The only way to truly describe a person is all the experiences they have had from childhood to the present. Humans are complex and ever changing, and as the last century has exploded with new ideas and beliefs it is more present than ever. The three authors from the passages we have read while disagreeing on the how, they all advocate that humans are the sum of our connections regardless of who or what. Barbra Fredrickson in Love 2.0 shows us how love and positivity resonance lead to a healthier life let us connect. While Sherry Turkle from Alone Together contradicts Fredrickson with her belief that connections with things and technology in our new age has redefined people. A person is defined by their interactions and connections with the world around them. The self can only be summed up with all the relations and connections with people, things, and religion because without them humans are nothing.
The connections that a person makes define themselves as humans, and for the longest time people have craved a deeper connection between each other and religion as they often bring purpose to someone’s life. The self that is talked about by Armstrong can be related to the “shared emotions, brain synchrony, and mutual understanding emerge together” (Fredrickson 113) that Fredrickson believes in. The significance of this is showing how when you connect with others it is not just about you but the person you are synching with. For some practicing of religion is a daily, weekly, or just a holiday activity, but for most “religion was a matter of doing rather than thinking” (Armstrong 17). There are many ways that people practice religion nowadays but when we look back to Armstrong and her recounting the earliest forms of religion it was a way of life and practical living. While many of these old practices and way of religion are not practical anymore you still have to think about how religion was originally not meant to just be a belief but a lifestyle. A way this has transformed and a way religion has a spot in our current technological age is how it has also grown and the means of practice. With technology we can access more information for religious reasons and books like the Bible and the Tora are such widespread now. Technology let people both connect and disconnect with religion in many ways. For in our busy and stressful lives it can be a way for people to escape and go to gather themselves. Religion for many, or maybe that one day a week is often a time of peace and a chance to reflect while trying to better yourself. While technology might be what is supposed to improve our lives and ease of our jobs it also adds more levels of complexity that many still like
