German Broadcaster Accused of Being Racist at the Royal Wedding
ZDF, a German public broadcaster continues to receive heavy criticism for showing racism in their media coverage of the royal wedding. Viewers questioned the way the ZDF commentators described the bride actress Meghan Markle along with the couple’s guests. The commentators often used the word “exotic” and were, in fact, overly fascinated with the bride’s black hair.
Thus, sparking another hot debate on racial discrimination by the media. The other media outlets are condemning the broadcasting company for their obvious racism and lack of sensitivity in the matter. Social media users found ZDF a racist and continue to point out their views online.
Meanwhile, ZDF, who is currently

Another commentator answered saying that she’s wearing a curly hair that appears to be de-curled which is probably similar to Meghan’s. Other comments describe the black choir as singing beautifully black. Some even viciously compared Meghan to their guests, Victoria Beckham and Amal Clooney, stating that all of them already had successful careers before they married their popular husbands.
Nicola Erdmann of Die Welt said that ZDF’s airtime was completely filled with uncalled for remarks about Meghan’s heritage that were questionable. It was clear that they had no respect for the people who were involved in the royal wedding. Josh Groeneveld and Lennart Pfahler from Germany’s Huffington Post pointed out how the broadcaster never grew tired of highlighting that Meghan Markle is black.
According to ZDF, they are taking the criticisms about their commentating in a serious manner. They said that ZDF received a number of responses from viewers but they also got praises as well. ZDF received criticisms on Twitter along with dozens of emails and calls from viewers commenting on the different aspects of their reporting according to their press spokeswoman. In the email statement, they did not apologize for any of their
This quotation is taken from a Hollywood film, but has a tendency to ring true in legal disputes in Canada involving minority groups. Racism as a component in the Canadian societal context has prevented the realization of truth and justice throughout history. For instance, Donald Marshall Jr. endured a wrongful conviction as a result of racism in the criminal justice system. While this dilemma has proved to be most difficult for minority groups to overcome, critical race theory, as implemented by defence lawyers in R.D.S. v. The Queen, has allowed for the realization of racism as truth in Canadian society and provides a tool for minority groups in future legal battles.
not racist but ‘’ by Anita Heiss is an anthology of poems reflecting the writer personal experience and thoughts as a proud, strong, contemporary Australian woman with Aboriginal identity.
“vulnerable to manipulate” and that it is “more often than not a willful ignorance and acceptance of stereotypes.” Bissoondath’s article discusses through examples of two men who are very friendly, who make unconscious insensitive remarks that are based on stereotypes. He also goes on to describe
In the article “The Good, Racist People” by Ta-Nehisi Coates, discusses an event which resulted in Forest Whitaker being accused of shoplifting. What could possibly be a reason to assume Whitaker, a famous actor, of shoplifted? From Coates’ point of view (along with many others) they want to believe that this encounter was a misunderstanding that had nothing to do with race. Whitaker was accused of shoplifting and then was frisked, based only on his appearance. Coates then goes on to claims that the owner’s apology argued that the incident was a “‘sincere mistake’ and how the worker was a ‘decent man’ who was ‘just doing his job’ ”. (par. 3) In this quote we see an excuse to justify this event. In which Coates want to believe the apology and

According to the Oxford Dictionary privilege is a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group (Oxford Dictionary, n.d.). Furthermore if you add white to privilege you get white privilege which highlights the societal privileges granted to those who are white particularly in Western culture. In the novel Ceremony by Lesli Marmon Silko captures white privilege through the highlighted differences between whites and Native Americans. The narrator Tayo is aware of the privileges that whites have in comparison to Native Americans. Tayos awareness of racism is identified by his examination of the U.S. Army uniform, his analysis of Floyd Lee, and his inspection of Leroy 's truck.
