‘Betrayal’, A word that is harsh and yet it still exists in this world. Betrayal is a damaging force that leaves many peoples paths ruin. “The Wisdom of Eve” is a short story by Mary Orr, which is about how a friend betrays another friend. “I'm going on a trip. I’m heading to Reno to get a divorce… Eve had found the time to get engaged to a famous playwright. She’s going to marry my husband, Lloyd Richards” (Orr 295). People don’t expect someone who they care about or someone who cares about them to betray them. In the journal article “When Another Lesbian Betrays You”, by Assanti Ta’Shia declares that “Betrayal can slam us into an emotional prison that will take us years of therapy to get out” (1). Loss of confidence in knowing who can be trusted, emotional well being, and self- protection are what people feel after they’ve been betrayed. First of all, every human being needs to trust. Trust takes a lot to build, but at the same time it does take seconds to break. When being betrayed by someone they build trust with causes distrusts. “The Compass of Friendshp” is a book by William K. Rawlins, who discusses how a person betrays his friends friendship. “Most of us would agree that the loyalty and confidence of friendship is a scared of trust. Close friendship …show more content…
is one of the things that make life worth living. What kind of person will betray his friends trust” (Rawlins 3)? Anyone who has experience betrayal know that it is difficult to recover from what they experience. Additionally, betrayal can cause emotional well being. “You don’t know what I’ve been through with that girl. You can’t imagine what she’s said and done to me. How she lied to me and made a fool of me” (Orr 287). Betrayed by a friend or anyone they put their trust on can effect them by feeling hurt, anger, and emptiness. “Other friends’ stories suggest such emptiness, material deprivation, and constrained opportunities that time seems to burn upon [when they get betrayed]”(Rawlins 52). Anger builds up after the betrayal and loss is fully acknowledged. For several people that have experienced betrayal for the first time, anger is the first emotion they will feel and would want to retaliate to hurt that person who hurt them. Betrayal can shatter a person from the inside, making them feel hurt. According to Mary Orr, “so far as I’m concerned she can stand at the entrance until she turns into stature. I shan’t lift a finger to help her” (294). After being hurt, it does take time to heal. Finally, a person will become self- protective with their self after experiencing a betray.
They might find it difficult to ever trust anyone again. According to Asanti Ta’Shia, it’s convincible that betray could wound the “self esteem” along with becoming unable to have confidence to another human being (1). There is not a fast and easy way to get over being betrayed. It takes time to open up again, but till then they will continue to have a wall in between the other person and themselves. According to Mary Orr, “she had a chance, and she muffed it by her own conceit. She’ll never get another opportunity” (294). Being scared after being betrayed it makes that person think twice about being able to
forgive. In the end, betrayals the worst and dreadful thing any human being can think of doing. Trusting someone is like giving them your life. All of the secrets and emotions they shared with them can twist and turn in seconds and can be used against them. When trusting someone you are relaying on them to honor them.
All About Eve is based on a story written by Mary Orr. Mary Orr wrote “The Wisdom of Eve” in the International Cosmopolitan Magazine based on real life events. After Joseph L. Mankiewicz read the story, he immediately fell in love with it because it was his way of “settling a lot scores [with the theatre]” (Crowther). He bought the rights to the movie and began casting. According to Mankiewicz, casting for Margo Channing was the hardest; after a lot of thinking, Mankiewicz chose Claudette Colbert as Margo, but two weeks before shooting began Colbert was on bed rest due to an accident during the filming of another movie. Because she was the only available actress that could play the part well, Mankiewicz selected Bette Davis as the new Margo.
The feeling of having been betrayed by a trusted or important figure in your life can result in emotional damage, which can eventually lead to personal destruction. “Stone Angel” by Margaret Lawrence and “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, are two works of literature that put that very statement into context. Although, the theme of betrayal is evident in both pieces, the protagonists of the different plots – Hagar Shipley and Willy Loman – experience betrayal in two very different fashions. Hagar Shipley is destroyed by her loss of independence and Willy Loman is forced into taking drastic and unnecessary actions. Acts of betrayal are scattered throughout the lives of the two protagonists. Betrayal put them off the path of life on which they originally began, and drops them on a path of destruction, which in time leads to their premature end.
