to school by their own biscle without parents’ supervision (Safe Routes to School, 2009).
Urban designer should consider at least five feet for bike lane width, and it should be the nearest lane to car routs without any curbs as barrier between street and bike lane. Bicycle lanes should have a different material or color and bike sign f...

... also understanding the ways in which restricting children’s activities, and children’s views on why they are often unable to achieve their needs from urban areas. The barriers can be solved by short term and long term development which are not cost a lot. It needs to be considered from city planners and designers.
Physical activities not only has benefits for parents, but also, helps children’s social life, and health. The studies done by Woonerf in Netherlands and safe routes to school programs have shown how sidewalk infrastructure can change spaces for children to being more active. The safe routes program should extended to not only developed countries. The program should cover the whole world. Short term and long term development should happen in cities to promote the existing routes and create new sidewalks based on whole generation needs for the future.
What Parents Need to Know about Playgrounds The essay, “Learning Responsibility on City Sidewalks” by Jane Jacobs, gives insight into the positive aspects that come out of neighborly interaction and expresses how the creation of playgrounds within the community can taint a child’s upbringing. The use of playgrounds is said to lead to a lack of joint responsibility which can have an influence on the youth within a community. The author feels that parks do not benefit pubescents in same the way that adult interaction does; therefore, they are frugal communal wastes.
Mitchell Duneier, a sociologist with a rather impressive curriculum vitae to his credit, spent five years of his otherwise privileged life keeping company with drunks, derelicts, drug addicts and the homeless on the sidewalks of New York's Greenwich Village. His purpose was not to exploit the individuals whose reason for being on these streets is to drum up whatever income they can by selling books and magazines; rather, it was to learn and understand why they were there. In the process of doing so, Duneier drew his arguments and methods mostly upon symbolic interactionism perspective's theories; his focus on "shared meanings", "deviant", `laws", "individual (and social) interactions" flourish throughout "Sidewalk."
In conclusion, the author has given a common issue in our society, which is safety for children. Although the debate tends to replace all traditional equipment on children's playgrounds, it still causes us to think more about how to develop children in the perfect way. Do we need to keep children too safe? And this point is the success of the writer because his article is viable and very comprehensive to the intended audience, providing balance as well. By expressing the opposing ideas of two sides in the argument, the readers actually have the chance to give their own
She also introducing new urban building standards. This this article she talks about, the idea some people have of tearing it down and rebuilding. She also talks about ideas people have about some parts of towns. In Boston, she talks about the area of North End, and the change that it was over gone. During her second visit to this area, she discovered that it had changed. She talked to other about it, although the statistic were higher than the city, the people still saw it as a slum. They felt that they needed to tear it down in order to build something better. This leads to the conclusion that the urban planners to do understand that the people of the city need. They have ideas that were developed years ago that they are still using. These ideas do not take account what the people want. The author also introducing new ideas of a perfect city to live in and what it would look like. The idea of a garden city was introduced. This city would be built around a park. Although the new ideas sounded great they could not be put into place today. The idea of a Garden City is something that sounds nice, but it is not possible in society today. Today a city should reflect economic status, and in order to achieve this the city should be big, and convey an image of power. A city that has aspects of nature in it would not convey that image. That upkeep of a city of that kind would also be difficult. The do understand the author's point of view. The planners often times do not take into account the desires of the people. The town that I grow up in want to become more urbanized. In order to do this, they are building a large shopping center. This shopping center is located in the canyon rim. This canyon rim has been important the people for many years. We come to the area to walk, what bass jumpers, and enjoy the scenic views. This new shopping center took away this area. Many of the people
With the expansion in technology, children are hastily becoming more and more inactive. In the past century, kids would play outside from sunrise to sunset. Little did they realize, that playtime served as great daily exercise. Physical activity is a key necessity in keeping a healthy lifestyle. With the advancement of technology and the growing popularity of video games and television, fewer children are getting exercise. Stationary activities, such as video games and watching T.V., are keeping children inside and away from exercise. To blame just the kids for this lack of exercise would be wrong. The parents are the ones responsible for giving the children these games, but that is not all bad. Where it does turn bad however, is when the kids are given these games or televisions without a time restraint. Through research, they have found that 26% of children watch television for more than four hours a day. In efforts to encourage outside playtime for kids, Nickelodeon shut down programming daily from noon to 3pm. This seemed to be a great idea, but does it really help? Children are in school session Monday through Friday from 8am 3pm. The time Nickelodeon chose to go dark is the same time child...

