Ever heard of the movie Bend it like Beckham? I have seen the movie more than once before I had to watch it for class. This is since I actually own the movie, and also because I enjoy football. The movie is about an Indian girl who is not allowed to play on an all-girls football team, even though she is out of high school. While she is playing for fun another girl watchers her, and convinces her and the coach that she needs to join the team. While she hides it from her family, she also has to deal with her feeling for her coach. The movie talks about the culture, different themes, and how the two families are similar, but also different.

A part of the Indian culture that I noted as different from my own culture was the weddings. There were people around all the time, and also the weddings are very different. The Indian culture has an engagement party rather than a bridal shower. Everybody came to the house of the brides rather than renting a place for the engagement party. Another thing that I noted that was different was that the way that they dressed was different. The women were not allowed to show their legs, they had to have pants on, or capris. It took Jess a while for her to put shorts on, and for her to feel comfortable about them.
I did not know much about the Indian culture beside what I have seen on television. I knew that they dressed different, but that was really it. I have seen this movie before, but never fully paid attention to the culture until now. It is quite different then my own culture. I like some of the ways that the Indian culture is different, but at the same time I like my own

Das shows a stereotypical American flaw where she did not care about her children and went and openly started discussing her personal life and also in the process she found guilty for disrespecting the country and the cultural believes, where she believes it or not she still got the Indian heritage in her. Lahiri’s proves us that Mrs. Das is a messy; lazy and over all a bad parent. She simply has no concern for the environment, as she was completely fine after dropping rice snacks all over the floor riling the local wildlife. Mrs. Das simply represents what’s called “Ugly American” who always stands out in the crowd for her own needs and is very narrow minded and only cares about her self. This showed a complete lack of understanding among them shows a complete difference between the family and culture.
Culture is the one of the main reason, which makes American and Indian life styles totally different from each other. Both cultures have some advantages and disadvantages.
The first difference between American culture and Indian culture is marriage. A wedding is a great social event in our society, which establish a new bond between two individuals and families.
