They risk their lives each and every day on duty to preserve the principles in which this country was founded. The selflessness of these men and women stem from the legacy left behind by the Veterans since the beginning of the United States Military. Stories passed down from generation to generation remind us of the hardships Veterans have gone through. We are reminded of the lives we lost, of those who gave their life protecting our nation. We are reminded of the oppression and fear people experience in other parts of the world. But it is through their stories that we are taught the lessons of courage and dedication. We are taught to stick by our comrades, supporting them through any hardship in life. We are taught the act of fighting for what we believe in. The Veterans not only provide motivation and influence for men and women who choose to serve this country, they also provide morals for the people. For people like me, the Veterans have taught me to have courage and determination to stand up and fight for what I believe in. They taught me to never abandon my comrades in times of peril. The Constitution is composed of 3 major parts. The first of which is the preamble. As the opening statement of the Constitution it outlines the goals the American people have for the country. In the preamble the people are assured the laws of the land would apply to all and be fair to all by this line “establish justice” (Doc 1). Peace and order in the nation along with the providing of defence for the people of America are also promised by the line “insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense.” (Doc 1). People were also assured their well being and their freedom as long as they lived in the law,Page 42R “promote the general, and secure the blessing of liberty to ourselves and our posterity” (Doc 1). The preamble sets the tone for the rest of the document and declares the document the “...Constitution for the United States of America.” (Doc 2)
When you look into veterans eyes, you can see several things that are important. The pride shines through, the pride of serving ones country, and the dedication to protect other peoples freedom even it if requires paying the ultimate price. These men and women give their lives to give us our freedom. As a one of the many individuals that they are protecting it is vital that we see that pride and appreciate where it comes from.

...earns huge amounts of respect from people. The government doesn’t provide much aid for military veterans, but the respect one gets is amazing. Many people in America send money, cloths, and letters to our troops overseas in in other countries. Plus, when they get released from the military, as long as they aren’t diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, they can get a job right away and can even start a family.
America’s veterans should be honored because they have suffered through so many hardships that others could not and have not survived, and they did it for their country that they loved and still love today.

As men and women serve this country we often forget the importance of what they did and how we give back to them for what they have experienced. As time goes, the understanding of the day has changed as well. Much like the original concept of the Purple Heart being an award given for valor and merit before transitioning later to a medal for wounded service members, Veterans Day originated with the same concept as today’s Memorial Day. Many kids see "super heroes" a man wearing a mask or a cape, but the real superheroes are the ones wearing a full on camouflage suit and a helmet. Veterans are actually better than superheros, they don't tell you they are veterans they are veterans unless you ask, they aren't boastful. They do take pride in what they do so they perform it at their 100%, but what I really admire is that they don't ever expect anything in return. A person that has earned the title of veteran is an American Hero, simple as that. The top three qualities that stand out to me when reflecting on veterans are selflessness, courage, and commitment. I come from a long line of military veterans on all sides of my family. Writing this essay is very easy when I think about those family members. However, the most important point of this essay is to address how ALL Americans should recognize our veterans as being our real life super heroes. What they do for us as civilians is, in my opinion, the definition of heroism. Veterans don’t stop giving of themselves when their service is done. The AMVETS and other veteran organizations continue to give back by volunteering, helping those in need, and of course, providing scholarship opportunities like this one.
The ideal of American citizenship was not only if you were legal in America, but the ideal that you have the values and rights of a citizen. Unregulated capitalism and the ultimate change in government regulations in big business led to a change in the ideal of citizenship. With the start of big business in America the theory of unregulated capitalism was tested for the first time. Many people have asked the question, and many others have been asked, ‘What is the greatest country in the world?’ Or, if you live in America, ‘Why is America the greatest country in the world?’ Many people answer this by saying things such as freedom, our education, diversity, etc., while others may say the people who live here, namely, Americans. Yet they seem to forget about the thousands, if not millions, of illegal immigrants that are living in our country. Are they Americans just because they are living in our country? Our federal government does not agree, which is why we have several laws concerning the deportation of illegal immigrants. Others, who see past the simple idea of living here as a means of being an American, may say that your characteristics help to define you as an American. Yet the most agreeable answer would be a combination of the two. A veteran that died for the sake of Canada's freedom. A veteran that bravely came forward when everyone else backed out to save their lives. A veteran that was once a great father, a supporting son and most importantly a genuine friend. People think that going to war is just signing up for suicide, but all the veterans in the world made a choice. This choice allowed YOU to live safely in a liberated country. The soldiers fought and sacrificed their lives for our happiness, our rights and our freedom. I still remember walking over deceased bodies, over great friends and enemies of mine. Over those innocent people who didn't deserve to die. The sound of mothers' screams when they knew that their children were not going to come back alive, newborns wailing for their parents and the sound of bombs flying over heads of the innocent are still fresh in my mind. I can still see the lives of blameless children flashing before my eyes. Seeing young ones holding newborns, school children with no school and wealthy kids being named as orphans shouldn't be an issue in our world. What did they do? Is going to school and having a family a crime? Just imagine this as your reality while being a soldier. Seeing your family and friends being slaughtered, guiltless children being tortured and risking your life and sanity to go out and brawl for strangers is a veteran's most biggest challenge.
The total cost to deport all of the people who entered the United States illegally adds up to being between 400-600 billion dollars (Swier). People do not get to choose where they are born or what they are born into, so despite coming into the States illegally, immigrants deserve a chance living in freely. Not everyone would be allowed to enter freely, there would be screening and other requirements involved in order to keep the country safe. Undocumented immigrants should have a pathway to citizenship being that it would help the economy, population, and create a more cultured country.
