There can be many barriers that effect the law enforcement community into not being able to perform their duties. First, victims of certain crimes can be difficult to deal with when attempting to apprehend the suspect and bring that individual or persons to justice. When assisting the District Attorney’s office and arresting criminals, the victim may choose to not participate, which interrupts the process and hinders the prosecution of the criminal activity that occurred. For example, cases such as these can be seen with domestic violence cases, who do not want to cooperate with what their spouse, significant other, family, or other arrangement is being charged with. In addition, to failing to cooperate, the victim will also claim that the …show more content…
police and other assisting agencies are lying about the incident. Furthermore, another example of this can be see in the gang culture were the community will not speak with police to solve crimes or fear of retaliation from others. Also, citizen complaints and extreme policies from the upper ranking officials within the department may hinder police officers from performing their duties.
For instance, in todays society, almost everyone is offended over anything and typically hyper sensitive to the reality of the real world. Therefore, even if a police officer is conducting their job at an appropriate and satisfactory level, a person will somehow find a way to complain. Having such an incident take place can weigh heavily on an officer attempting to do his or her job. Complaints such as these can bring unwanted stress to the job and may even change the perspective of how someone may or may not be helped later with the same issue. For example, several local agencies that I am aware of use to assist citizens by unlocking cars or helping others with a ride if they were stranded or had to walk. However, due to complaints when helping the citizens, the agencies chose to create a policy forbidding such activity in the future. In addition, is the complaints that are regarding how police conduct their job is troublesome. In the community today, many people contact police over every matter even if it is no a criminal matter. This becomes a burden because the police are forced to be a therapist, doctor, a parent, or deal with the mentally handicapped when certain facilities should be handling these matters. Moreover, the complaints multiply when attempt to remedy the situation, but are also criticized by how they handled
it. Likewise, in regarding these complaints, upper ranking officials, council members, and the like attempt to satisfy the masses by integrating new policies and reforming the department to deal with the issue. However, some of the new implemented policies bring on new challenges and hinder police activity. For example, Chicago is seeing such chaos due to many large public complaints, they attempted to reform the department by adding more red tape on how an officer should conduct their job. Therefore, this became a burden and many officer’s simple do the bare minimum to reduce the risk of being punished for performing their duty and brings bad morale. Another barrier that can be an issue is dealing with the criminal justice system itself. The criminal justice system can be long drawn out process that can be burdensome for those involved. Offenders that are repeatedly arrested and released only to be rearrested again later can bring work related stress. This can be an attributing factor for the large amount of time that had been placed on gathering evidence and making the case. However, it can become an issue when constant court dates are reset, witnesses fail to show, victims not cooperating, or offenders receiving lesser sentences. Although these are only a few instances that can become or are a barrier, I believe that many other obstacles can become a barrier for any police department on any situation they may encounter. In addition, not only do these obstacles are difficult to navigate through, many departments are poorly funded and lacking in required equipment.
The relationship between law enforcement and prosecutors, which goes hand-in-hand, can’t be overlooked. Evidence of a crime that detectives and law enforcement discover is as equally important as a good trial on part of the prosecution. If detectives aren’t able to find good solid evidence – that case usually isn’t bothered in being pursued. Several years ago, in the late 80’s, there was a murder case in Southeastern Oklahoma which now serves as a tragic example to the need for honest, constitutional work in the criminal justice system. Disreputable investigative procedures, fraudulent sources, and bad evidence were the foundation of this case that shattered innocent lives.
As a law enforcement officer, it is up to them to change the way that the general public looks at them.
The criminal justice field is made up of many facets. The court system includes many professions which include lawyers, judges, police officers and polygraph examiners. The federal justice system has numerous professions as well. Two highly recognizable organizations in the government criminal justice system are the CIA and the FBI. Two careers of interest worth future investigation are a polygraph examiner and a special agent in the FBI.
While on the job, police must put all their personal opinions aside. They must provide everyone with an equal and fair chance. It is important in a democratic society for police to not know too much about the community they are policing. It allows them to ...
