Manufacturing Process Geofoam is any material or product that has a closed-cell structure that was created either in a fixed plant or in situ by an expansion process. Although most geofoam materials are polymeric (plastic) in composition, other materials such as Portland cement concrete (PCC) or glass have been and are used. Most geofoam materials are polymeric with polystyrene foams being the most common. The two types of polystyrene foam are expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS). They are collectively referred to by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) D 578 ( ) as "rigid cellular polystyrene" (RCPS). EPS is a polymeric foam that is inherently white in colour and can be found in some familiar consumer products such as coffee cups and cushion packaging. EPS and XPS …show more content…
Benefits of utilizing an EPS-block geofoam embankment include: (1) ease and speed of construction, (2) placement in adverse weather conditions, (3) possible elimination of the need for preloading, surcharging, and staged construction, (4) decreased maintenance costs as a result of less settlement from the low density of EPS-block geofoam, (6) reduction of lateral stress on bridge approach abutments, (7) use over existing utilities which reduces or eliminates utility relocation, (8) excellent durability, and (9) ability to be recycled. In a soil removal and replacement situation without the use of surcharging, the use of EPS-block geofoam may result in cost savings compared to other types of lightweight fill materials and conventional fill materials because the density of geofoam is 1/10th to 1/30th of the density of foamed concrete, 1/55th to 1/145th of the in-place density of boiler slag, and 1/100th of the density of conventional granular fill
The most economical method for ground improvement is aggregate piers. Before aggregate piers were used, engineers had to replace the weak soil with an engineering fill in order to use shallow foundations, but in some cases (load is very high) they had to use deep foundations, which is much more expensive. By using aggregate piers, we can now use shallow foundations in marginal soil without having to replace it. By using compacted aggregate to create stiff pier element, aggregate piers help to increase the bearing capacity, liquefaction resistance, shear strength, rate of consolidation and it reduces settlement.
With all of the products that Topps produces, there are of course many raw materials that contribute to each entertainment product. In fiscal year 2002, Topps spent $6,395 on their raw materials as compared to $2,860 spent in 2001. The company’s sports cards are the most popular and require a few materials. Film must be on hand constantly, as photographs must be taken of each athlete before computerized technology adds graphic designs to be put on the cards. Other materials needed for their collectible trading cards include large sheets of paperboard for the photos to be printed on, and plastic coating or foil lining to add additional interest to each card. These substrates are purchased in sheet form from specialty printers and are added to the paperboard before being placed on a pressing machine that cuts the paperboard into the individual cards. Raw materials for their confectionary products include many different types of sugars and both natural and artificial flavorings to be mixed in large vats before being processed through another pressing machine which cuts the candy into individual pieces. Eventually, each confectionary product is wrapped in paper or plastic to secure freshness. Paper and adhesives are the primary materials used for the sticker collections produced by Topps. Inks and dyes are used on all products in some shape or form whether it be on a wrapper or on the collectible trading cards being printed up.
In order to fully understand fluoride, and it's benefits, one must first have an adequate understanding of what the element fluorine is. According to Merriam-Webster, fluorine is a nonmetallic halogen element that is isolated as a pale yellowish flammable irritating toxic diatomic gas. And fluoride is basically the ionic form of the element, fluorine. It's essential role is to help the development of healthy teeth and bones. Fluoride is a trace mineral, meaning that our diet needs it in small amounts. According to the RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance), the adequate intake of fluoride for men is 4 mg per day, while women can ingest 3 mg per day, and children 4-8 years of age can consume 2.2 mg per day. We can get fluoride from many reliable sources. Some food sources include, fish, legumes and whole grains. But, nothing seems to scream fluoride quite like municipal water supply,
Polyurethane foam is typically used to make spray foam insulation. It is a superior alternative to runs of spun fiberglass sheeting used to weatherproof walls ceilings and attics. The foam creates a barrier to prevent heat from escaping during the winter, and it also keeps homes much cooler in the summer. Spray foam offers much better sealing, because it can fit down into all little nooks and crannies. It prevents even the smallest drafts due to this unique ability to fill the small spaces. The foam comes as closed-cell or open-cell types, and the choice depends upon your application. Closed-cell has a higher R value but is more expensive than open-cell.
The recycling process of plastic begins at the recycling department wherever it may be located. The plastics are categorized according to plastic type. Plastic is then separated by color, the plastic is sterilized then crushed and chopped into plastic flakes. The plastic flakes are then melted and stirred. As a result of the stirring and melting a thick liquid is produced. This thick liquid is processed and spun into fiber strands that could be used for making fleec...
Over the course of the past 60 years, an increasing amount of the current population is using plastic and reusable products to try and reduce the amount of waste that is being thrown away. Bisphenol A (BPA) is used to manufacture polycarbonate #7 plastic which have help strengthen plastic bottles, food containers and epoxy resins (University of Minnesota, 2008). BPA is used in a range of products from every day plastic beverage containers and plastic dinnerware, to compact disks, impact-resistant safety equipment, automobile parts, and toys (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). The CDC (2013) also states that BPA epoxy resins are used in the protective linings of food cans, in dental sealants, and in other products (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013).

Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most commonly used polymers which can be identified into two plastic identification codes: 2 for high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and 4 for low density polyethylene (LDPE). Polyethylene is sometimes called polyethene or polythene and is produced by an addition polymerisation reaction. The chemical formula for polyethylene is –(CH2-CH2)n– for both HDPE and LDPE. The formation of the polyethylene chain is created with the monomer ethylene (CH2=CH2).
Polymer-Polyethylene is partially crystalline as well as amorphous because it has crystalline and amorphous regions. Also it has linear chains so this is the simplest structure compared to a branched or network chain. This can be of an advantage to it over other types of materials as its good toughness and elongation makes it very significant in the engineering industry as it can be moulded or extruded into shape...
Now days, companies are searching for new ways of gathering data so that they can get useful data in order to make well informed decisions regarding the market they are operating in. Google analytics is considered one of the best tools offers extensive amount of data to business owners for free. However, the success of business is highly depended on how well they can arrange data and customize their collected data corresponded to their business priorities. Google analytics provides beneficial information for companies regardless of their extent of operation.
Some of the new harder liners are effective but are costly to install. Geotextile and other synthetic bunker liner materials are also being used. However, it is difficult to manage around this type of liner, which often becomes exposed. Turf liners provide another lining option to help cut down on washout and sand contamination. The turf liners have a finite life span, but are a fairly inexpensive option to prevent rock contamination.
... although we may never be able to understand exactly what soil failures can occur when a natural disasters take place, as time goes on and testing instruments and materials advance we will hopefully have a better understanding of what we can do to avoid soil failures and come up with a better and more sufficient method of improving the soils structure and strength permanently. While researching the information for this report I feel I have a much better understanding for construction geo-technics and foundations especially regarding the deformation, liquefaction and pile information related to this specific event. I hope to carry the information I have learned from this event into the construction field and apply them towards an authentic project that’s taking place and know that the information, regarding soils, I have given input on will be precise and accurate.
This is flexible film that has light transmission qualities similar to glass. This material has been used extensively in Japan. While polyethylene sheets can be wide, PVC is narrow which a disadvantage in covering greenhouses is.
