Welcome. We all here are new to Pierce College. For those of you who are not aware, this is a community college. Despite some beliefs on community college, we as the board of directors, expect the best to be brought out of the students at Pierce College. We bring this presentation to dispose of the traits and habits that cause someone to be considered as a poor student. These habits and traits include lack of organization, procrastination and bad influences. We attempt to explain this with process analysis. Process analysis allows us to give our presentation in an organized and methodical way. We expect you, recruits, to understand the high expectations we have on you as freshman.
A trait I have observed in students is their lack of organization. I assume, most Pierce College freshmen are coming from high school and are accustomed to the lenient styles of high school teach. You do not have much to worry about. College isn't different from high school. From here on out, you are allowed to slack. To start off, it is not necessary to acquire the proper materials. A proper material would be a folder in which all school related papers fit in a neatly and organized fashion. All papers can fit in your very own pocket. If you put your papers in a folder they will be neat. No professor hopes for a neat assignment. Professors crave imperfections. You many not under any circumstances hand in a paper that is perfect. Additionally, you should never bring the proper writing implements. If you do not have a pen or a pencil you can always borrow one from your buddy. While asking your buddy for a pencil you are missing the notes. Missing the notes is fine your instructor will probably repeat them. The only thing that happens when ...

... Wake up fools! I am kidding. If you agreed with any of the examples I gave, you are obviously ready to fail your college classes. Factors such as organization, procrastination, and influences affect a student enormously. Being organized is important in order to succeed. If all you are trying to do is relax your professors will not acknowledge any of your work. They will acknowledge you if you being acting irresponsible. An example of irresponsibility is not bringing your material. When they do notice you, they will see you as a poor student. Procrastination wears you down because you deprive yourself from sleep that you could never regain. Influences affect your thoughts by engaging you. If you are aware you are straying from your original goals, let go of the people who are taking you down. Do not be a poor student for it will affect you your entire life.

