Imagine walking into class on time everyday and feeling caught up on work. All of the lessons make sense, and being on time feels great. The grades are where they’re supposed to be, and stress isn’t the main concern. There are many factors to being successful in high school. Making sure to stay on top of attendance and trying to not be absent is sometimes difficult. Focusing on school work is also difficult at times. Getting stressed out can also alter one’s grades. Staying on top of school work and knowing what’s going on is the best feeling. Feeling lost and confused isn’t the best. In order to be successful in high school, freshmen should put in time and effort, try not to get stressed out, and try not to be absent.

In my own life, I realized that completing school work takes time and effort. It’s important to get work done, and every point counts. It all eventually adds up when a student doesn’t do their work. If a student doesn’t have the time now, such as playing video games or doing a sport, then they won’t have the time later. I have a lot of free time on my hands. Some days I don’t have free time, so I have to make time. Priorities and activities are time consuming, but work will have to be done at some point. This shows how students will have to find time and effort to do their homework. Homework is time consuming, but completing it is worth the points. Keeping up with homework keeps up the grade. If a student spends most of their time on games, sports, or other activities, they will have to balance out the activities and school work. I get stressed out easily, and a lot from school work. Stress is not an easy thing to deal with, and I find ways to deal with stress. I tell my parents so that they are aware. I meditate; meditating is difficult at times, but it takes practice. I also take warm/hot showers. Finally, I keep my phone across the room. One time I got extremely stressed from my history and english project. I was crying and trying to do work, but I couldn’t focus. At one point I emailed one of my teachers, and we talked about it. Telling my parents that I’m stressed makes it so that they don’t bother me, especially my sister. People bothering me gets me distracted. Next, I meditate so I can clear my mind. Meditation improves focus and stress management. Meditating in a calm, clean, room improves better meditation, and concentration. I take warm/hot showers to ease off stress, and tensed muscles. Finally, I keep my phone across the room when I’m doing work, so that I don’t get distracted from social media. Doing these helps me focus and do my work. Talking to someone will also help vent out one’s thoughts; If school work is getting to the head, talk it out with someone. Also, talking to the teachers and asking if the student could get an extension to some work could help ease off stress too. Focus is key. How to Deal With StressMany students go to school full time, and hold a part time job to earn money for school. Most students have about four classes, and each of the teacher’s of these classes gives an average of about an hour of homework each night; that averages out to four hours per night of homework, plus a part time job. School causes a lot of students stress because there are so many things to do, and so little time to do it. Stress is a normal part of everyone’s life; and is not a disease. It is not necessarily good or bad; however, reactions to stress can be harmful. Lack of time puts the stress on many students, and causes students to often procrastinate because they are constantly trying to meet deadlines and they don’t have the time to work on their assignments. Many students feel their grades are important; they need plenty of time to work on their work so they can do good. I can relate to them because if I get a low grade I get disgusted because I put a lot of time and effort in doing that assignment. But I think that a lot of the stress from school is caused, not only by the teachers, but also from the students to do well. Students put too much stress on themselves. A student just has to learn to manage their time well and just do as good as possible. Stress management involves the effort of that student to make emotional and physical changes.

In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
They never come to school, or try to finish their work on time because they are busy talking or playing on their phone. Giving limited time would resolve this issue and make them actually do their work, so they won’t get a zero on it. When a student is slacking off, they shouldn’t be given extra time to slack off more. Not given extra time to work on something certainly helps the student and the teacher. On the contrary, other believe that a student should be given more time because they have other activities to do.
My life was made less demanding by focusing, understanding that having friends does not make a difference, and simply having a great time. Everyone lives and adapts however, just the most grounded and smartest will survive. One ought to concentrate on focusing as opposed to stressing over stressing. Are the new standards and expectations the world has for teenagers really creating monsters? The amount of stress that is put on students these days between trying to balance school, homework, extra curricular activities, social lives, sleep and a healthy lifestyle is being considered a health epidemic (Palmer, 2005). Students are obsessing over getting the grades that are expected of them to please those that push them, and in return, lose sleep and give up other aspects of their lives that are important to them, such as time with friends and family, as well as activities that they enjoy. The stress that they endure from the pressures of parents, teachers, colleges, and peers has many physical as well as mental effects on every student, some more harmful than others. The extreme pressure on students to get perfect grades so that they will be accepted into a college has diminished the concept of actually learning and has left the art of “financing the system” in order to succeed in its place (Palmer, 2005).
Knowing how to handle stress by using some strategies like deep breathing, yoga and meditation will help us bring back our mind and body in a state of balance since they are considered as effective techniques for stress management. Also, connecting face-to-face with other people, accepting one’s strengths and weaknesses, seeking help from others and having strong communication with our family and friends are just some ways to have a good emotional health. Being stressed out is something that comes very easily for me since I am a Pre-Nursing major, have two jobs, and am in a sorority.
Tired, stressed, and overworked after a long day of school is something that’s ignored when it comes to students of all ages. Homework provides a heavy load that can add additional stress and time on a student’s shoulders. Schools should be making sure that students are receiving enough work throughout the day, to make sure kids don’t have the worry of homework when school is over. Students who receive lots of homework, may not have enough time to enjoy their families as much in the evenings, including time to enjoy themselves, watch movies, play around, and just being a kid.
