Barbara Tuchman 1912-1989
On a cold winter morning on January 30th in 1912 a baby girl was born to the proud parents of Maurice and Alma Wertheim. Her name was Barbara. She would someday come to be known as Barbara Tuchman, narrative historian and writer.
Barbara was born into a comfortable home in New York, New York. She had a middle class up bringing and both her mother and father came from distinguished families. They also were probably well off because of her fathers great success in business. Barbara's father Maurice was at some point President of the American Jewish Committee as well as a Philanthropist, a baker and a publisher. He published many magazines one of which was The Nation. Which he purchased as it was going bankrupt in 1935. Barbara's grandfather Henry Morgenthau Sr., Maurice's father, worked and served as an ambassador to Turkey, and her uncle Henry Morgenthau Jr., Maurice's brother, was Secretary of the Treasury for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Barbara had two sister's Josephine and Anne, and their family had seven servants.
Barbara first experienced World War I when she was only two years old, she was of course too young to remember. While journeying with her parents on a ship to Constantinople to visit her grandfather, two German water vessels and a British warship exchanged shots. Barbara had a good upbringing. All through out her childhood she loved reading and did a lot of it. She could spend hours on end reading her favorite books over and over again. This love for reading started a spark in her heart that would one day lead to her love for not only writing history but for history itself.
She attended The Walden School, which was established in 1914 and is still today a functioning school. In fact a well known celebrity Matthew Broderick also attended and graduated from there. Barbara graduated in 1930 when she was 18. She then went on to attend college at and received her BA at Radcliffe College. She didn't actually receive any academic education as a historian but had always been interested in history. The honor thesis that she wrote at Radcliffe was actually titled "The Moral Justification for the British Empire"
The same year Barbara graduated from Radcliffe she had the opportunity to travel with her grandfather to the World Economic Conference in London in 1933, soon after she started working as a research assistant at the Institute of Pacific Relations in New York and Tokyo.

In An American Soldier in World War I, David Snead examines account of George Browne, a civil engineer who fought as part of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I. Snead shares Browne’s account of the war through the letters he wrote to his fiancé Martha Ingersoll Johnson. Through Browne’s letters and research conducted of the AEF, Snead gives a concise, informative, and harrowing narrative of life as a soldier serving in the camps and front lines of the Great War. Snead attempts to give the reader an understanding of Browne’s service by focusing on his division, the 42nd Division, their training and preparation, combat on the front lines, and the effects of war on George and Martha’s relationship. As Snead describes, “Brownie’s letters offer a view of the experiences of an American soldier. Many war stories today have happy, romantic, and cliche ending; many authors skip the sad, groosom, and realistic part of the story. W. D. Howell’s story, Editha and Ambrose Bierce’s story, An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge both undercut the romantic plots and unrealistic conclusions brought on by many stories today. Both stories start out leading the reader to believe it is just another tpyical love-war senario, but what makes them different is the one-hundred and eighty degrees plot twist at the end of each story. In the typical love-war story the soldier would go off to war, fighting for his country, to later return safely to his family typically unscaved.
World War One or “The War To End All Wars” was one of the most devastating events in the history of humankind. When looking back at such a gruesome war it is understandable that we might dwell on the key battles and tactics, which are often summarized by statistics on death tolls. However, we often forget that statistics create an illusion that warps our perception of death. As Stalin put it “One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is just a statistic”. In the novel “The Wars” by Timothy Findley, the author draws away from traditional war stories by showing a true appreciation for life that truly touches the reader on a human and emotional level. Timothy Findley narrows in something anyone can relate to: a loving mother worried about her son risking his life in a war. This mother in the “The Wars” is Mrs. Ross, who represents the home front while her son, Robert Ross, fights for the British in World War One. As the book progresses and Robert gets further into the death trap known as the “Great War”, Mrs. Ross becomes increasingly obsessive and connected to her son as his fate becomes more clear.
Annemarie is a normal young girl, ten years old, she has normal difficulties and duties like any other girl. but these difficulties aren’t normal ones, she’s faced with the difficulties of war. this war has made Annemarie into a very smart girl, she spends most of her time thinking about how to be safe at all times “Annemarie admitted to herself,snuggling there in the quiet dark, that she was glad to be an ordinary person who would never be called upon for courage.
World War I had a great effect on the lives of Paul Baumer and the young men of his generation. These boys’ lives were dramatically changed by the war, and “even though they may have escaped its shells, [they] were destroyed by the war” (preface). In Erich Maria Remarque’s novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul Baumer and the rest of his generation feel separated from the other men, lose their innocence, and experience comradeship as a result of the war.
Testament of Youth by Vera Brittain is her own story that she wrote about during the Great War otherwise known as World War One. The main theme of her story is the struggles that she had to face, whether it dealt with her family, or her personal goals such as attending college or the world that she was surrounded by. On page 17 Brittain stated that "When the Great War broke out, it came to me not as a superlative tragedy, but as an interruption of the most exasperating kind to my personal plans." Another important aspect of Vera's goals was the aspiration and ambition that she had, that aspiration allowed her to move forward in her life.
