Comparing and contrasting two greatly proliferated composers is always a difficult task, regardless of the fact that they were contemporaries. In this paper, I will be comparing Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven because of their interesting dynamic on an interpersonal level, as well as what can be gained by studying the differences between their music and trademarks. Also, because of the many aspects of Beethoven and Haydn’s lives that were occasionally manifested inside of their music. From their early lives, they showed stark contrasts. This was a logical progression for Beethoven, seeing as “[he] often gave expression to the belief that words were a less capable medium of proclamation for feelings than music” (Kerst 26). Whereas Haydn took part in the culmination/peak of the Classical style. When comparing, one of the biggest differences between Classical and Romantic styles was that the Classical style had a degree of universalism in form, meaning that composers knew what was expected of them, and the structure of their music and melody. The Romantic era focused more on the individual aspects of music, and its effect on you. On a musical level, Romantic music contained chromatic harmony, whilst Classical had diatonic harmony. This coupled with the fact that the Romantic era focused on more frivolous themes, the differences are relatively overt (with the classical style focusing on emotional restraint). Also, the fact that Haydn was bound to the Classical idea of form, resulted in much of his music lacking the innovation that Beethoven’s propounded. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven are very famous past composers that have created many pieces that have influenced not just people of their time, but people in modern times as well.
Vladek and Guido use their skills and intelligence to endure a genocide that killed over 6 million Jews and 11 million people in total. Although sadly Guido did not make it through the Holocaust, his wife Dora and Son Giosué survived, thanks to the help of Guido. Vladek survived by using his many talents in the prison camps whereas Guido survived by his cunning intelligence and positive attitude. In the Books Maus I and II by Art Spiegelman, the author uses his fathers story of survival to create a book that unleashes vivid imagery of Vladeks time in Auschwitz, in addition to how it has affected him since. In the movie Life Is Beautiful Directed by Roberto Benigni, Guido was an average Jewish man living in Italy. When his family got taken to a Natzi death camp he managed to keep his son Giosué hidden, while doing so he jeopardized his own life. Both of these works display two brave men withstanding the worst race extermination in history.
Some people think that if they could only change one aspect of their lives, it would be perfect. They do not realize that anything that is changed could come with unintended consequences. “The Monkey’s Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and “The Third Wish” by Joan Aiken both illustrate this theme. They demonstrate this by granting the main character three wishes, but with each wish that is granted, brings undesirable consequences. The main idea of this essay is to compare and contrast “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish.” Although the “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Third Wish” are both fantasies and have similar themes, they have different main characters, wishes, and resolutions.
Why do directors choose to stay faithful to or depart from a text when they are producing a film? Many directors choose to either alter or maintain literary elements such as characters, plot, and resolution from a text. The presence or lack of these specific features affects the audience. For instance, in the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, a classic short horror story written by W.W. Jacobs, and its accompanying film, the similarities and differences in the characters, plot, and resolution have an effect on the readers and viewers.
While some differences between Ventura College and the colleges that Andrew Hacker and Claudia Dreifus wrote about in their essay are evident, the similarities are salient. Ventura College meets the characteristics that Hacker and Dreifus described in their essay, Ventura College has a low tuition rates, small class sizes, and all students have access to counselors and instructors. The only difference between Ventura College and the colleges that Hacker and Dreifus talked about is funding. Ventura College doesn’t cost a lot of money to attend, but is experience it provides actually worth the price?
Classical music can be best summed by Mr. Dan Romano who said, “Music is the hardest kind of art. It doesn't hang up on a wall and wait to be stared at and enjoyed by passersby. It's communication. Its hours and hours being put into a work of art that may only last, in reality, for a few moments...but if done well and truly appreciated, it lasts in our hearts forever. That's art, speaking with your heart to the hearts of others.” Starting at a young age Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven have done just that with their musical compositions. Both musical composers changed the world of music and captivated the hearts of many. Their love of composing shared many similar traits, though their musical styles were much different.
It is clear that Beethoven’s stands as being significant in development of the string quartet to a massive extent in creativity and innovation. His early quartets show great influence of those from the Classical period and with his own, has influenced his contemporaries and later composers. The quartets published later in his life show even greater imagination and use of expression. It is also through similar uses of texture, harmony, rhythm and counterpoint that composers of the Romantic period and the 20th century wrote their own string quartets. Beethoven’s however prove a huge advancement in how string quartets are written and the intensity of emotions that they portray.

By analysing the last piano sonata of Haydn (Piano Sonata No. 62 in E-flat major (Hob. XVI:52)) and the first and last piano sonatas of Beethoven (Piano Sonata No. 1 in F minor Op. 2, No.1, Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor Op. 111), this essay will study the development of Beethoven’s composition style and how this conformed or didn’t conform to the Classical style. The concepts of pitch and expressive techniques will be focused on, with a broader breakdown on how these two concepts affect many of the other concepts of music. To make things simpler, this essay will analyse only the first movements of each of the sonatas mentioned.
They had a talent for creating amazing music. They were also a versatile composers, able to write in nearly every major genre. Their music was also meant to influence the next generations of music to come. Mozart’s music was meant to make you nice and comfortable. Beethoven’s was a bit more dark and moody.
Haydn was Beethoven's mentor and therefore , i believe Beethoven's music is more influenced by Haydn than Mozart. Haydn employed the use of sudden pauses and this is reflected in Beethoven's music as he made extensive use of unexpected fermatas (Example). Humor is arguably the most prominent feature of Haydn's music and again is mirrored in many of Beethoven's compositions. The plague known as the modern political news cycle has infected all realms of life, including (and certainly not limited to) Western Art Music. As world leaders gather at the G-20 summit, organized by its leader, Angela Merkel- who selected a performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony be added to the itinerary. The reason for this selection may be its interpretation as a piece of unity and hope, but one thing is certain, it highlights the contemporary ignorance of WAM.
Ludwig van Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn. Beethoven received his primary musical education under the guidance of his father, the chorister of court orchestra of the elector of Cologne in Bonn.
It seems he has brief moments of clarity and fits of anger, then lapse back to a quiet period of tranquility. It is as though he is listening to a voice calling and speaking to him and he wants to hear more. Taken over with a renewed vigor he pours out the notes before him, possessing the very thing he was afraid of, losing his hearing. With determination he fought to listen to the still small voice within that was leading him where he not only wanted but had to go.
