Many ancient writers used epic poetry to tell tales of intense adventures and heroic feats. Beowulf was written by a monk in Old English, and has been around since 975 a.d..
The events in the poem take place in the late fifth century after the Anglo-Saxons had started their journey to England. The book Beowulf is considered an epic poem but, what is an epic poem? It is a long, narrative poem that is usually about heroic deeds and events that are significant to the culture of the poet Epic heroes possess qualities that mere mortals lack. Bravery beyond compare, superhuman intelligence, strength or skills and a driving desire to find success. The epic hero often battles for good, or accomplishes a set of tasks to complete an important goal. Often this hero comes by his qualities as a birthright, sometimes having links to gods or other epic heroes. Beowulf exhibits these qualities in the Old English epic poem named after him. They provide the common people with a sense of security and they display honor in every act. Beowulf is willing to put himself in danger, and he accepts the challenge of fighting the monster, Grendel, for the honor of helping the Geats and to honor his father who pledged his allegiance to Hrothgar after a feud had been settled. Beowulf is also described as being honorable and virtuous. This characteristic comes into play many times, but it is most evident in Beowulf's commitment to fighting Grendel in hand-to-hand combat rather than using man-made weapons. Beowulf reasons that Grendel does not use weapons, and so he will likewise eschew any armament besides his own strength.
