Bewitched is important by the way in which it establishes and explores a discourse of modern, suburban life. This discourse however, directly explores tensions of the era in which it was produced. Its discourse - fantasy and its fantastical set ups are key towards unmasking "the conventionality of the everyday" (Spigel, 2001:123).
One thing that the fantastic sitcom does successfully is it diminishes the importance of suburban life and thus re-shapes our understanding of domesticity. Samantha struggles to come to terms with being a housewife and often uses her magic to conduct household chores. The mis-en-scene of the Stephenson’s living room is flooded with nice paintings, books, odd matching sofas and ironically, a menorah. The mis-en-scene functions more so as a back drop, rather than a textual function. This works in conjunction with the narrative situations – which feature ‘real’ problems. There is a general absence of a reliance on mod-cons and technology is rarely used by Samantha – the way in which she operates technology and appliances is a parody designed to familiarize the viewer with the drains of modern day life, …show more content…

Metz argues that the show is “constituted by narrative complexity”(Metz, 2007:13). Though, the series is problematic in the way in which each episode starts with harmony, which is then disrupted and eventually, replaced. The series is episodic - equilibrium is restored in all episodes. Bewitched therefore does not play with narrative it plays with genre, the "regulators of televisual narrative" (Morreale, 2002:104). The manner in which it plays with genre is essential in relation to discourse. The narrative is never disrupted - it is the discourse itself that is the disruption and if we were to "merely look at the sitcoms architecture, no sitcom can be transgressive". (Creeber, 2008:82).
