Diving Into Beowulf’s Strengths Most people typically characterize a warrior as brave, strong, and honorable, but Beowulf is so much more than what meets the eye. Beowulf, an epic poem by an unknown author, is about strength and reveals a strong mind and heart that gives you the true power to persevere. Primarily, the author uses a chronological sequence of events to illustrate Beowulf’s perseverance and strength as he confronts multiple monsters. Beowulf arrives in Denmark to defeat Grendel, but he is unaware that greater challenges lie ahead. Danes’ implore, “help again,. save us once more and again. we will reward you” (Beowulf lines 1376-1381). He is informed of sad news regarding his beloved home: “They came to Beowulf, and announced that his hall, his throne,. melted away in the dragon’s burning breath” (2324-2327). Although Beowulf’s won, he is still unable to rest due to the dragon burning down his village. Rather than complaining, Beowulf instead prepares even more to take on the unforgivable beast. Ultimately, Beowulf’s continuous battle efforts against overwhelming odds solidify his legacy and are supported by the author’s choice of a chronological sequence of events. To emphasize the theme, the author incorporates descriptive personification to highlight Beowulf’s relentless heart and determined mind. Fearlessly, Beowulf faces numerous challenges that would terrify most warriors, yet he embraces these obstacles with the mindset and perseverance of a hero. Analyzing the almighty Beowulf, our author inputs, “But Beowulf and fear were strangers, he stood ready to dive into battle” (1471-1472). He personifies fear and Beowulf in a drastic contrast to portray the courageous demeanor of Beowulf and illustrate how he is the farthest from being afraid.
