Are the heroic qualities possessed by Beowulf the same or different from the qualities we find in our hero’s today? I believe there are some heroes who still have somewhat of the same qualities as Beowulf. It usually just matters in what area they were born and raised in. Like someone who was raised to be a spoiled brat would become someone who always gets their way and if they didn't they would throw a big fit. Unlike someone who was born and raised in a giving family. They would be raised to realize helping others is the best thing to do even when you can’t get what you want or the way you want things.
Beowulf was a selfish sort of hero, he also loved having his revenge. Besides that he was young and cherished. He was also very
noticeable to his community. He didn’t seem like he was as nice as people thought he would be. He was sort of a stuck up sort of hero. “Hero’s” now a days are different most of them aren’t noticed by a community. Some heroes are different not all of them are police officers or firemen. Some policemen can be really irresponsible and may be racist/not as open minded as others. Some police officers have been on the news for doing the wrong things, so apparently sometimes the good guy might not be a good guy after all. Firemen and police officers are noticed by everyone because they help every time there is a major problem. But, who helps when you have the small problems? Like when you lock yourself out of the house? Or lose your dog that’s like part of your family? I believe everyone has an opportunity to be a hero. Not everyone has to have Beowulf’s qualities to be a hero. People around you every day can be heroes. Like what if a stranger helps you by helping pay for your bus fee? Or your car won’t start and someone stops to help you? What if you’re having the worse day ever and your anxiety is up and crazy and someone gives you a simple smile and it turns your day around? Like I said I believe everyone is able to be a hero. Most of the firemen, police officers, surgeons (and other heroes who are noticed in the community) don’t have the same qualities as Beowulf. Most of them are cherished by people in the community. But, they aren’t treated as royalty. Most of them don’t have revenge none of them go after big ugly monsters. They also aren’t self-centered. I believe one trait Beowulf and heroes now a days have in common is the fact that they care so much about the people they work with. I mean after Beowulf died he asked the Ex-king if he could take very good care of the army men he worked with. I believe heroes now a days have the same caring heart to do the jobs that they do. Besides that most of them work as a team and stick up for each other. So yes, I do believe that heroes now have the same qualities as Beowulf. Weather its bad or good qualities I don’t know. Sometimes it just depends on how the hero was raised. Sometimes heroes can also be the people who walk next to you everyday.
Although the main character in Beowulf is Beowulf himself, I believe that the single section which most concisely illustrates the heroic values in this poem occurs on pages 61 through 64 of the text, and is illustrated not by Beowulf's actions, but by Wiglaf's. Although Wiglaf is by nationality Swedish, he identifies himself as Beowulf's kinsman when he says "I did begin to help my kinsman." (Chickering 64)
Beowulf was a strong young man who was able to defeat a terrible monster known as Grendel. During this era in human history young men were expected to be far more durable and adequate compared to those of today. Those young men commonly had the dream of becoming king, defeating strong monsters, go on adventures, or even die a hero. All of which Beowulf managed to do making him a perfect role model for the young men at the time. The story of Beowulf truly captured all of the dreams of young men at the time and it was a perfect story for the time. Although times changed the dreams of the people never died, they were just advanced, edited and remade into new stories, better stories for better
For a hero Beowulf lacks a lot of morals and compassion. This is shown here
Beowulf exhibits many obvious heroic qualities, such as his strength and confidence in battle. These along with more subtle diplomatic actions serve to define him as both a great warrior and leader.
Beowulf is a great tale but as a person, he isn’t that all that people make him out to be. In his older years his need for attention and glory ended up with the death of him. He fought the dragon alone and in return, ended up killing the dragon, but also sacrificed himself. Even as he died he asked for one thing, his people to build him a memorial near the sea so everyone could see the person that he was. His need for attention, lack of planning, and need for glory caused him to be just a prideful man, not a
A hero not only needs to be physically outstanding, but he also needs to have integrity, moral values and needs to act without thinking in his own benefit. Beowulf has many characteristics of a hero but he also has some defects that make me think that he wouldn’t be considered a hero in today´s world. A hero concept evolves with a culture, Beowulf has many things that the Anglo-Saxons viewed as heroism but he misses many things that are important for a modern hero.
Beowulf shows physical strength in the story by defeating Grendel. In line 219 of Grendel’s mother, it tells how Beowulf killed her. “…cut it through, broke bones and all.” His strength is also told in line 213 of how he “lifted the sword that was so massive that no ordinary man could lift.” Beowulf’s determination, or his will to win, was throughout the story, even up until his death. A quote that describes this is, “…he cut the beast in half, slit it apart. It fell…”(line 185). He shows courage along with his cousin, Wiglaf, when they defeat the fire dragon. In line 189 it says, “…their courage had killed it, two noble cousins had joined in the dragon’s death.”
There are many traits that are possessed by those who seek heroism. Whether it is in real life or in fiction, every hero desires these character traits in the past, present, and future. IN my opinion, the two traits that are most prominent in the poem Beowulf are bravery and goodness.
Beowulf is a good example of a courageous and strong hero. He shows all of
Beowulf displayed great courage and honor throughout his journeys and battles; he was an epic hero. An epic hero is a person who is viewed as larger than life and possesses values of a certain society. From the time of Beowulf’s battle with Grendel to his brawl against the dragon, he has showed everyone what being an honorable hero looks like. His heroism is revealed through both youth as a young warrior and wisdom as a reliable king. He never backed down and didn’t give up when situations were tough. Beowulf had obligations to fulfill and went about every aspect of his life with courage and strength. He cared for his people and was willing to take on anyone that threatened them or his kingdom. He sincerely was the hero of his time.
He showed great courage, strength, leadership and intrepidness. Beowulf defeated a beast that swooped up an entire room of people and ate them. He took his men on a dangerous voyage to Grendal’s deep, dark lair. Beowulf also demonstrated strength that a normal man couldn’t when he lifted a sword crafted for giants. Although Beowulf was an Anglo-Saxon hero centuries removed, his heroic attributes still appeal to heroes today. Although Beowulf has super strength, he still shows courage, initiative, selflessness, and desire to make the world a better place just like heroes of
What are the qualities of an epic hero? An Epic hero is a hero on a
The story of “Beowulf” begins at a time where a great hero is needed. This is where Beowulf’s character takes the initial place of an epic hero. In the first story of “Beowulf,” Beowulf takes on the responsibility of destroying the great threat, Grendel. This immediately shows the courage, honor and bravery of Beowulf. When Beowulf sailed to the Danes to kill Grendel, he was not searching for money, he was simply putting the Geats lives before his own. Beowulf was not yet
ZOOM Beowulf has epitomized what being a hero looks like for hundreds of years. Beowulf is a hero because he's brave, caring, and inspirational. He's brave because he encounters many beasts that no other man has been able to kill. He's caring because he helps his neighbors in Denmark without any obligation. He's inspirational because he inspires Wiglaf to help defeat the dragon and rule Gateland.
Many ancient writers used epic poetry to tell tales of intense adventures and heroic feats. Beowulf was written by a monk in Old English, and has been around since 975 a.d.. The events in the poem take place in the late fifth century after the Anglo-Saxons had started their journey to England. The book Beowulf is considered an epic poem but, what is an epic poem? It is a long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet Epic heroes possess qualities that mere mortals lack.