Another example of the betrayal of a friend occurs not too long after. While Vladek and his family are hiding in the attic bunker in the ghetto, they are forced to go out in search of food at night. One night while they are scavenging they find a stranger who wanders into their house. The stranger tells them that he has a wife and a baby that he needs to find food for and he only wandered into the house to rest for a moment. The refugees take pity on him and allow him to stay with them for a short while, despite their gut feeling...
In the essay “How to Be Dead and Not Care”, Thomas Nagel replies to Rosenbaum and Epicurus by bring up an example of being betrayed by a friend. For example: let’s say your best friend sleeps with your husband and you die not knowing that they did that behind your back when you were living. Thomas Nagel would say it harms you even if you never found out. However, Epicurus, Rosenbaum and I believe it doesn’t harm you, because you never experience the
A betrayal by someone who you trust emotionally impacts you in a variety of ways. Sinclair Ross’ short story The Painted Door prominently shows the reasons of why a person would choose to betray their partner. The story is set in an isolated farmhouse in the prairies where a married couple, named Ann and John lives. After John’s trip to his father’s house he arrives back home and sees that Ann has been unfaithful. Although people know the effects of betrayal they still carry out this act. The main reason that people betray loved ones is due to the fact humans yearn for companionship, crave the thrill of new experiences and desire change to keep them fulfilled.
Trust is a trait one should obtain for the people they know are the most honest. To trust someone means to put ones full confidence and reliability on an acquaintance such as someone one is close with. In The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Brutus, one of the leading characters put his complete trust in the people trying to tell him what he should believe. Brutus joined the conspirators to help take down Julius Caesar because he believed it was what was good for Rome based on what he was deceived. This resulted in the killing of Caesar and the death of himself and others. Not considering the right kind of trust in someone can lead to very troubling things. Cassius told a lie as if it was a truth so Brutus
Martial betrayal forms a central basis for the relations between the main characters of Abigail, John Proctor, and Elizabeth Proctor. John betrayed his wife by cheating with Abigail, and throughout the course of the play, he attempts to redeem himself. This brings up an interesting topic of whether cheating can ever be justified. Elizabeth feels partially responsible because she was cold to him, and she believes that it was her coldness that led her husband to betray her. However is there ever an excuse for cheating? Can cheating on one’s spouse be justified if one’s spouse is not loving and well treating of their spouse? Martial betrayal still is relevant today, it is a human flaw that will not simply just disappear from our society. Even prominent figures such as Bill Clinton have been accused of such actions and society still contains several such cases of adultery.
Failure can cause trust issues and other problems in the future, when early attempts don’t work out. In Taylor Perry’s movie, “Temptation”, it was about a young woman and a young man who had been best friends since they were kids. As time went by, they started off dating and eventually got married. According to Tyler Perry, there was temptation at the young woman’s job. It was a young man who was rich and had his own company. Therefore, he wined and dined her for a while to show her another side of life. After falling for her client, the young woman left her husband. Once she started living with the client he had introduced her to drugs, he started abusing her, and gave her a disease she could never cure. Long story short, this is a brief example of what can happen when you stop being loyal. The young man who remained loyal was happily remarried and reaped the benefits of being loyal, while the young woman was suffering from the consequences from being

In the writing by Mary Astell, Mary describes that women should strive for higher learning or knowledge instead of falling behind men when it comes to decision making. Mary is a well-educated woman herself and she could therefore see the injustice of the treatment to women during her time period a lot clearer than most other women. It became visible to her the lack of choice women were given, “A woman, indeed, can’t properly be said to choose; all that is allowed her, is to refuse or accept what is offered.” (Pg. 2422) In this line, Mary hints that women only have a choice between slim amounts of offerings for marriage. She is later seen saying if women were more knowledgeable they would likely hold a higher standard for themselves “If
Betrayal has been a problem for mankind for as long as mankind has existed, but what exactly is betrayal? Many authors, psychologists, and philosophers alike have tried to answer that very question with no success. Certain types of betrayal can be beneficial, but more often than not betrayal causes an unfortunate series of events to follow it. One of the greatest examples of this comes from Greek Mythology and the story of Jason and Medea. Jason and Medea lived together as a married couple and had children together, Jason then betrayed Medea by throwing her aside and claiming they were never married. As revenge Medea then killed their children and fled. There are several different types of betrayal. There is betrayal of/by society or the exectutives of the country, betrayal of/by those close to you, and betrayal of/by yourself.

This is due to the fact that Hamlet has become distrustful of the most important people in his life and so this sparks a question in those around him but also
