Hypothesis and Objectives
The main objective of this research project was to analyze the impact of the Be Active Eat Well (BAEW) intervention program on reducing unhealthy weight gain in children. The authors initially hypothesized that comprehensive community-wide interventions such as the BAEW program have the ability to reduce childhood obesity and promote health (Sanigorski, Bell, Kremer, Cuttler, & Swinburn, 2008).
Design
The general design of this study was quasi-experimental because the researchers introduced the BAEW program as a manipulation and comparison conditions between the intervention group and control group were present, but there was no randomization. A 16-question survey regarding overall health was administered to the children …show more content…

They stated that the study was approved by the Deakin University Human Research Ethics Committee, the Victorian Department of Education Employment, and Training and the Catholic Education Office while also assuring that they followed all applicable institutional and governmental regulations involving human volunteers (Sanigorski et al., 2008). However, while the study appears to be ethically appropriate, they did not specifically mention fulfilling any of the basic principles as outlined in the Belmont report. Protecting the autonomy of the volunteers was lacking because the authors stated the intervention was delivered to all children in the Colac community, yet only a subset consented to being involved (Sanigorski et al., 2008). The authors included facts concerning previous research that comprehensive community-wide interventions appear to be the safest and most effective option among obesity-prevention strategies, but this still does not touch upon beneficence because the children volunteers and their parents would most likely have some doubt that the benefits of the intervention would outweigh the risks.