Cyrus was the host 2015 VMAs and she did a racist performance of using black culture, a popular, trending culture in America, to promote herself as “wild and dangerous” by using black people as “props” for butt slapping and twerking (Makarechi 2013). Therefore, Manji turned her acceptance speech toward Cyrus by calling her out on her liberalist discussion about her on media a few days earlier. Cyrus had stated that Manji should blame herself for not being nominated as the best music video of the year along with Taylor Swift and other artists (Feeney 2015). Manji pointed out how the entertainment industry chose white artists to win awards and ignored nonwhite artists even though their music was also very popular and well-deserving to received awards as well. Furthermore, Manji pointed out that if Cyrus was going to enjoy black culture, she should care about the black people who created that culture as well. Cyrus, on the other hand, refused to give a response (Feeney 2015). Hence, in summary of what Wiley thinks, she stated, “’[White feminism] thinks twerking is a revolution on Miley but wants to know why Nicki just won’t respect herself though’” (Button Poetry
She shares this news by writing “this week, when the internet learned that a black woman had been cast in a new play billed…” Penny didn’t say the actresses name which is Noma Dumezweni by the way, she only made it clear the actress is black. The message of not freaking out about how a black actress is going to play a role which has previously been played by white women is an important one and Penny is right to share that with her audience. Her essay wants people to adapt and understand that a change is happening and that it’s time to start showing actors and actresses who are underrepresented the attention they deserve. The way Penny went about sharing this message was contradicting to her overall point of the
All through time, the world has been racist and intolerant of people different from themselves. Countless millions have suffered due to the bigotry of people that couldn't understand change or differences among one another. There was a time when any soul that wasn't blue eyed and blonde haired in Germany, anyone with darker skin where immediately classed as inferior and not human. Even now, when you are not aware, racism is still a considerable problem. But sometimes it isn't one person being racist against another, but rather one person being racist against them self. The movie crash shows good examples of how racism against oneself, caused by fear and misunderstanding, is just as malevolent and evil as racism against another person. Fear is what makes people act racist. Farhad is one of many examples in the movie of a person who recognizes his own race and paralyzes himself through his own fear. Farhad believes that since he is Persian he is immediately being persecuted against and cheated. He flips out at the gun shop when the owner was insulting him which just furthers his fear of Americans. After the events on 9/11, which are referenced a lot in the movie, Farhad thinks that anyone who is Middle Eastern isn't welcome in America. Even after the gun shop owner was rude; his shop was destroyed by racist people who hated him. It is this same fear of being cheated because of his race that makes him very untrusting to people he doesn't know. He calls a lock smith to come fix his door because it won't lock. He immediately thinks that Daniel is trying to cheat him and steal money from him just because of his past endeavors.
After reading this essay a few times. I consider this piece does help to highlight that racism in America as being wrong; nevertheless, I do not believe that there is a considerable deal of significance for this narrative taking place on Independence Day. If this story would have happened on any other day would anything changed; nevertheless, the only thing that might have changed is that they probably would not have gone into the ice cream parlor. No matter, when they would have taken this trip to Washington, D.C., the result would have had been the same. Both of the parents planned to take this trip as the outcome of Phyllis being not permitted on the senior class trip; therefore, the parents decided to take all of their children to Washington,
Racism is a theme seen throughout all history. Not just one group has been affected by it in one way or another, but many groups if not all have experienced it. In the following we will explore racism in history.
Racism: a Short History George Fredrickson makes an argument ultimately against the dichotomy between civilization and savagery, specifically the resurgence of ethnoreligious bigotry that, according to him, replaces 20th century race theory in order to justify continued inequities and sociopolitical oppression worldwide in Racism: A Brief History. His book delineates the rise of modern race theory, beginning in Medieval Europe and synthesizing an explanation for the existence and success of the overtly racist regimes, the United States, South Africa, and Nazi Germany. Fredrickson cautions, however, that racism can easily become interchangeable with religious bigotry when facing corporatism that aims to alienate, marginalize, and devalue human beings as mere consumers with little agency or any collective sense of identity. Racism's ultimate goal, according to Fredrickson, is to establish a permanent hierarchal order that "has two components: difference and power." Fredrickson's analysis is probably one of the most direct and functional definitions of racism that I have run across in a while.
Despite many progressive changes, racism is still a major issue. No one is born racist, racism is taught and it is taught in popular culture. Younger generations are exposed to racism through popular culture; one of the many mediums in which racial stereotypes are still supported. Matt Seitz, in his article, “The Offensive Movie Cliche That Won’t Die” claims that metaphorically, in popular culture cinema, African-Americans are mentors of a white hero, but beneath the surface, it is racially offensive towards these mentors because they are still considered servants of whites. Michael Omi, in “In Living Color: Race and American Culture” adds to the claim of Seitz that racial issues in our society brought on by the media and popular culture. He
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however what is considered beautiful by some is not considered as beauty when discussing diversity within the media. Society is based on criticism of judging one’s characters body, shape and or race/ethnics background. In the media the society only sees one type that is only focused on perfection to the mind; however within the United States, it is very typical in that the media lacks ethnic representation, cultural identity and gender inequalities. There are no ethnic representation when it comes to the media world and that the media has been trained to believe that the ethnic groups are not valuable. African Americans and Hispanics writers are the minority group when it comes to a social group. According to journalist Prince and Television critic Deggans “CNN , let go one of its most high-profile anchor of color, Soledad O’Brien, replaced her with a white man, Chris Cuomo. Wolf Blitzer gave up one of his hours to another white man, Tapper. Though Zucker met with both National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalist to try and address their concerns, there has been no overt sign from CNN that it is bringing on any more anchors of color, ”(Mirkinson p.1).
Most of the audience on this radio show were white and male. Most of the callers have spent their lives walling themselves off from any real experience with blacks, feminists, lesbians or gays. Rush Limbaugh tells his audience “what you believe inside, you can talk about it in the marketplace.” Unfortunately, what’s inside is then mistaken for what’s outside, treated as empirical and political reality. Most of the talks on the radio were racist against the blacks.
