The Vision Have you ever experienced losing your eyesight? In the two poems by Emily Dickinson, she relates her experience with fading eye vision. The two poems are called “We Grow Accustomed To The Dark” and “Before I got my Eye Put Out”. In both of her poems she explains two different viewpoints on sight.

In the first poem “We Grow Accustomed To The Dark” the poet is talking about depression and happiness. This shows depression to happiness by its saying when you have times of sadness you can overcome it and become happy. The poet is talking about depression to happiness in this lines “We uncertain step for newness of the night then fit our vision to the dark and meet the road erect”. Another quote from poem that supports my claim is “Either the darkness alters or something in the sight adjust myself to midnight and life steps almost straight”. This is saying once you stop being depression and live life to the fullest it’s easier to be happy person.

In “Before I got my Eye Put Out” the theme is just because you lose somethings doesn’t mean you forgot it. In “We Grow Accustomed To The Dark” the theme is depression to happiness. The differences in the poems can be seen in the tone of the speaker in the poems. In “Before I got my Eye Put Out” the tone of the speaker in the poem is very optimistic. This can be seen in these lines “The meadows mine the mountains mine all forests stintless stars as much of noon as I could take between my finite eyes”. However the tone of the speaker in the poem “We Grow Accustomed To The Dark” is sad and gloomy most of the poem. This can be seen in these lines “We uncertain step for newness of the night then fit our vision to the dark and meet the road