Sidewalks an overlooked luxury, a path for everyone to take that makes their lives a bit easier. Sometimes I feel like a sidewalk, hilariously enough, but not because I am made of concrete, because it is a hand to hold through life or support through a hard time and that is what I have seen, my path. And now it is what I hope to help others find, I wish to be a path for the weary. We all know a person that is our sidewalk, our support from this jungle of a world. My support has always been my family, they are a very important aspect in my life. My family helped shape me into the “sidewalk” I try to be. That is why I would like to be support for another because I know the lost feeling and how fantastic it feels to take that weight off your shoulders with the help of a friend.
Over the past decades our culture has changes dramatically. To which our nation was once a physically active nation. Yet now it seems that society discourages physical activity. The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
Traffic engineers and planners need information about traffic. They need information to design and manage road and traffic system. They use the information for planning and designing traffic facilities, selecting geometric standards, economic analysis and determination of priorities. They use this to justify warrant of traffic control devices such as signs, traffic signals, pavement markings, school and pedestrian crossings. The also use this information to study the effectiveness of introduced schemes, diagnosing given situations and finding appropriate solutions, forecasting the effects of projected strategies, calibrating and validating traffic models.
It is not important a person’s culture, occupation, or gender, everyone must travel from one place to another. Between 1800 and 1900, the way Americans moved around their world changed drastically. In the early 1800 a two-wheeled walking machine was developed by Baron von Drais for transporting people around the royal gardens quicker. Later in the same century, Karl Benz designed the first automobile with the similar principle as the bicycle, to allow people to arrive at the desired destination faster. At the present time, cars and bicycles are a common type of transportation, however, they mutually share numerous variations and similarities.
As the result of urbanization, cities have more problems to overcome such as pollution, overpopulation, drug abuse, congestion, crime, poverty, traffic jam, slum areas, and many more. There must be something to solve these problems. Government and citizens should be involved because taking care of city problems can’,t be done entirely by government. The community can be even more successful because it deals directly with problem areas.
only thing that can be improved by the use of bicycles. There are several major
Although bicycles are known for being very convenient and economical, they can cause accidents on the road with other vehicles, and it can make driving next to bicycles a safety hazard. “But while bicycles are defined as vehicles by most state laws and have a legitimate right to the road, from a safety and operations perspective they are not the same as cars” (Sandt). Bicycles are physically and mechanically distinct from cars. According to Laura Sandt, bicycles have dissimilar weights and dimensions, travel speeds and stopping distances than cars and these factors need to be taken into account when roadways are being designed. Additionally, cyclists as a population are not similar as the car-driving population because some people may ha...
This led to many conversations (the kind you can only have with three and four year olds) regarding why people need to exercise, how the body works and why it is important for people of all ages to be in motion. For me, this is something that I will take away from this class that will last forever. We will follow close to the 1.61 mile route, but will stop about half way as that is where our neighborhood playground is located. We allow the children to play there for thirty to forty-five minutes and then walk the rest of the route back to the house.
When the planning of putting traffic lights and stop signs, you should look at the subdivision plan and figure out where all the buildings and schools are for the protection of students walking and riding home from school. In our plan that we have made, we will need traffic lights next to the school, so people will look out for the students going home. We will need a stop sign next to the park incase kids run out in the street. This will help the protection of the kids having fun. Will need a traffic light separating the mall and the store. This will be the busiest part of the town with people going to the mall and the store. And finally there will need to be a stop sign at the end of the streets so people don’t drive to fast and get in a big accident. If this is down everyone will be safe driving, walking, or riding their bikes.