This statement is true because if these activities continue to impede the learning of a student then he or she will get stressed out, which could result in the student dropping all his or her college classes. If the student could just sit back and analyze the situation, life would be easier. For example, the student could reduce the number of classes he or she takes every semester. Reducing the amount of classes could result in more time spending with family rather than doing homework. When thinking of a person whose life is filled with frustrating duties and activities remember a nontraditional college students’ schedule of completing activities of school, working long hours, completing personal activities, and trying to spend free time with family and friends all in one day.
Anxiety. Regret. Frustration. Restlessly glancing at the clock, cringing every time I do. Staring at a blinking cursor, waiting for inspiration. Spending a restless night trying to squeeze out something to turn in the next day. This is a process known all too well by me, and most high schoolers in America, one known as: Procrastination. Procrastination is something easily avoided, and yet, seems to be one of the biggest causes for low grades in most students’ lives. It’s a tempting prospect, putting off your responsibilities to do something enjoyable, but it should be avoided at every possibility. Procrastination causes your grades to suffer, causes your mental health to suffer, and causes you to learn bad habits for the future.
In article, Are You Stuck with a "Next-Step Mentality?" Donehower says, "You may be reluctant to go outside your areas of strength for fear you 'll get a low grade,". "But if you think one grade in one class will ruin your chances of admission, you 're doing yourself a disservice. Colleges look at a number of factors in addition to grades. Students often perceive requirements of colleges as much more stringent and narrow than they really are." This text proves how people think the world will end if they fail or do not get good grades in a class. Donehower tells us about those students who are stuck in a class have a fear of getting a lower grade. Those students only think about negative things and they do not want to increase their abilities by doing such things. That is what Carroll argues that people do not want to change their thinking because they are afraid. There is another example by Donehower and he says, "I know of many people in their late 20s who are unhappy in their careers and who regret that they didn 't pursue a wider range of interests while in college." We can find those people who will never be happy in their life even if they have everything. They still have regret with themselves and are stuck with their mentality. Students entering college for the first time become concerned with their college life. The students are on their own once they enter college. There are no parents or guardians telling them when to do homework, when to go to bed, or how to eat healthy. These students are now responsible for how they are going to succeed in school and meet their own needs. From the beginning, these students wonder what their experience is going to be like and are they going to handle the demands of college?
If an individual is provided resources and surrounded by people who believe they are capable of goal achievement, said individual is more likely to experienced increases in determination and subsequent improvement in performance and well-being. For example, research has shown that students enrolled in positive learning environments where teachers incorporate strategies meant to meet students' motivational needs are more likely to become responsible learners who display a determination to succeed. In the essay "College Pressures" by William Zinsser, the pressures faced by college students at Yale are studied. The pressures include the need to develop time management and study skills appropriate for college work, the desire for good grades, the desire to meet parents' expectations, and the need to find employment in a competitive job market after
Throughout this course, I have faced many obstacles. One of the biggest struggles I faced was procrastination and being forgetful. I don’t feel that I am an awful writer; I feel that many of my low grade papers come from writing them the night before they were due. I’ve always had problems with writing papers last minute in high school. The difference between the two is that in high school if I didn’t have a paper in on time, I could turn it in late and still receive positive feedback and a pretty decent grade. In this course, it is a big deal to turn in something late. I feel that if I had used my time wisely and paced out the papers that I wrote, they would be better
William Zinsser’s essay “College Pressures” emphasizes the struggles students have in trying to conquer the college milestone in life. Zinsser believes that college has lost the authenticity of the overall goal of gaining knowledge for one’s own interest, rather than the overall need of going. He sympathizes with struggles college kids go through and hopes to provide insight on the overall situation. One of his major points are that succeeding the first time is not always the best way in learning, and that sometimes students need to fail in order to properly learn. The author mentions the “Four pressures, economic pressure, parental pressure, peer pressure, and self-induced pressure” and how there are “No villains; only victims” that fall
Studies have shown that many college students are not able to handle the stress while in school, which hinders the ability for the brain to act in a normal way (Shahrokh and Hales, 2003). If a person is unable to deal with the stress that one is being faced with, it will have negative consequences in terms of causing several psychological disorders (Canby et al., 2014). Entering post-secondary education is a completely new environment for students, as it can be tough for many to adjust to the new surroundings. There are many factors that cause stress when students enter college, as it can include having the ability to deal with lower marks (Struthers et al., 2000) and having to create a new social life. Once and if a social life is established, it can cause more stress among students because it can lead into peer pressure that results in risky behavior. In particular, peer pressure can cause alcoholism or drug abuse (Seiffge-Krenke, 1990) or it can also cause unprotected sex. Not only does stress revolve around peer-pressure, but it can also be caused by headaches and lack of energy. If a student is constantly staying up late to finish assignments or to study, it can cause headaches from the lack of sleep; thus causing stress. With all the given factors, it can be hard to overcome these external factors which can ultimately lead to stress among
School is a stressful, challenging, and a boring endeavor for many students. It poses many challenges throughout classes and create a struggle for some college students. Many students only have one goal in mind: passing. Students need to do well enough in a class to acquire a passing grade. However, some students will dig themselves into a hole by not completing work, failing tests, and not applying themselves.
College students have to balance work, family, and college activists and any delaying behavior from within can cause an unbalance. This behavior is called procrastinating and it can lead to problems in many areas of a student’s life. College students are the worst hit by this type of behavior because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. These activities can cause students to study when they have time which often is usually too short amount of time. There is a time and place to relax and enjoy life, but if students focus on playing around instead of getting their assignments done, college life will be stressful.
Students are encouraged at a young age by parents and educators to plan well in advance for college and pressured to do great on a daily basis in school. Some high school students do not put forth enough effort to plan for college until their senior year. Some high school seniors think by making great grades they do not have to worry about getting into college, while others plan and prep as if it is the only thing that is important...

For example; I failed a math final by a mere six points, but the rules dictate that a c minus is not passing. It was my responsibility to realize that I needed help with math before I took that final. I had to face the consequences and take the course again.

A student with a bad attitude or severe depression cannot learn well and perform well in class. Not being able to learn well will not bring an already low education level up.
What contributing factors affect student motivation towards success in college? Motivation is a force that helps people to achieve what they yearn to be, which helps people conquer obstacles to reach a goal. Students can be physically present in the classroom, but mentally absent. Many things can play a factor in student academic success from the quality of the professors’ lecture, to sufficient and modern facilities or the effective engagement between student and professors. In many researches including the books Lives on the Boundary by Mike Ross and Academically Adrift by Richard Arum and Josipa Roksa it demonstrates factors that students face in the achievement of academic success. Those factors that coincide on student academic success are motivation, life responsibilities, and preparation.
One of the most essential ingredients to an effective instructional environment is the initiative of the student. For the traditional undergraduate college student, this is one of the areas in which most problems exist [2]. The ‘traditional’ undergraduate college student should be construed as an average male and female between the ages of 18 and 22 who is at a transitional phase in life and learning to deal with independence.