The career of a correctional officer has always captivated me in a way that is difficult to explain. Even as a child, I recall tuning into shows such as Lockup and Lockdown. In fact, my earliest, most vivid memories consist of me sitting in front of a TV screen with my eyes mesmerized by the hardened criminals visioned on the screen before me. It may seem peculiar, but I’ve always pictured myself inside the prison walls. What’s even more peculiar is that I’ve seldom visioned myself as a correctional officer; in fact, I’ve almost always visioned myself as a prisoner. Given what’s been said, one may ask me why it is that I aspire to be a correctional officer. And the answer to that question is rather simple. I want to be a correctional officer because I thrive for a rush of euphoria to course through my veins. And being a correctional officer will allow an endless supply of euphoria to course through my veins. And with that said, I don’t need to further explain why such a career is what I long for.
These changes have manifested both positive and negative reverberations in the way we perform our job. Police officials have contemplated for years over the key to maintaining a positive image for their organization. Unfortunately, several incidents in the past years have altered society's perception of police in some communities. Police in America are no longer strangers to innovation born of scandal.
A police officer is a law enforcement official whose job is to protect and serve all people, not to ignore racial equality. Because the U.S consists of many different races and ethnic groups, the ongoing conflict between police officers and citizens of color is constantly rising. Although police officers today are no longer allowed to have racial bias, which can be described as, attitudes or stereotype used against individuals of color to define their actions and decisions, officers sometimes abuse their authority going around racial impact tools and policies. This results in citizens viewing it as discrimination and mass criminalization. By changing the way laws and regulations unfairly impact Black and Brown communities can improve the justice
Traditionally police departments in the United States and throughout the rest of the world have reacted to crime rather than using proactive practices to reduce crime. However, a new era of policing is beginning to dawn, the era of problem-oriented policing. According to Professor Herman Goldstein, problem-oriented policing is a policing strategy that involves the identification and analysis of specific crime and disorder problems in order to develop effective response strategies in conjunction with ongoing assessment. Police agencies throughout the world are beginning to focus on the underlying problems that cause criminal activity rather than just pursuing criminals who have already acted illegally. With that being said, there have been many challenges which have stalled the progress and implementation of problem-oriented policing. Some of these challenges include the lack of understanding of the problem-oriented policing method, lack of officer participation, lack of community involvement, time management problems, and the lack of interagency cooperation.
Local police and federal agents need to use ethical decision making skills when evaluating whether or not to pursue a case, or in what way to pursue it. They might take into consideration, for example, whether a suspect has a family and what his incarceration would do to the family; the suspect's economic situation, as it might affect his family; and the suspect's prior criminal history. Once the law enforcement official has evaluated all aspects of the case, he will determine whether or not to make an arrest, and if so then as to what is the arrest for. When the law enforcement agent has completed his investigation and made an arrest, the case is given to a prosecuting attorney.
In recent years the role of victims in the criminal justice system has risen into prominence, inspiring much research into victim experience and possible reform. There are a multitude of factors that influence policy makers in relation to reforming the criminal justice system, one of which is victims. However, victims while they can be catalysts for reforms such as the case of James Ramage among others, they still play a relatively minor role in influencing policy change.
Technology has been becoming bigger and bigger into the field of Criminal Justice. It is almost essential for every part of the field to use technology now. The use of cars, internet, weapons, alternative methods and a lot more have made this field way more effective. Without technology this field would be nothing now a days. It has influenced the whole entire field and is going to continue to change forever.
For decades, Law Enforcement agencies has relied on the many creations, and implementations of new technology to assist in producing effectiveness. The 1900’s was a time that intensified the capability of solving crime. But as technology continues to evolve, so will the possibility of deterring crime, and successfully apprehending suspects nationwide.
The basis of successful prosecutions comes from cooperation of the witnesses and victims. Victims of crime play an important role with making the justice system work. Without cooperation or participation, an adequate outlook on the case would be impossible. There are constitutional safeguards provided by the government. Any accused person is allowed legal representation, confront accuser, and have guilt or innocence proved. The Victims’ Rights Amendment of the Florida Constitution also gives rights to a victim. The Florida police department ensures victims’ rights are kept and assists in meeting obligations in the process (University of Florida Police Department, 2014).
Police in a community perform a large scope of public services. Depending on how one perceives the police and the reason why they are interacting with the officers usually decides if one’s experience is either a negative or positive one. For instance, if someone is pulled over for drinking while driving they may not consider their interaction with an officer a positive one. If someone locks their keys in the car and an officer comes to their rescue, then they may view their interaction with the officer as positive. However, no matter which experience someone has with the police, the officers greatest service to their community and to other officers is to have and maintain their integrity, honesty, values, standards, courage, civility, as well as their ethics in the field.
This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
