6,001,500,000, this is the estimated number of Bibles printed. The Bible took 1,600 years to write and consists of 66 books written by 40 different people at different times. It has been translated into over 1,000 different languages and is the best selling book of all time. And this brings us to the question; is the Bible really true? In 1952, Sanders, a professor of military history, created three tests: the internal test, the bibliographic test, and the external test. These tests are used to prove the authenticity and accuracy of any document. The first test we will use to verify the Bible is the internal test.
The internal test seeks to assess whether or not the document in question has any inconsistencies or contradictions within itself.

Over 4,000 different ancient Greek manuscripts of the New Testament have survived to our time, giving us plenty of chances to find errors or significant changes in the text. It was found that only minor mistakes occur (such as spelling and changes in phrasing) and we can confidently state that we are 99% sure that the copies of the New Testament we have today are the accurate to the originals. With less available copies of the Old Testament (due to the obvious shortage of printers in negative BC times) it is a bit harder to prove its authenticity. However what we do have proves to be incredibly consistent. For example two copies of Isaiah were found in the dead sea scrolls, of the 166 words in Isaiah 53, only 17 letters were found to be different. 10 of them were differences in spelling, 4 more were stylist changes like conjunctions, the remaining 3 made up the word light which was added to “they shall see” in verse 11 and does not change the meaning of the passage whatsoever. All this goes to show how laboriously the scribes of the Old Testament work to make sure that their handwritten copies were as accurate and reliable as they could be. The scribes and authors of the Bible believed it to be the very Word of God and were meticulous in their work, and …show more content…
For he was one who did surprising deeds, and a teacher of such people as accept the truth gladly. He won over many Jews and many of the Greeks. He was the Messiah. When Pilate, upon hearing him accused by men of the highest standing among us, had condemned him to be crucified, those who in the first place came to love him did not give up their affection for him, for on the third day, he appeared to them restored to life. The prophets of God had prophesied this and countless other marvelous things about him. And the tribe of Christians, so called after him, have still to this day not died out.” It is most widely believed that these statements in bold were added after and are not written by Josephus, however the rest of the paragraph is considered to be his. Looking past these biased statements he still makes clear in this writing that Jesus exists and even points out that he may have done miracles as the Bible says he did. He then goes even further to point out that Jesus was condemned by Pilate, and that he was crucified, both of these facts the Bible says to be true. The unbiased writings of Josephus help back up the Bible and help prove its authenticity, and it’s not the only writings that do so. Documents
He was well educated, fluent in both Hebrew and Aramaic and spoke but could barely write in Greek and Latin. By the age of 14, he was being consulted by high priests in the matters of Jewish law. He was a very intelligent, young man. He was a Jewish priest, a scholar, and a historian.
The Garden of Forking Paths is ultimately an explanation why an Allied assault on the Serre-Montauban Line was delayed five days in July of 1916. This explanation comes from Dr. Yu Tsun’s personal experience. It starts off with his plan to escape from Captain Richard Madden and his determination to inform the Leader of Germany of where the Allies were going to attack. Tsun gets an early start by taking a train. When he gets off, he gets directions to the home of Dr. Stephen Albert by a group of boys. Yu Tsun remembers a strategy of how to find the central courtyard of a specific type of maze. When he reaches Albert’s home, the gatekeeper lets Tsun in, assuming he was there to see the Garden of Forking Paths. He explains to Dr. Albert about how one of his ancestors, Ts’ui Pen’s manuscript is the labyrinth of the Garden of Forking Paths. When Captain Madden arrives, Yu Tsun shoots Dr. Albert and gets arrested. Sentenced to hang, Tsun is pleased because he got the message to the leader. He killed someone
Writings of historical scholars, Josephus, Aristotle, and Plato, to name a few, are taken as truth and fact, yet the writings of the Scripture are constantly disputed. Why? Perhaps because of the ethical imperatives imposed to which people do not want to adhere. Perhaps because of man’s ego and pride that disallows them to submit to a Higher Authority. Nonetheless, The Bible has been, and still remains, the most widely read and revered book of all
The study of textual criticism is important when talking about any historical manuscript or text. In particular, when talking about something with as much impact and influence as the bible, textual criticism is a necessary part of scholarship. Brad Ehrman does an excellent job in explaining the basics of textual criticism and how it can be used to determine the accuracy of biblical texts and manuscripts. His book, Misquoting Jesus, serves as a primer to the study of historical biblical manuscripts. As Ehrman states in his introduction, the thesis explained in the text is that biblical manuscripts have been changed throughout history, both intentionally and non-intentionally, and that those changes were affected by the attitudes and beliefs of the scribes.
The topic we learned that was similar to this was the discovery of ancient copies of bibles. There has been over twenty four thousand copies of bibles found by the archeological digs, and these facts support our reliability for the historical accuracy of the bible. The copies of the bible were found in forms of papyrus, stone carvings, and etc. This discovery supported not only the historical reliability, but the accuracy of the bible itself. There was more than twenty four thousand copies found, but the errors found all together was under one percent. I thought this was a pretty good evidence to use in apologetics because there was many authors and scribes writing the bible, but what they wrote was all the same thing. There can`t be a coincidence where everyone made up something random, and it all turned out to be the same idea.
“The King James Bible was 400 years old in 2011, and it remains one of the most favored translation used today” (“At 400, King James Bible still No. 1”). “Some statistics from a newspaper said, that out of the people polled thirty-one percent said the King James language was beautiful, and twenty-three percent said it was easy to remember” (“At 400, King James Bible still No. 1”). When the King James Bible was published in 1611 there were many ways it could have been improved. The King James Bible has had a huge impact on the world of today. The King James Bible was published by scholars that King James I gathered from 1604 to 1611. King James did this in order to create a
Questions of the Holy Bible’s authenticity has been interrogated since the beginning. Non-believers dispute parts or the entirety of the Bible’s actuality. Yet some believers question parts of the Bible, particularly the Gospels. Individuals are skeptic if the Gospels are historically reliable. Can we Trust the Gospels? by Mark D. Roberts was able to provide reliable evidence and reasons on why people can trust the Gospels. His book gives an overview on the subject of the gospel reliability.
In order to determine if the New Testament is God’s Word one must understand how the New Testament came together. It is very important to understand the terms, which make up the process and the physical existence of the New Testament and the Bible for that matter. When making reference to the Bible many people use different terms to mean the same thing.
Numerological patterns need no interpretation, their meaning is readily apparent (Holcombe 30). " When the Bible was written, the concomitant influence was from God and the Holy Spirit. This view of the origins of Biblical numerology is a strictly religious stand point.... ... middle of paper ...
It is often perceived that messiah would have the same meaning, but the word messiah has a huge complexity to it, due to the many beliefs about who is the messiah, that many scholars have a difficult time trying to form a definition. For this essay, messiah will be defined as a person that believes he has been appointed by god to redeem Israel and has an eschatological concept. Eschatological concepts were important for a messiah to have because the Jewish belief is that “salvation or the end-time was to be inaugurated by a messiah or some ‘messianic’ figure as the divine agent” (Horsley 7). Before the resurrection, the messiah has to restore the kingdom of god on Earth. Messianic claimants of the time were preaching their ideas of Israel being free of Roman rule, followers would take action against Rome, they could purify Israel before the day of judgement. These men were the leaders in the social-revolutionary
To begin, before a person can debate the validity of anything, they must first understand the topic they are debating. So is the case here. A person must first understand the Bible and its origins before they can try and prove or disprove it. The Bible itself is composed of 66 books divided int...
The contents of the Bible have dealt with controversy in regards to its inerrancy since publication, and will surely continue to. Historians progress to learn more about biblical stories in order to provide evidence for the reliability of information. Many believers today understand that not everything in the Bible has been factually proven. An outstanding topic many scholars pay attention to lies within the four gospels. The three synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, replay essentially the same story with minor inconsistencies, while John portrays Jesus in an entirely different way. The differences in each gospel are due to how each gospel entertains different portrayals of the life and understanding of Jesus himself, in order to persuade
There are around 24,000 total MSS for the New Testament. The next closest document in respect to MSS is the "Illiad" by Homer, with 643 manuscripts (McDowell 43). The textual reliability then continues with respect to the time interval between the original and the first known manuscript. The shorter the interval, the more reliable the text is. Homer's "Illiad" was written in 900 BC and the earliest copy was found in 400 BC.
We have many tools to assist us in discerning whether something is biblical, but the most important is prayer or talking to God. We must not be swayed by what is popular or easy, but stick to the truths of the Bible. It is also important to look at the historical context in order to discern what the Bible says and use that to classify something as biblical or nonbiblical. We shoud always read the surrounding text to ensure that we get the correct interpretation of the text. By using the thought experiment, we can be assured that we adher to the original text meaning and convey that to our current audience.
